YouTube is the destination; OBS is the production canvas; the provider supplies the alert or widget. You do not need an OBS plugin for this basic setup.
What you need before setting up an overlay
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and be operated by a creator aged 16 or older. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance if Live Control Room is unavailable.
- Broadcast software such as OBS Studio. An encoder workflow is the relevant YouTube mode when you want a composed scene with overlays and production equipment.
- An alert or overlay provider that supports the events and widgets you want to show. OBS’s alert tutorial names Streamlabs and StreamElements as examples; neither is the only option.
YouTube Live Chat is distinct from an overlay: it appears on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. A chat widget placed in OBS is part of your composed video, whereas YouTube’s native chat remains a platform feature.
Choose and configure an alert provider
Compare providers by whether they support the YouTube events you care about, what built-in widgets they offer, how their hosted URL works with your broadcast software, and how much control they give you over appearance and event variations. Also consider how you will test and reuse an overlay across scenes.
Example: create an overlay in StreamElements
- Open StreamElements’ Overlays area and create a new overlay.
- Choose a canvas resolution. Matching your stream canvas is the straightforward choice; a smaller overlay can be useful if you intend to reposition it in OBS.
- In the editor, add an AlertBox, Custom Widget, or other elements you need. A single overlay can combine items such as alerts, chat, labels, and goals.
- Configure the appearance and event behavior, then copy the overlay URL provided by the service. Keep the URL private if it grants access to your editable or hosted overlay.
StreamElements also documents a YouTube-specific workflow using its SE.Live add-on: connect your YouTube account, choose a YouTube theme, configure AlertBox settings, copy the overlay URL, and add it to a browser source. The guide published May 8, 2025 specifies OBS v31.x or newer for that SE.Live workflow; that requirement is not a general prerequisite for OBS Browser sources.

Add the overlay to an OBS scene
- In OBS, select the scene where the alert or widget should appear.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add a Browser source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Alerts overlay.”
- Paste the provider’s overlay URL into the URL field.
- Set the Browser source width and height to suit the overlay and your canvas. For example, StreamElements’ YouTube guide uses 1920 × 1080 for a 1080p canvas; use the dimensions that match your actual design and output.
- Position and resize the source in the preview. In the Sources list, place it above background layers that would otherwise cover it.
- Repeat for another provider URL only if you have separate overlays; one bundled overlay can contain several widgets.
OBS’s official alerts and chat layout tutorial explains the Browser-source method and notes that a plugin is not required for this setup.
Test the alert and check the scene before going live
- Use the provider’s test-alert feature, if available, to check that an alert renders in the Browser source.
- Confirm the intended scene is selected, the source is visible, the URL is correct, and the overlay is positioned and sized properly.
- Check that the provider’s alert controls are not muted or paused.
- Watch the OBS preview long enough to notice clipped text, unexpected scaling, or rendering problems before starting the broadcast.
These checks verify the production scene, not whether YouTube has enabled monetization or a particular fan-funding feature on your channel.

Troubleshoot missing or stuttering overlays
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |

| The overlay is absent | Check that the Browser source has the right provider URL and dimensions, is visible in the correct scene, and is not hidden behind another source. | Correct the URL or resolution, move the source above obscuring layers, and check whether alerts are muted or paused in the provider’s activity feed. |

Provider editor layouts and button labels can change. If a menu differs from the steps above, use the provider’s current help page rather than assuming the control has been removed.
Keep alerts separate from YouTube monetization
Visual alerts and widgets do not require YouTube fan funding. Ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships are separate live-stream revenue features that YouTube makes available subject to eligibility and channel settings. A widget provider may display event information, but its presence does not grant access to YouTube monetization.
