For captions in a Twitch player, use a compatible caption source; for locally processed captions inside OBS, consider LocalVocal; for a searchable transcript, look at LiveScript. First decide whether you need platform captions, text burned into the picture, a separate caption feed, or searchable notes: those are different outputs, and no independent head-to-head accuracy winner is established.
Choose the output before choosing a tool
“Transcription” can mean several things in a live stream. A tool may recognize speech without delivering captions to viewers, and captions shown on screen may not be selectable or accessible through the platform’s caption controls.
| What you need | Output to look for | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewers turn captions on or off in the player | A platform-supported caption track or caption source | Requires a compatible source and setup; do not assume the platform captions every stream. |
| Words appear as part of the video picture | An OBS overlay or other composited captions | Burned-in text is not independently toggleable by viewers. |
| Viewers choose from configured languages or read a separate caption page | A separate caption feed | Viewers may need to open the feed separately; confirm language and access behavior. |
| You or a moderator need to find what was said | A searchable live transcript | This may not provide captions in the streaming platform’s player. |
For any option, check platform compatibility, languages and translation, delay and partial-versus-final text, transcript timestamps and export, local versus cloud audio handling, hardware and setup, plan limits, and performance with your actual audio. No comparable independent benchmark establishes an accuracy or latency winner among the products below.
Which tools fit which live-streaming workflow?
Twitch captions in the player
Twitch’s closed captions guide describes caption delivery through caption files or broadcast encoders and points to an OBS caption plugin as one way to provide live captions. When captions are available, viewers can use the CC control and adjust display settings such as size, color, and placement. This is a delivery path, not a claim that Twitch automatically captions every channel. Recheck Twitch’s current guidance when setting it up.

LocalVocal for locally processed OBS captions
LocalVocal is an OBS plugin whose project describes Whisper-based, on-device transcription and translation. Its listed capabilities include on-screen captions, partial transcription, TXT and SRT output, syncing captions with OBS recording timestamps, and sending captions to RTMP streams such as Twitch or YouTube. The project lists CPU and GPU acceleration variants; choose a build that matches your operating system and hardware. These are project claims, not independently benchmarked results. Local processing can reduce reliance on a transcription cloud, but the model and the streaming machine’s performance matter.
Hosted caption feeds and overlays
A hosted service may provide styled captions, translation, an OBS overlay, or a separate feed. A guide by Subanana, whose author says he runs the service, explains the distinction between text composited into the video and a separate caption page. Treat statements about Subanana’s own features and accuracy as vendor claims. Before choosing any hosted option, confirm where it sends audio, whether text is burned in or delivered separately, how viewers select languages, what plan limits apply, and what the provider retains.
LiveScript for searchable transcripts
LiveScript says it creates searchable text from YouTube and Twitch streams while they are live, and can transcribe other browser audio through a Chrome extension. That makes it a transcript and monitoring option, not necessarily a way to add a native caption track to your outgoing stream. Its FAQ states that words appear within 1–2 seconds in live mode, and its site lists a free tier of 5 minutes of live transcription per period and a Pro plan at $19.99/month. These are vendor-stated, changeable figures; check the current page for eligibility, limits, price, language support, and privacy terms.
Amazon Transcribe for a custom pipeline
Amazon Transcribe streaming transcription is for developers integrating speech recognition into their own caption or transcript workflow. AWS specifies supported streaming formats including FLAC, Ogg Opus, and signed 16-bit little-endian PCM; WAV is not accepted as PCM input. Its guide recommends lossless audio, uniform chunks, and, when possible, a 16,000 Hz sample rate. It discusses 50–200 ms chunks when the audio type allows chunk sizing. Supported languages and regions, quotas, and session-duration constraints vary. These are AWS-specific engineering recommendations, not universal settings for every transcription tool.
Does OBS add captions on its own?
No: OBS itself is not a speech recognizer. To include recognized words in an OBS composition, use a caption plugin, browser source, or a captured caption view. A scene overlay becomes part of the picture and is not independently toggleable by viewers. If you want captions in a platform player’s CC controls, use a compatible caption delivery method rather than assuming an OBS text source creates a caption track. A streamer-focused explanation of this distinction is available in Subanana’s live-caption guide; it is not OBS official documentation.
Will YouTube’s automatic live captions translate for international viewers?
Do not assume that automatic captions also provide translated captions. A Subanana guide dated July 31, 2026 describes YouTube live automatic captions as English-only and available in normal-latency mode; this is a secondary, vendor-authored source, so check current YouTube documentation and the settings available to your channel before relying on it. If translation is essential, verify that the selected caption tool supports the source language, target languages, and the delivery method your viewers need.

