The first shift is measured in global industry revenue; the second offers new formats and opportunities, but the available evidence does not show that livestreams reliably replace concerts or increase artists’ income.
Two kinds of music streaming—and two different effects
On-demand music streaming lets listeners choose recorded tracks from a catalogue, usually through a subscription or an ad-supported service. A livestream performance is a time-bound video event: an artist performs for an audience watching online, and the event may be free, sponsored or ticketed.
The distinction matters. Figures about recorded-music streaming revenue do not measure livestream concert revenue, ticket sales or an individual artist’s total income. They describe related changes in music distribution, not one combined market.
On-demand streaming now dominates recorded-music revenue
IFPI’s Global Music Report 2025 says global recorded-music trade revenue reached US$29.6 billion in 2024, up 4.8% from 2023. Streaming brought in US$20.4 billion—69.0% of recorded-music revenue that year. Within streaming, paid subscription revenue grew 9.5% in 2024, while ad-supported streaming formats grew 1.2%. These are worldwide recorded-music figures, not measures of concert or livestream earnings.
IFPI’s industry-data page reports 752 million users of paid subscription accounts globally at the end of 2024. That scale helps explain why streaming has become central to how recorded music reaches listeners. It does not mean that artists receive equal shares of the revenue or that the overall market’s growth translates into comparable income for every performer.

More access changes how listeners find and hear music
Large catalogues make more music available on demand
Streaming services give listeners access to broad catalogues without having to buy each recording separately. The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), in its 2022 market-study executive summary, described the effect this way: “Streaming has changed not only how we listen to music but what we listen to because for the first time all music, both old and new, is readily available in one place at no additional cost.” That is the regulator’s assessment of the change, not a claim that every listener behaves the same way.
The CMA also pointed to features such as higher-quality audio, video and synced lyrics. Its UK revenue comparison offers historical context, not a global trend: inflation-adjusted UK recorded-music revenue rose from £0.8 billion in 2015 to £1.1 billion in 2021, still below the £1.9 billion peak recorded in 2001.

Social video has become part of music discovery
Music discovery now takes place across more than dedicated audio services. TikTok’s 2025 announcement of a Music Impact Report, commissioned with Luminate and analysing 2024 activity, reported that artists whose TikTok engagement was more correlated with streaming volumes experienced higher on-demand streaming growth over the year. This is an association reported in a platform-commissioned study; it does not establish that TikTok activity alone caused the growth.

The broader change is that short-form social video can put songs, artists and performance clips in front of people who may then seek out recordings elsewhere. But discovery, listening and lasting fandom are different outcomes, and a platform’s reported relationship between them should not be treated as proof of a guaranteed path from exposure to success.

Livestream concerts add a performance and fan-contact format
Livestreamed performances became especially important during the pandemic, when venues were shut and audiences could not gather. TIME’s 2021 reporting described ticketed events, sponsored shows and artists using online platforms and production tools to perform. Some artists in that account also discussed retaining online communities as in-person shows returned.
Those examples show how artists can present a performance to viewers who are not in the same venue, and how online contact can continue between or beyond physical shows. They are historical examples, not current market-size or earnings evidence. The cited account does not quantify how much livestreams added to artists’ incomes, how many people they reached in total, or whether they increased later concert attendance.
Recorded-music streaming and livestream concerts are not interchangeable
| Question | On-demand recorded-music streaming | Livestream performance |
|---|---|---|
| What the audience receives | Access to recorded tracks selected from a catalogue. | A time-bound video performance watched as it happens. |
| How it may be paid for | Subscription and ad-supported formats. IFPI reported US$20.4 billion in global streaming revenue in 2024. | Events may be free, sponsored or ticketed; the cited sources do not establish a comparable global revenue total. |
| What the cited evidence measures | Recorded-music trade revenue, including streaming’s share of that revenue, as reported by IFPI. | Historical examples of event formats and audience practices in TIME’s 2021 reporting; no like-for-like global measure is stated. |
| Can it replace or drive an in-person concert? | Spotify’s service can also help listeners discover concerts, but that is a separate outcome from recorded-music revenue. | The cited sources do not establish that livestreams replace in-person shows or reliably increase ticket sales. |
Recorded-music streaming can connect with live-event discovery without being the same thing as a livestream concert. Spotify’s 2026 Loud & Clear article says the company had driven $1 billion in gross concert ticket sales for artists by the first half of 2025. That is Spotify’s own reported attribution for ticket sales across its service. It is neither a measure of livestream concert revenue nor evidence that livestreaming caused those sales.

What the changes mean for artists—and what remains uncertain
For recorded music, the shift is clear: streaming is the largest revenue format in the global recorded-music market, and access to large catalogues has changed how listeners can find and play music. For live performance, online video has added another way to stage an event and maintain contact with fans, particularly when a physical gathering is unavailable or an artist wants an online audience as well.
Those industry-wide changes do not settle the practical question for any one performer: whether a particular livestream will earn money, attract a new audience, support a community or sell more in-person tickets. The sources cited here do not provide recent independent evidence isolating those effects. Artists should therefore distinguish the reach or engagement a platform reports from income they actually receive, and treat a livestream as one possible format rather than a proven substitute for touring.

A separate option for keeping recorded video live on YouTube
For creators who want an uploaded recording or playlist to run continuously as a YouTube livestream, rather than perform live from a camera, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops the uploaded video after the creator adds a YouTube stream key. The stream can keep running with the creator’s computer off. It supports YouTube only; it is a tool for uploaded videos, not a way to broadcast a live camera performance.
To try it, start a StreamNeo account. The first day is free with no card required.
