What Is RTSP? A Guide to the Real-Time Streaming Protocol

RTSP controls a media session while a negotiated transport carries the video. Learn its methods, default ports, camera URL caveats, and security basics.

RTSP—the Real-Time Streaming Protocol—is used to set up and control delivery of live or recorded audio and video. Think of it as a network remote control for a media server: RTSP manages the session, while the media itself travels using a transport selected for that session. That distinction matters when you connect an IP camera to viewing or recording software.

What RTSP does—and what it does not do

The IETF describes RTSP as a “network remote control” for multimedia servers. A client uses RTSP requests to establish and control a session with a server, such as a camera. The session’s description identifies media streams and delivery details; setup negotiates transport parameters.

RTSP is not a video codec, and it does not mean the video is carried inside RTSP control messages. The protocol coordinates delivery; the negotiated media transport carries the audio or video. So seeing an RTSP address tells you how a client may control a stream, not by itself which codec it uses or whether a particular player can decode it.

RTSP 1.0 and RTSP 2.0 are not fully interchangeable

RTSP 2.0 is defined by IETF RFC 7826, published in December 2016. It obsoletes RFC 2326, the RTSP 1.0 specification from 1998. RFC 7826 says RTSP 2.0 is based on RTSP 1.0 but is not backward compatible except for basic version negotiation. A device or client supporting one version should not be assumed to work with the other.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How an RTSP session typically works

The sequence below is a useful model, not a guarantee that every camera implements every method or uses the same setup flow. The methods are part of RTSP 2.0’s registered set.

  1. Get a presentation description. A client can send DESCRIBE to request information about the presentation. The description can identify streams, resource identifiers, delivery protocol, transport parameters, and encoding information.
  2. Set up delivery. The client sends SETUP with acceptable transport parameters. The server selects supported parameters and establishes session state.
  3. Start or pause playback. The client can use PLAY to start delivery and, where supported and appropriate, PAUSE to pause it.
  4. End the session. The client or server can use TEARDOWN to end the session.

That control flow is separate from the media transport. A successful RTSP connection does not guarantee that the client can reach the media stream or decode its format.

What port does RTSP use?

Under RFC 7826, an rtsp URI with no explicit port defaults to TCP port 554. An rtsps URI with no explicit port defaults to TCP port 322. These are standard defaults, not proof that a particular camera or server uses them; the device may have a different configured endpoint.

RTSP clients and servers are required by RFC 7826 to support RTSP over TCP. The actual media delivery still depends on the session’s description and negotiated transport.

What an RTSP URL looks like

There is no single camera URL format that works across brands. A URL’s scheme, host, port, path, and any authentication details depend on the device and its configuration. Check the camera’s own documentation and settings rather than trying a path copied from another model.

How to view an RTSP camera stream

First confirm that your camera supports RTSP and consult its vendor’s setup instructions. Not every camera offers RTSP, and a compatible client must support the camera’s stream and transport configuration.

  1. Enable RTSP and create any required camera credentials. Use the camera’s official app or documentation. For Tapo, TP-Link says to create a camera account in the app; do not substitute the separate Tapo account login.
  2. Find the camera’s local IP address and the exact stream path. Use the address and path documented for your model. For the Tapo example above, the guide lists /stream1 and /stream2; other brands or models may use different paths.
  3. Open the stream in compatible software. TP-Link names VLC, Agent DVR, Synology Surveillance Station, and compatible ONVIF software or NAS/NVR platforms as examples for its documented setup. Compatibility can vary by camera, client, and configuration.
  4. Use the stream for viewing or recording only after checking access and security. If the connection fails, verify that the camera and client can reach one another on the network, the address and path are correct, and the credentials are the camera credentials the vendor specified.

For its cameras, TP-Link identifies ONVIF Profile S support and says ONVIF can offer additional management features such as PTZ. Treat that as a vendor-specific capability: ONVIF support and available features are not universal across cameras or software.

Is RTSP secure?

Security depends on more than whether the address starts with rtsp. RFC 7826 defines the rtsps URI scheme for secure transport using TLS and specifies port 322 as its default when no port is given. The RFC recommends TLS and cautions that HTTP authentication alone does not provide full RTSP message security. Signaling and media delivery are distinct security concerns, so protection of the control connection does not automatically establish how the media itself is protected.

  • Protect credentials and stream URLs. A URL can contain a username and password, as in the Tapo example. Keep it private; anyone who obtains usable credentials and network access may be able to access the stream.
  • Keep camera access off untrusted networks. TP-Link advises using RTSP and ONVIF for its devices only on trusted local networks with encrypted Wi-Fi and does not recommend their use on public networks.
  • Avoid exposing a camera service directly to the public internet. NAT and firewall traversal can be difficult: RFC 7825 describes serious NAT issues when signaling sets up media streams that must also cross address translation. The IANA RTSP registry lists an ICE-related feature tag, but support depends on the implementation.
  • Check the whole path. Authentication, TLS, proxy trust, sensitive headers and URIs, media transport, and network exposure all matter. Do not treat a secure-looking URL scheme as a complete security review.

When RTSP is the right thing to look for

RTSP is useful when a camera, recorder, or media server and the intended client support a compatible RTSP setup. Before choosing a camera or recorder, confirm the exact model’s RTSP availability, stream profiles, authentication setup, and compatibility with the software or NAS/NVR you plan to use. A protocol label alone does not establish that every combination will work.

If you are comparing RTSP with other streaming protocols, start with the job you need done. Check whether you need session control or one-way distribution, which clients and servers support the combination, how media crosses NATs and firewalls, what encryption and authentication are available, and whether your target devices support it. Protocol names alone do not establish that one option is faster or better for your use.

A separate service for pre-recorded YouTube streams

StreamNeo is a different tool for a different task: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, rather than viewing or recording an RTSP camera feed. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; its cloud service loops the uploaded video, so your computer does not have to stay on.
