To show different alerts for different events, create alert variations in your alert provider, assign each variation a supported condition, customize it, and display the provider’s alert URL in OBS as a Browser Source. If by “variations” you mean changing the overall look of your widgets, use a widget theme instead: themes change a broader group of settings, while variations choose an alert based on an event or condition.
Choose between alert variations and widget themes
These two features solve different problems. An alert variation is an alternate alert that plays when a supported event condition is met, or that may be selected randomly if the provider offers that option. A widget theme is a profile of widget and alert settings that you can switch to change the broader look of your stream.
- Use a variation when you want a particular event to get a distinct animation, sound, layout, or message—for example, a larger donation triggering a longer animation.
- Use a theme when you want a wider style change for a stream or scene collection. Streamlabs also describes using widget links from different themes in streaming software to combine widgets.
Streamlabs’ documentation describes both features. The exact variation conditions depend on the connected platform and event type, so the options shown in your own account are the ones to follow.
Create and customize an alert variation in Streamlabs
- Open the alert settings. In the Streamlabs dashboard, open Alert Box and select the event type you want to customize, such as tips or another supported event.
- Add a variation. Use the controls for that event to add a variation, then give it a descriptive name. A useful name states what triggers it and what it changes, such as “Large tip — longer animation.”
- Choose a condition. Select from the conditions Streamlabs offers for that event and your connected platform. For example, Streamlabs’ guide uses a tip of at least $10 as a threshold for a distinct alert. Treat that as an example, not a universal requirement or a condition available for every platform.
- Customize the alert. Set the available image or animation, sound, layout, text, and other event settings. Make the special treatment clear to viewers and appropriate to the event.
- Preview and save. Preview the variation in the provider, adjust it if needed, and save your changes.
Keep conditions easy to understand
Make each variation’s trigger and purpose clear. Where you define multiple thresholds, choose distinct ranges so it is obvious which alert is intended to play. This is practical setup guidance; available options and how they are applied depend on the provider’s controls for the specific event.

Know which conditions may be available
Streamlabs’ examples vary by platform and event. Its guide includes Twitch examples such as minimum or exact Bits amounts and raid party size; YouTube examples such as membership duration or level, gift amount, and Super Chat amount; and donation examples such as minimum or exact amounts, largest tip of the stream, and recurring tips. These are examples of documented options, not a promise that every connected account will show every condition.
Before building a set of variations, open the controls for the specific event and platform you use. If a desired condition is not listed there, do not assume it can be configured for that event.

Show the alert in OBS Studio
OBS Studio displays alerts supplied by a provider; it does not create the alert service itself. The OBS Project FAQ states, “OBS Studio does not directly provide stream alerts.” Configure the alert with your provider, then add its alert URL to the scene where you want it to appear.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
- Copy the provider’s alert URL. In your alert provider’s settings, locate and copy the alert or widget URL for the configured alerts. Keep the URL private if it grants access to your widget.
- Open the intended scene in OBS Studio. Select the scene where the alert should appear, or create a scene for the layout you want.
- Add a Browser Source. In the Sources panel, add a Browser Source and paste the provider’s URL into its URL field.
- Set the source dimensions. Choose width and height appropriate to the alert design and your scene. The right dimensions depend on the provider widget and overlay layout; there is no single size that fits every alert.
- Place and preview the source. Position the Browser Source in the scene and preview the setup using the provider’s preview controls or other available test method. Confirm the alert is visible in the intended scene before relying on it live.
The OBS Project’s alert tutorial describes this provider-URL and Browser Source workflow. If an alert is missing from a scene, check both the provider’s saved configuration and the Browser Source URL in OBS.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The special alert never plays: Reopen the event’s variation controls and verify the variation is enabled, saved, and assigned to a condition supported for that platform and event. Confirm the event actually meets the condition.
- The wrong variation appears: Review the conditions for overlapping thresholds or unintended matches. Make the intended ranges distinct and check whether the provider offers random selection for the event.
- The alert works in the provider preview but not in OBS: Confirm the Browser Source contains the provider’s correct alert URL and is present in the scene being shown. Check that the source dimensions and placement do not put the alert outside the visible canvas.
- The alert’s text, sound, or animation is not what you expected: Reopen the variation itself, verify the customized settings, preview the saved version, and confirm you edited the intended event and variation.
- You cannot find a condition mentioned in a guide: Available conditions vary by platform and alert type. Use the choices shown in your connected account rather than assuming the same options are available everywhere.
