SRT ingest for YouTube Live usually means sending video over SRT to a receiver or relay, then forwarding it to YouTube using a protocol in YouTube’s published setup guidance, such as RTMPS or HLS. The YouTube public setup pages reviewed for this article explain RTMPS and HLS workflows, not a direct SRT URL and stream-key procedure. That describes the published guidance; it does not rule out private or limited options for particular channels.
What SRT ingest means in a YouTube workflow
SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) is a protocol for carrying a video feed between an SRT-enabled sender and receiver. It is designed for contribution links that may encounter packet loss, jitter, congestion, or changing bandwidth. In a YouTube workflow, that SRT link can connect a remote camera, encoder, or production site to an SRT-capable receiver or relay. The receiver then sends the feed onward to YouTube using a supported output route.
That distinction matters: an SRT address is not interchangeable with YouTube’s server URL. OBS’s SRT guide describes sending to a custom SRT destination; it does not establish YouTube as an SRT destination. YouTube’s published setup guidance reviewed here describes RTMPS and HLS ingest instead. OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide; YouTube HLS setup; YouTube encoder setup.
Choose the right route
| Route | Use it when | Setup distinction | Latency and format notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | You want a standard YouTube stream from a compatible encoder. | Enter YouTube’s RTMPS server URL and stream key in the encoder. | YouTube recommends RTMPS for the conventional encoder workflow. YouTube RTMPS instructions; YouTube encoder settings. |
| HLS | Your encoder supports HLS and you need HDR or a codec that RTMP does not support. | Create an HLS stream key and use the HTTPS URL. The encoder must meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. | YouTube warns HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Segments must be TS and last 1–4 seconds; the playlist must roll with no more than five outstanding segments. Requests use HTTPS POST/PUT; byte-range requests are not supported. YouTube HLS setup; YouTube HDR streaming. |
| SRT contribution, then RTMPS or HLS output | A remote SRT source needs a contribution link to a production receiver or relay before the feed reaches YouTube. | Configure the SRT sender and receiver to connect; configure the receiver’s separate YouTube-facing output. | SRT link buffering and transport latency are not the same as total viewer playback latency. YouTube’s reviewed public setup pages do not document a direct SRT destination. OBS SRT guide; Haivision SRT source guidance. |

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Prepare YouTube’s output first. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Choose the YouTube-facing protocol your receiver will use—usually RTMPS, or HLS if the format or HDR requirements call for it. Copy the matching server URL and stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions note that the default URL may be ordinary RTMP; reveal or select the RTMPS URL if you want an encrypted connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and encoder setup.
- Configure the source-to-receiver SRT link. Set the sender to deliver to a reachable SRT receiver or relay. Sender and receiver must agree on connection mode (such as caller or listener), the destination and network reachability, and the latency buffer. For an internet connection, check firewall rules and whether the receiver is reachable from outside its network. SRT requires a working path between the endpoints; creating an address alone does not open a blocked network port. See OBS’s SRT guide and Haivision’s SRT guidance.
- Set the receiver’s YouTube output. Enter YouTube’s RTMPS URL and stream key at the receiver or relay, or configure its HLS output if you chose HLS. The SRT input and YouTube output are two separate connections. Do not paste an SRT URL into YouTube’s server URL field.
- Match the output format. Confirm that the relay’s outgoing video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate fit the selected YouTube ingest route and the encoder’s capabilities. For HLS, follow YouTube’s segment, playlist, and HTTPS request requirements; do not assume settings that work for RTMPS will work for HLS. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Start the feed and verify both legs. Start the SRT sender, confirm that the receiver is getting its feed, then start its YouTube-facing output. In Live Control Room, check that YouTube receives the signal and inspect the preview before going live. Monitor encoder and relay statistics while streaming; if the network link is oversubscribed, reduce the video bitrate to leave room for stable delivery. Haivision’s SRT guidance.
Set SRT latency without confusing it with viewer delay
The SRT latency setting gives the receiver buffering time to handle network variation. It does not promise a particular end-to-end delay from camera to YouTube viewer. OBS’s SRT guide (published January 14, 2022) gives a 120 ms default and recommends setting SRT latency to at least 2.5 times the round-trip time between the encoder and ingest server. This is OBS configuration guidance, not a YouTube latency target. In OBS’s URL parameters, the latency value is expressed in microseconds. OBS SRT Protocol Streaming Guide.
Use the guidance as a starting point, then check the sender and receiver statistics on the actual network path. Too little buffer can leave less room to recover from jitter or packet loss; more buffer can add delay on the SRT contribution leg. Viewer latency also depends on the YouTube ingest and playback path.

When direct RTMPS is simpler
If the encoder is already at the production site and can reach YouTube, you may not need SRT at all. Use the encoder’s YouTube RTMPS preset if it has one. Otherwise, retrieve the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, enter both in the encoder, start encoding, and confirm the incoming preview. YouTube’s public guidance recommends RTMPS for this conventional workflow. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS; Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded recordings to run continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option—not an SRT relay or a camera-streaming service. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, and there is no need to keep a computer, OBS, or home connection running. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.

Troubleshooting an SRT-to-YouTube workflow
- The SRT sender connects, but YouTube gets no signal: Check that the receiver is actively forwarding its output to YouTube. Confirm the YouTube server URL and stream key at the receiver, not just the SRT sender.
- The SRT receiver never connects: Recheck caller/listener mode, destination address, firewall rules, and internet reachability. Confirm both ends agree on the connection settings and latency buffer.
- YouTube rejects the output or shows an ingest error: Verify the chosen YouTube URL and matching key, then check the outgoing codecs and encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance. If using HLS, verify TS segment format, the 1–4-second segment duration, rolling playlist limit, and HTTPS POST/PUT behavior. YouTube HLS setup; encoder settings.
- The picture breaks up or the relay reports transport problems: Check link statistics and whether the network is oversubscribed. Reduce the outgoing video bitrate if necessary, and make sure the SRT buffer is not set below the network’s needs. Haivision SRT guidance.
- The stream works but viewer delay is higher than expected: Do not treat the SRT latency number as the total YouTube viewing delay. If the workflow uses HLS, YouTube specifically warns that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube HLS setup.
Stream keys, copyright, and reused footage
A YouTube stream key is a credential: keep it private, and use the key associated with the stream and protocol configured in Live Control Room. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder or relay using it. Using SRT for contribution does not grant rights to the video or audio being streamed. Before broadcasting documentary footage, music, or other third-party material, confirm that you have the necessary rights and that your planned use complies with YouTube’s policies. A technically valid ingest connection does not guarantee that YouTube will accept or keep a broadcast available.

OBS documents SRT output to a custom SRT destination, while the YouTube public setup pages reviewed here document RTMPS and HLS. For a workflow using OBS as an SRT sender, send to an SRT-capable receiver or relay and configure that system to forward to YouTube. If OBS is sending straight to YouTube, use a YouTube-supported workflow such as RTMPS instead. OBS SRT guide; YouTube encoder setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SRT encrypt the contribution feed?
SRT can be configured with encryption, but whether a particular connection is encrypted depends on the sender and receiver settings. Check both endpoints’ configuration rather than assuming encryption is enabled.
