To upload a timed SRT subtitle file, open YouTube Studio, select Subtitles, choose the video and subtitle language, then use the option to upload a file with timing. Select your SRT and save. YouTube also accepts transcript text through separate Auto-sync or manual-entry workflows when your text does not include timestamps.
Upload a timed SRT in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Subtitles, then choose the video you want to caption.
- Select Add language and choose the language spoken in the subtitles.
- Under Subtitles, select Add (the capitalization can vary by interface language).
- Choose the option to upload a file. Because your SRT already contains timestamps, select the upload choice for a file with timing.
- Choose the SRT file and save.
YouTube also provides a way to add subtitles during the video upload process. Studio’s labels may vary slightly; follow the current on-screen wording.
Check that your SRT has the right format
YouTube Help lists SubRip (.srt) as a supported basic subtitle format. The file must be plain UTF-8. YouTube does not recognize SRT style information, so do not rely on formatting or markup to carry over.
A typical cue has a sequential number, a start and end time, and caption text. This short example is illustrative:

For other supported subtitle formats, feature support can differ. Check YouTube’s subtitle file format guidance if you need capabilities beyond basic SRT.
Choose the right method for the material you have

YouTube’s caption instructions document all three routes. An untimed transcript is not a timed SRT: choose Auto-sync or manual entry instead of uploading it as a file with timing.

Use Auto-sync for a transcript without timestamps
Choose the transcript or file option without timing, then use Auto-sync so YouTube can align the words with the video. YouTube says the transcript must match the language spoken and be in a language supported by its speech-recognition technology. Its guidance does not recommend this route for videos longer than an hour or for videos with poor audio quality.
YouTube says synchronization may take a few minutes and that the transcript is automatically published when ready. That publication note applies to the Auto-sync workflow, not to uploading a timed SRT.

Set the subtitle language deliberately
When you add subtitles, select the language they are written in. YouTube says the original video-language setting helps YouTube and contributors understand the video and helps viewers find videos in their language. If someone else is contributing subtitles, YouTube says Subtitle Editor collaborators can add or edit them only when the video language is set; see YouTube’s video-language guidance.
Fix common SRT upload problems
- The file is rejected or does not behave as expected: Confirm it is an
.srtfile encoded as plain UTF-8. - Formatting is missing: YouTube does not recognize SRT style information. Remove markup or styling that depends on being interpreted by YouTube.
- Cues do not appear at the intended times: Check that each cue has a start time, an end time, and caption text, following the basic structure shown above.
- Subtitles are attached to the wrong language or video: Return to the video’s Subtitles page and verify both selections before saving.
- You have words but no timestamps: Use Auto-sync if the transcript and audio meet YouTube’s conditions, or enter captions manually. Do not treat untimed text as a timed SRT.
