The practical sequence is to match your build to the target Engine and Java versions, implement and package the extension using a supported development workflow, make it available to Engine, register its fully qualified class name on the intended application, configure any properties, and test before production deployment or an Engine upgrade.
What a Wowza custom plugin is
WSE is a Java-based media server with a Java API for extensions. A custom module is associated with an application through that application’s configuration; it is not a server-wide switch that should be enabled without regard to application and virtual-host scope. Wowza describes the application configuration and Java API in its Engine overview.
The workflow below explains how to build and register a module without assuming a particular callback implementation or JAR destination. Those details depend on the current build instructions and target Engine version; use Wowza’s version-matched materials rather than copying an unverified class template.
1. Record the Engine and Java versions first
Before creating a project, identify the exact WSE release, operating system, Java runtime used by that installation, and any third-party Java dependencies. Java compatibility varies by Engine release. Wowza’s Java support guidance is dated October 2, 2024 and describes version-specific support rather than one timeless Java requirement.

For example, Wowza’s 4.9.0 release notice says that release was compiled using Java 17, new installations included a Java 21 JRE, and supported Java versions for 4.9.0 were 17 or 21. It also cautions that a module using Java 21 features may not work merely because Engine runs on a Java 21 JRE: Engine had been tested on that JRE but not recompiled with JDK 21. Read the 4.9.0 release notice and current support guidance for the exact release you will run.
Choose a compiler/toolchain and language features compatible with the runtime and Engine release that will execute the module. Do not infer support for newer Java features from the fact that a newer JRE can start the server.
2. Choose a development and build route
Gradle with Docker Compose
Wowza’s Gradle and Docker Compose extension guide describes a project workflow for building, packaging, and deploying WSE extensions, with WSE running locally in a container. The associated wse-plugin-builder README is the place to confirm current project layout, commands, Engine image/version, and runtime dependency handling. Match those instructions to the Engine release you recorded; repository details can change.

Wowza IDE
Wowza’s developer portal also indexes an IDE-based route alongside its Java modules material. The available documentation does not establish that the IDE is required or preferable to the Gradle/Docker Compose workflow. Before choosing it, confirm that its instructions and tooling still support your target Engine and Java versions.
When comparing the routes, weigh whether they pin the Engine version, make local integration testing repeatable, automate dependency/build steps, and clearly document how the resulting artifact is made available to the server. Do not assume either route’s packaging behavior without checking its current instructions.
3. Implement the Java module
Wowza application configuration identifies a module by its fully qualified Java class name. The Developer Portal indexes a dedicated “Use Java modules” guide and Java API reference; consult the material corresponding to your target release for class inheritance, lifecycle callbacks, and method signatures. These details are not safe to guess from the word “plugin,” and this article does not supply an unverified Java class scaffold.

Keep the module’s responsibilities and configuration requirements explicit. If it relies on third-party libraries, verify from the selected build workflow how those dependencies are packaged or otherwise made visible to the Engine process. The official extension overview supports a build-and-package workflow, but does not establish one universal dependency-bundling rule or JAR destination.
4. Build, make the artifact available, and register it
- Build and package: Follow the current Gradle/Docker Compose guide and matching repository README, or the version-appropriate IDE instructions. Confirm the build completed and identify the artifact and dependencies using that workflow’s documentation.
- Deploy according to the chosen workflow: Make the built extension available to the Engine process as its instructions specify. Do not treat an older community post’s JAR-in-installation-
lib-directory advice as a universal current procedure; the historical community discussion is not a substitute for release-matched deployment documentation. - Choose the exact application: Confirm the server, virtual host, and application that should load the module. WSE stores application configuration in XML, and each virtual host has its own application configuration context, as described in the Engine overview.
- Register the module: Add its fully qualified class name to that application’s module configuration, along with the name, description, and order appropriate to the application. Wowza’s REST example uses
PUT /v2/servers/{serverName}/vhosts/{vhostName}/applications/{appName}/advand amodulesarray. The sample classcom.my.custom.path.MyCustomModuleis illustrative, not a built-in module. - Verify the saved configuration: Wowza says a successful advanced-configuration update writes a
<Module>entry to the application’sApplication.xml. Review the result in the intended application before testing. See Create a live app for the REST example and payload structure.
You can manage application settings through WSE Manager or XML as well as through REST operations. Manager/XML are convenient for an administrator working on one application; REST is useful for repeatable or automated updates. In all cases, verify the server, virtual host, and application scope before saving, since a correct module entry in the wrong application will not configure the intended stream.

The live-app REST example updates advancedSettings as well as the module list. Wowza’s overview also describes adding properties through Manager by specifying a path, name, type, and value, or adding a <Property> element under the appropriate XML <Properties> element. The documented example types include Boolean, Integer, and String.

A property only has an effect if the module reads it and the property is set in the configuration scope the module expects. Use the module’s implementation and the target-version API reference to establish the property name, type, default behavior, and scope; a property name entered in Manager is not automatically interpreted by arbitrary module code.

After deployment and registration, use the application lifecycle action appropriate to the change and the selected deployment workflow. Wowza’s REST guide documents application restart actions, but that does not establish that every module change universally requires a full server restart. Follow the instructions for the workflow and release you are using.
Validate in a non-production environment before exposing the module to viewers or upgrading Engine. Wowza explicitly advises non-production testing of custom modules before an Engine upgrade. A practical check sequence is:

- Confirm that the intended application configuration contains the correct module class and ordering.
- Confirm that the Engine can load the class and that the required dependencies are available.
- Inspect Engine logs for class-loading, configuration, or initialization errors.
- Exercise the feature and callbacks relevant to the module’s purpose, then test the actual streaming workflow it affects.
- Repeat the checks against the exact Engine and Java versions planned for production, especially after an upgrade.
