To make a YouTube live stream private, create or schedule it in YouTube Studio and set its visibility to Private. Then invite each viewer using the Google account they will use to watch, and send them the stream’s watch link. A private stream is invitation-based: the link alone does not let an uninvited account watch.

Choose the right kind of access

YouTube offers three different ways to limit a live stream’s audience. Choose based on whether you want to invite named people, share access by link, or provide a benefit to channel members.

Visibility Who can watch Account and link rules Best fit
Private The channel owner and people specifically invited. Viewers need the stream link and must be signed in to the account invited. Forwarding the link does not grant access to another account. A controlled viewing group, such as a private screening for named guests.
Unlisted Anyone who has the link. Link holders can share it onward. The stream does not appear in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab. Convenient access when individual invitations are unnecessary and link sharing is acceptable.
Members only Eligible paid members of the channel; access can optionally be limited to selected membership levels. Eligibility comes from channel membership, not a private invitation to a named account. A live benefit for channels that have access to members-only streaming.

Unlisted is not the same as private: it is link-based, and recipients can pass the link on. Members-only is a separate membership rule, not another name for Private. See YouTube’s guidance on video privacy settings and members-only live streams.

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube’s general live-streaming requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and an account holder who is at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling; requirements and interface labels can change.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you are streaming from a phone

Mobile live streaming has additional requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no restrictions in the previous 90 days, and live streaming enabled. YouTube says initial activation can take up to 24 hours. It may limit the audience for mobile streams from channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, and archives for those channels may default to private. Check the current mobile live-streaming requirements. These mobile conditions do not mean you need a phone for an encoder or webcam stream.

Create a private stream with an encoder

This route is for software or hardware that sends a video feed to YouTube. Create the stream in YouTube Studio, set its visibility before going live, and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder.

  1. Open Live Control Room. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
  2. Create or schedule the stream. Open Stream to create one now, or select Manage > Schedule stream to set it up for later.
  3. Set the visibility to Private. In the stream’s settings, choose Private. Confirm the audience setting before you start the feed.
  4. Copy the stream URL and key. In YouTube Studio, copy the server/stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
  5. Start the encoder feed. Check Live Control Room as the feed arrives, then open the watch page to confirm the stream is working and has the intended visibility.
  6. Invite your viewers. Use the stream’s private-sharing controls to add the email accounts your guests will use to sign in. Send them the specific watch link and tell them to use the invited account.

Start a private stream with a webcam

YouTube also supports streaming through its webcam workflow. This is a browser-based camera and microphone setup, not a requirement for encoder streaming.

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live > Webcam.
  2. Enter the stream details and choose Private for visibility.
  3. Select the webcam and microphone you want to use.
  4. Start the stream, then invite viewers through the private-sharing controls using the accounts they will sign in with.

Follow YouTube’s current webcam live-streaming instructions if the labels or setup screens differ.

Help invited viewers get access

A private stream may be functioning correctly even if a guest cannot open it: private access is tied to the invited account, not simply possession of the link.

  • They cannot find the stream on your channel: Send the specific watch link. Private videos do not appear on the channel homepage.
  • YouTube says the video is private: Ask them to sign in using the exact Google/YouTube account whose email received the invitation. Switching accounts may be necessary if they have more than one signed in.
  • The invited account still cannot watch: Confirm the address on the private-sharing list and resend the link. Check that the invitation went to the account the viewer is actually using.
  • Someone else has the link but is not invited: The link does not give that account access. Invite that viewer’s account, or choose Unlisted instead if link-based access is appropriate.

YouTube has additional steps for viewers who cannot see private videos.

Check the replay after the stream

After ending the broadcast, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live and check the replay’s visibility. The archived video has its own visibility setting, so verify it rather than assuming the live stream’s setting carried over. You can change the archive’s privacy in Studio.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. See its current archive live streams guidance.

It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

  • Your computer and home internet do not have to stay on.
  • Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
