No. In 2025, 720p remained an officially supported HD option on the services checked, and it could still be a sensible choice for smaller screens, unstable connections or limited mobile data. It provides less detail than 1080p or 4K, but whether you can watch a particular title at a higher resolution depends on more than your screen: your service plan, the title, device, app or browser, and connection all matter.
Is 720p still HD?
Yes. Netflix says its HD label can mean either 720p or 1080p. YouTube defines HD as video with 720 to 1080 vertical lines. So 720p is not obsolete simply because 1080p and 4K are available.
That label does not guarantee that every title, plan or device offers 720p—or any particular quality tier. YouTube says playback availability can depend on licensing agreements and device support. Netflix likewise notes that title availability, plan, device capability, network conditions and data settings affect playback quality.

720p, 1080p and 4K compared
Resolution is only one part of perceived quality. Screen size, viewing distance, source quality and compression matter too. A larger television viewed from nearby can make the additional detail in 1080p or 4K easier to notice than a phone held at arm’s length. The available evidence does not establish a universal screen size or distance at which the difference becomes visible.

These are the services’ recommended connection speeds, not guaranteed playback bitrates or promises of a particular delivered resolution. Netflix says higher-quality video uses more data and may use more energy. YouTube’s figures are approximate sustained-speed recommendations.

When 720p is a reasonable choice
- You watch mostly on a phone or small tablet. The difference from 1080p may be less apparent on a smaller display, though it depends on viewing conditions and the video.
- Your connection is limited or fluctuates. The lower recommended speeds for 720p give it a practical advantage when higher resolutions buffer or drop in quality.
- You are conserving mobile data. Lower resolution generally means less data than higher-quality playback, although actual use varies by service and stream.
- The source itself is 720p or heavily compressed. Choosing 4K cannot restore detail that is not present in the source.
A 2024 study by Mateo Cámara, CĂ©sar DĂaz, Juan Casal, Jorge Ruano and Narciso GarcĂa reported no statistically significant perceived difference between 720p and 1080p in its test conditions. The subjective assessment involved 50 participants, four handheld devices and the tested sequences. It is not evidence that everyone will see no difference, or that the result applies to televisions, all content or heavily compressed video. Read the study abstract.

When to prefer 1080p or 4K
Try a higher resolution if you watch on a compatible larger screen, sit relatively close, and have a stable connection with enough capacity. The source must also be available in that resolution, and your subscription, device, app or browser must support it. A 4K-capable television or streaming device cannot turn a 720p source into native 4K.
Compatibility can be specific to a service feature. For example, YouTube lists Fire TV Stick 4K among devices supported for Primetime Channels; that listing does not establish support for every YouTube feature, title or other streaming service.

Why is my stream only 720p?
Before replacing a device or paying for a faster plan, check the factors that can restrict resolution:
- Check the title and service. Confirm that the specific video is available in the higher resolution. A service’s HD label may include 720p, and not all titles are available in HD or 4K.
- Check your subscription and account settings. Confirm that your plan includes the quality you want and that any data-saving or playback-quality setting is not limiting it.
- Check the full device chain. Verify support in the TV or display, streaming device, app or browser, and any connected equipment. A browser may not offer HD playback in some cases.
- Check the connection under real viewing conditions. A speed result taken at another time or near the router may not reflect the connection at the screen. Congestion or instability can cause a service to lower quality.
- Allow for adaptive playback. Netflix says playback can begin at a lower resolution and step up, and that it adapts to connection speed to help you keep watching. A stream starting at 720p does not by itself prove that your device is incapable of higher quality.

What to do when higher quality buffers or never appears
- It buffers at 1080p or 4K: select 720p and see whether playback becomes stable. The services’ recommendations indicate that higher resolutions need more connection capacity, but they do not guarantee a result on every network.
- The quality menu stops at 720p: check the title, plan, app or browser, and device support before assuming the connection is the cause. YouTube notes that licensing and device compatibility affect HD or UHD availability.
- It starts at 720p and later improves: give adaptive playback time to respond to the connection, provided the title and device support a higher tier.
- A 4K display still looks soft: check the source resolution and compression. A capable display cannot add genuine detail to a 720p source.
For documentary creators: the stream resolution is a separate question
