What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For a conventional single-output Twitch stream, start with CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose a bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoder your internet connection and computer can sustain together. A stable 720p stream is better than a higher-resolution stream that drops frames. Treat Twitch’s recommended profiles as starting points and test with the game and workload you actually plan to stream.
Start with Twitch’s conventional baseline
In OBS, open Settings → Output. Set Output Mode to Advanced if you need the separate streaming encoder controls, then configure the streaming encoder. For a conventional single-output Twitch setup, use:
- Rate Control: CBR (constant bitrate)
- Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds
- Bitrate: choose a value your connection can sustain consistently, using Twitch’s examples below as reference points
Twitch recommends CBR because variable bitrate can swing between quiet and high-action moments. Its guidance prioritizes a stable stream over settings that push connection limits or cause dropped frames. See Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines and OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate together
Bitrate is not a stand-alone quality setting. Higher output resolutions and frame rates generally need more bandwidth, and higher frame rates also increase encoding work. Match all three to the connection’s sustained performance and the computer’s capacity.

| Output profile | Twitch-listed bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6000 kbps | For a fast-motion stream only if the connection and system sustain it. |
| 720p60 | 4500 kbps | A lower-resolution 60 fps starting point when motion matters and the system can handle the frame rate. |
| 720p30 | 3000 kbps | A lower-bandwidth, lower-workload option to test if 60 fps or a higher resolution is unstable. |
These are Twitch’s listed examples, not guarantees for every home connection, account feature, or current Twitch workflow. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests starting near 75% of total upload speed when diagnosing dropped frames; OBS presents that as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee. Leave headroom for other household or computer traffic. A speed-test result alone cannot show whether the route to the selected Twitch ingest server is stable.
For a fast-moving game, test 60 fps if both your connection and system can sustain it. If they cannot, try 30 fps, lower the output resolution, or both. There is no universal best resolution: content, hardware, upload conditions, and viewer quality options all affect the tradeoff.

Set OBS canvas and output resolutions
Open Settings → Video. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace in which OBS arranges sources; it is often the game or monitor resolution. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the final size sent to Twitch. For example, you can keep sources arranged on a 1080p canvas and scale the output to 720p.
Choose output resolution and Common FPS Values together with your bitrate and system capacity. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be taxing and recommends testing your setup. If performance is poor, lower the output resolution or frame rate and test again under the same game workload.

Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
OBS offers software encoding such as x264 and hardware encoding available through supported graphics hardware. A hardware encoder moves work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. OBS says modern hardware encoders generally offer good quality with minimal performance impact, while older generations may produce lower image quality than x264 at the same bitrate. Which option is best depends on your actual hardware and workload.
If you use x264
Twitch says x264 can use substantial CPU resources and suggests starting with the veryfast preset, then experimenting. Be cautious with heavier presets: Twitch says presets above Faster require CPUs with six or more cores. A more demanding preset is not automatically a better choice if it overloads the system.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you use a hardware encoder
Test the available hardware encoder while running the game and other software you intend to use. Watch for rendering or encoding performance problems rather than assuming that a hardware encoder will suit every GPU and workload. OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide explains the general tradeoffs; it does not establish a best encoder for your particular PC.

Twitch transcoding can give viewers alternative quality settings, but availability depends on account tier: Partners are guaranteed full access, Affiliates receive it as available with priority, and other streamers receive it as available. OBS notes that a consistent keyframe interval helps quality options transition smoothly. Details are in OBS’s Transcodes article.

Twitch also offers Enhanced Broadcasting, which can automatically configure a stream and provide multiple client-side encodes. Twitch says Enhanced Broadcasting is required for Dual Format Streaming and its 2K workflow. If you are eligible and using those features, conventional single-output recommendations may not describe the whole setup; use Twitch’s current Enhanced Broadcasting setup guidance. The reviewed guidance does not establish a complete compatibility matrix for every OBS version and operating system, so check Twitch’s current requirements for your setup.
Test before you rely on the settings
- Prepare the intended workload. Open the game, scenes, overlays, and other applications you expect to use while streaming.
- Run a private test or otherwise test before going live. OBS recommends checking that the stream runs smoothly. Test the same scene and game activity you expect during a real broadcast.
- Check OBS statistics. If frames are dropping, first determine whether they are network-dropped frames or rendering/encoding performance problems; the likely cause changes the fix.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. For network drops, lower bitrate or try a different Twitch server. For poor rendering or encoding performance, reduce frame rate or output resolution, review encoder choice, and check game load.
- Repeat the test. Confirm the stream is stable at the chosen settings rather than relying only on a speed test or a short, quiet scene.
Troubleshoot dropped frames and poor performance
OBS reports dropped frames
Start by treating dropped frames as a possible connection problem between your computer and the Twitch ingest server, not automatically as an encoder fault. Lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS also recommends trying another Twitch server. On Windows, OBS says TwitchTest can help identify a server with a good Quality score. A different server or lower bitrate may help when the route cannot sustain the current setting.
The network is stable, but rendering or encoding struggles
Reduce the workload: test a lower frame rate or output resolution, review the encoder, and consider how much load the game places on the system. If using x264, a slower preset demands more CPU; if using hardware encoding, results depend on the encoder generation and system. Retest during representative gameplay.
Bitrate changes dynamically but the problem remains
OBS says dynamically changing bitrate can help manage congestion, but it does not resolve the underlying connection issue and may reduce quality. Use it as a mitigation, not as proof that the route is stable or a substitute for testing a lower sustainable bitrate or another ingest server.
Or let it run in the cloud
OBS is the do-it-yourself route for a Twitch broadcast. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service from Yorker Media—not a Twitch streaming option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving your computer on at home.
