If your internet connection drops, your encoder may keep running locally, but it cannot send new video to the streaming platform. Viewers may see buffering, a frozen picture, an offline message, or a platform-specific disconnect screen. Whether the stream reconnects—and what happens to its recording—depends on the platform and encoder; there is no universal recovery window.
What happens when the connection fails
- The connection degrades. If the route from your computer to the platform’s ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain your chosen bitrate, OBS may report rising dropped frames. OBS says it discards frames to avoid buffering where possible; losing too many can disconnect you from the server. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (2024-09-30) and OBS connection guidance.
- The platform receives impaired or no new video. A brief disruption may appear as stuttering or buffering. During a complete interruption, newly captured frames cannot reach the platform; the player’s exact response varies.
- The encoder may disconnect. The computer can still be encoding, but without a working path to the ingest server it cannot deliver the feed. OBS does not provide an intermediary streaming server between the creator and the platform. OBS streaming connection guidance.
- Recovery is platform-specific. Some services provide a temporary reconnect state; others may end the broadcast. A reconnect may restore delivery, but it is not guaranteed across platforms and encoders.
A broadcaster-side outage is different from one viewer’s buffering. A viewer’s own network, device, or location can cause playback problems even when the broadcaster’s connection to the platform is healthy. OBS buffering guidance.
What viewers see—and what happens to the recording
Twitch
Twitch’s official support text says Disconnect Protection can keep a message on screen for up to 90 seconds while the streamer reconnects. If the streamer does not reconnect within that period, Twitch says the stream ends normally; it also says the VOD will be continuous. The help text names OBS Studio, Streamlabs OBS, XSplit, Twitch Studio, and Twitch broadcasts on iOS and Android. Feature availability and settings can change, so check Twitch Stream Settings for the current behavior. Twitch: How to Use Disconnect Protection.
YouTube Live
YouTube recommends choosing a quality that is reliable for your connection, testing upload speed and the stream before going live, and watching stream-health messages during the broadcast. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not replace the broadcaster’s need to deliver a feed to YouTube. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a universal outage-recovery time or recording outcome. YouTube: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

How to diagnose a dropped stream
- Check OBS Statistics and its connection indicator. Look at the dropped-frames count. A rise points to a network-to-ingest problem; it is different from encoding lag or a viewer-only playback issue. OBS connection troubleshooting.
- Reduce bitrate if upload capacity is tight. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee that a variable route will work or a universal platform limit. Lower bitrate can stabilize delivery at the cost of picture quality. OBS notes that dynamic bitrate can lower quality but does not fix the underlying connection. Check the platform’s own limits as well. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Test another ingest server or service. This can help identify whether the problem is route-, server-, or service-specific; it is diagnostic, not a repair for a particular service outage. OBS connection troubleshooting.
- Check the local network. If Wi-Fi is unstable, test with Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming because Wi-Fi may be unreliable. An Ethernet cable can address the wireless leg, but not a modem failure, ISP outage, or upstream routing interruption. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
- Look for software or driver interference. If the problem persists, check VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, and network drivers; OBS identifies these as possible sources of instability.
- Restart local equipment, then contact your ISP if needed. Restart the modem and router if they appear to have connectivity problems. If that does not resolve the issue, congestion or a routing change outside your home may require help from your internet provider. OBS connection troubleshooting.
- For YouTube, test a representative stream. Include typical audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages while live. YouTube encoder guidance.
How to reduce the chance of an interruption
- Choose a bitrate your stable upload capacity can sustain, rather than setting it based only on a peak speed test. OBS’s 75% starting point is guidance, not a promise.
- Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi is the weak link. It cannot protect against failure beyond your local network.
- Test the full broadcast setup before an important event and watch the platform’s stream-health indicators.
- Consider a second internet path only after checking whether the encoder and platform can resume the existing broadcast, whether failover changes your public IP or ingest route, and whether the backup has enough stable upload capacity, acceptable latency, and a suitable data allowance. The reviewed guidance does not validate seamless switching between connections.
