If the video has captions, YouTube displays the transcript alongside playback; select a line to jump to that moment. Some transcripts also have a search field.
View a transcript on YouTube
- Open the YouTube video.
- Expand or open the video description and select Show transcript.
- Read the transcript as the video plays. Select a caption line to jump to that part of the video.
- If a search box appears in the transcript panel, enter a word or phrase to find it.
YouTube documents this feature for videos that have captions. The transcript search field is available on some videos, not all. YouTube’s official instructions are in View video transcripts.
Get a transcript on a phone
Look in the video description for Show transcript. The exact placement of controls can change as YouTube updates its app and interface, so a specific sequence of taps may not apply to every device or app version. The description-based instruction is the stable starting point.
Why “Show transcript” may be missing
The video needs captions for YouTube’s built-in transcript feature. Captions may have been supplied by the creator or generated automatically, but automatic captions are not available for every video: availability depends on speech recognition and the video. - Check whether captions are available for the video.
- If the transcript control is still absent, there is no universal fix established for every device, account, or interface state.
- If no caption track is available and you need a transcript, a separate transcription service may be an option. Check its supported video types, output formats, privacy terms, and current cost before using it.
Download or export a transcript
YouTube’s built-in transcript panel is useful for reading and navigating a video, but the official viewer instructions do not describe a general download button. If you need a file, consider a third-party transcription service and verify that it supports the video and file format you need. A vendor-authored guide describes transcript downloads and transcription when captions are unavailable, but that is not independent evidence that any service works for every video: YoutubeToText’s guide.
Creators: add captions to your own video
If you manage the channel, use YouTube Studio’s Subtitles area. YouTube documents three approaches: upload a supported subtitle file, auto-sync text, or type captions manually. These creator tools add captions to your own video; they do not let a viewer change the captions on someone else’s channel.

- Upload a file: use a supported subtitle file, with or without timing.
- Auto-sync: provide text in the language spoken in the video. The language must be supported by YouTube’s speech-recognition technology. YouTube does not recommend auto-sync for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio quality.
- Type captions: enter the captions manually in YouTube Studio.
YouTube says automatic captions are in the video’s default language when available. See YouTube’s caption instructions for the creator workflow and conditions.
Use transcripts to find and verify information
A transcript can help you read along or find a specific moment. YouTube says viewers can also use transcripts to find chapters where available and identify people, places, and affiliate products mentioned in a video.

Automatic captions come from speech recognition, and YouTube’s cited help material does not give a general accuracy percentage. For names, numbers, quotations, instructions, or other consequential wording, play the relevant segment and check the text against the audio.