Do live captions get saved with the recording?
It depends on how the captions are delivered and recorded. Text composited into the video is part of that picture; a separate feed or platform caption track can have different recording behavior. LocalVocal’s project says it can sync captions with OBS recording timestamps and write TXT or SRT files, but that is a project capability, not a guarantee that every stream recording will contain a caption track. Before going live, make a short test recording and inspect both the video and any caption or transcript files you intend to keep.

- Pick the destination and output. Confirm whether you stream to Twitch or YouTube and whether you need player captions, burned-in text, a separate language feed, or a searchable transcript.
- Check language and delivery behavior. Confirm source-language recognition, any required translation, where viewers see captions, and whether text arrives as partial drafts or finalized lines.
- Check privacy and hosting. For cloud tools, read the current privacy documentation for audio transmission, retention, training use, access controls, region, and deletion. Comparable answers across vendors are not established here. For local tools, confirm which processing runs on your machine and what the plugin sends to the stream.
- Match the tool to your computer and workflow. For a local OBS plugin, check operating-system and CPU/GPU build requirements. For a hosted service, check connection, browser, extension, or plan requirements and limits.
- Test real stream audio before relying on captions. Test your actual microphone, game or program audio, music, accent, names and jargon, interruptions, and overlapping voices. Confirm the words reach the intended destination and that recording behavior meets your needs.
- Keep a correction path for critical content. Live recognition can be fast without being accurate enough for every purpose. If certified accuracy is required, human CART captioning is a relevant service category; this guide does not establish a particular provider.
How fast is real-time transcription?
Latency varies by tool, configuration, connection, and audio. LiveScript’s stated 1–2-second figure is a vendor claim, not a comparative measurement. AWS cautions that faster streaming transcription can have accuracy limitations. Evaluate delay and recognition quality together using your own audio; a quick display is not useful if names, technical terms, or overlapping speech are consistently wrong.
Common problems and fixes
- No captions appear in the platform player: Recognition text in OBS or a browser is not automatically a platform caption track. Check that a compatible caption source or encoder is configured for that destination.
- Text is visible in the stream but viewers cannot toggle it: It is probably composited into the video. Use a platform caption delivery path or a separate feed if viewer controls are required.
- Words are wrong despite a short delay: Test microphone clarity, competing game or music audio, names, jargon, and overlapping speakers. Adjust the audio mix or vocabulary/configuration if the tool supports it; do not treat low latency as proof of accuracy.
- Local transcription is slow or unstable: Check that the LocalVocal build matches your operating system and available CPU/GPU acceleration. The project does not establish a universal latency guarantee.
- Captions fail to translate as expected: Verify the source and target languages, translation setting, and whether translation reaches the same output your viewers use.
- Captions are missing from a VOD or recording: Determine whether you recorded burned-in text, a separate feed, or a caption file. Make a test recording and save any transcript or SRT export you need.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your separate goal is keeping a prerecorded YouTube video live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different tool from speech transcription: it loops uploaded videos, not camera input, and it does not create captions. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded quality streams as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I use if captions must be available in Twitch’s CC controls?
Use a compatible caption source or encoder configured for Twitch; an OBS overlay alone is not the same as a player caption track.
Is there a proven most accurate live transcription tool here?
No comparable independent accuracy benchmark is established for the options covered, so test candidates with your own stream audio.
