There is no required purchase price to live stream on YouTube. If you already have a suitable phone, computer, console or camera and an internet connection, you may be able to start without buying equipment or software. Your actual cost depends on the streaming method, what you own, and any upgrades or ongoing connection costs you choose.
What costs are involved?
Separate the possible costs rather than treating livestreaming as one package:
- Platform and software: YouTube supports several streaming methods, and OBS Studio is free to use, including commercially.
- Equipment: You may already own the phone, webcam, microphone, computer or console you need. New gear is optional unless it addresses a specific limitation.
- Internet and electricity: These depend on your provider, location, equipment and usage. There is no universal monthly price for either.
- Production or cloud services: These are optional services for particular workflows, not prerequisites for an ordinary YouTube livestream.
YouTube describes live streaming as a way to “interact with your audience in real time with a video feed, chat, and more.” Its available methods include mobile, webcam, encoder and game console streaming. YouTube’s live-streaming overview explains the methods and eligibility requirements.
Can you live stream on YouTube for free?
Often, yes. If you have a suitable device, an internet connection and a YouTube channel eligible to go live, you can use an available streaming method without buying a separate streaming program. OBS Studio is optional: the OBS Project says the software is free for anyone to use, has no watermarks or use limitations, and permits commercial use. See the OBS Project FAQ.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s Help page says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; it also says creators must be at least 16. Requirements and product behavior can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance before planning a broadcast.
Choose a route based on what you already own
| Streaming route | What may be enough to start | When a purchase may make sense |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | A suitable phone and connection; YouTube supports mobile streaming. | If the phone’s picture, sound, mounting or connection is inadequate for your format. |
| Webcam | A computer with a webcam; a built-in camera can meet that basic requirement. | If the existing camera or microphone does not meet your quality needs. |
| Encoder software | A computer and encoder software such as OBS, which is free. | If your source, production setup or quality goal requires additional hardware or accessories. |
| Game console | A supported console streaming method. | Only if your chosen workflow requires extra capture or audio equipment; YouTube does not say every console streamer needs a capture card. |
For a talking-head stream, first try the built-in camera and microphone or an existing headset. For gameplay or a console broadcast, identify how the video and audio will reach the stream before buying a capture device. For a multi-camera event, equipment, operators and connectivity needs vary; get a quote for the specific production rather than relying on a generic total.

What do example equipment budgets look like?
A third-party guide from StreamerW, published in 2026, estimates about $150 for a starter set of peripherals and about $280 for a “best-value” setup. Both examples assume you already own a capable computer, so neither is a full computer-and-broadband setup or a universal price. Retail prices vary by country, retailer, taxes, condition and date. Treat the figures as dated examples, not a market average or a required shopping list. Read StreamerW’s setup-cost guide.
Spend only to solve a problem you can identify. If viewers cannot hear you clearly, an external microphone may help; if the built-in camera is inadequate for your use, consider a webcam. Logitech G’s product page shows examples of cameras and microphones with displayed retail prices, but those listings do not establish a general budget. See Logitech G’s streaming gear page.

Internet speed, bitrate and recurring costs
Your encoder’s bitrate is the amount of data it sends for the video; it is not the upload speed or price of your internet plan. YouTube advises creators to test upload speed and stream health, then choose settings that remain reliable on their connection. Its encoder guidance recommends a 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps, with a maximum of 6 Mbps for that setting, and recommends RTMPS. Those are encoder figures, not a recommended broadband subscription price. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for the full settings and current guidance.
Internet charges, data limits and electricity costs depend on your provider and location; the available evidence does not establish a universal monthly figure. Account for them separately from equipment and software. A livestream’s possible future monetization should not be treated as a guaranteed return on gear spending: YouTube says qualified watch hours can include public archived livestreams and exclude streams that are not archived, but eligibility accounting does not promise earnings. YouTube’s August 12, 2026 update describes that watch-hour treatment.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7
If your question is specifically about looping uploaded videos as a continuous YouTube livestream, that is a different workflow from broadcasting live from a phone or webcam. A DIY computer or encoder setup needs to remain operating, and a stream can be interrupted by local power, internet or software problems. For a 24/7 stream, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: it keeps uploaded video running on YouTube, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
StreamNeo includes one always-on stream per slot, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed. The same features apply across plans; only the billing length changes. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.

For an estimate before uploading, use the upload-time calculator, the cloud vs. PC cost calculator, and the copyright safety checklist. Quick Recap
A practical way to estimate your own cost
- Pick the streaming method. Decide whether you are going live from a phone, webcam, encoder, console or a prerecorded-video service.
- Inventory what you own. Check the camera, microphone, computer or console, internet connection and any accessories you already have.
- Test before buying. Make a private or otherwise low-risk test where appropriate, check audio and picture, and confirm your upload connection can sustain the chosen encoder settings.
- Buy only for a demonstrated gap. A separate microphone, webcam, capture device or lighting setup is an option, not a universal requirement.
- Budget recurring charges separately. Add your own internet, data and electricity costs only if relevant to your setup; do not assume one creator’s costs apply to another.
