What Is Video Bitrate? How to Choose the Right Bitrate for YouTube Live

Video bitrate is encoded data sent each second. Choose YouTube Live’s recommended rate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then leave upload bandwidth headroom.

Video bitrate is the amount of encoded video data sent each second, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps). For YouTube Live, choose a bitrate from YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations for your resolution, frame rate, and codec—then make sure your upload connection can sustain the total stream bitrate with about 20% bandwidth headroom.

What video bitrate means

A video encoder compresses moving images into data for transmission. Bitrate describes how much of that encoded video data is sent per second: a higher rate generally gives the encoder more data to represent detail and motion, but requires more upload capacity. It is not the same as resolution or frame rate: those describe the picture dimensions and the number of frames per second, while bitrate describes the data rate used to encode it.

For a live stream, bitrate is a setting in the encoder you send to YouTube. It is not a promise of a particular viewer-side picture quality or a buffer-free experience. YouTube transcodes live streams into different playback formats, and the recommended ingest rate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate you send.

YouTube Live bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, in Mbps—not upload-file recommendations or independent test results. Choose the row for your incoming resolution and frame rate, then the column matching the codec selected in your encoder. Each codec has a minimum and a recommended value.

480p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p, 30 fps 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps

For example, YouTube’s recommended live-ingest value for H.264 at 1080p60 is 17 Mbps; its AV1/H.265 recommendation for that mode is 12 Mbps. Those are codec-specific starting points, not a guarantee that every encoder, scene, or connection will perform identically. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table.

How to choose your bitrate

  1. Choose a resolution and frame rate. Match the mode to your source and content. Higher frame rates can help represent fast motion, but require a compatible encoder and more bandwidth.
  2. Choose the codec your workflow supports. Find that codec’s column in YouTube’s live table; do not use a rate from a different codec column.
  3. Check real upload capacity. Measure outbound upload performance, not download speed. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Allow for audio and other streams in the bandwidth budget.
  4. Set a sustainable target. If the recommended figure does not fit your available upload capacity with headroom, lower the bitrate and/or resolution and test again. A stable lower setting is preferable to an unsustainable target.
  5. Test the actual setup. Test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream. While live, monitor YouTube’s stream health and encoder or network messages.

As a simple planning estimate, reserve roughly one-fifth of your measured upload capacity for headroom rather than allocating all of it to the stream. A single speed test is not a guarantee on a shared or changing connection. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and using a reliable connection in its streaming tips.

Encoder settings that affect a live stream

Bitrate is only one part of the ingest configuration. YouTube’s guidance lists the following settings; use the controls available in your encoder and confirm that they match your workflow.

  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Transport: RTMP or RTMPS are listed; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
  • Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube lists 128 Kbps stereo and 384 Kbps 5.1 in its advanced settings; audio also uses bandwidth beyond the video bitrate.
  • Picture format: square pixels and progressive scan.
  • Advanced video guidance: two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709; YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Encoder labels and available controls vary. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance gives the platform recommendations; check your encoder’s controls rather than assuming every option is available.

Choose between resolution, frame rate, bandwidth, and latency

Higher-resolution and higher-frame-rate modes have higher recommended ingest bitrates in YouTube’s table. The best mode is therefore the highest one your encoder and dependable upload capacity can support—not automatically the highest available setting. YouTube says 2160p (4K) live streams cannot use the “improve for low latency” option and are set to normal latency. If low latency is important, account for that trade-off before choosing 4K.

A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful way to connect your encoder to your router, but a cable does not increase the upload capacity of your internet service. YouTube notes that shared networks can limit the bandwidth available to an individual stream; test under conditions close to those you expect when broadcasting.

Do not use YouTube’s upload-file bitrates for live streaming

YouTube publishes separate guidance for uploading a finished video and for live ingest. Upload guidance is for encoded files submitted to the platform and includes variable-bitrate recommendations; live ingest uses its own resolution, frame-rate, and codec table, along with CBR encoder guidance. Use the live table above when configuring a live encoder. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams for different playback formats. See its separate recommended upload encoding settings only when encoding a file for upload.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream stability

  • YouTube reports connection or stream-health problems: Check that the total outgoing bitrate fits your actual upload capacity with headroom. Test the connection again; if capacity varies or is insufficient, reduce bitrate and/or resolution.
  • The encoder target exceeds the YouTube recommendation for your mode: Confirm the incoming resolution, frame rate, and codec, then compare the setting to the matching live-ingest column.
  • The selected bitrate appears too low for your chosen mode: Check whether you are reading the minimum or recommended column and whether you selected the correct codec. YouTube’s minimum is not the same as its recommended target.
  • Keyframe or ingest settings do not match guidance: Set a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), use CBR, and prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
  • The stream is unstable on a shared connection: Other network use can reduce the bandwidth available to your encoder. Test under realistic network conditions, or choose a lower bitrate and resolution that the connection can sustain.
  • You are streaming 4K but need low latency: YouTube sets 2160p live streams to normal latency rather than offering its “improve for low latency” option. Consider whether a lower-resolution mode better fits that priority.
