The Children’s Train (Il treno dei bambini) is a 2024 Italian drama directed by Cristina Comencini and adapted from Viola Ardone’s novel. It follows a seven-year-old boy sent from postwar Naples to live with a host family in northern Italy. The film’s characters and plot are fictional, but its premise draws on a real postwar initiative known as the “Happiness Trains.”
What is The Children’s Train about?
Set in the aftermath of World War II, the film follows Amerigo, a poor seven-year-old from Naples. His mother, Antonietta, sends him north on a Happiness Train, where he is taken in by Derna. Away from the deprivation and familiar bonds of home, Amerigo encounters a different kind of life—and a painful conflict over where he belongs.
The story is framed by a 1994 timeline in which adult Amerigo is a successful violinist. The contrast between his later life and his childhood gives the film room to examine separation, care, poverty and the meaning of family. That is an interpretation of the film’s themes, rather than a claim about its production intent.
Is The Children’s Train based on a true story?
The film is inspired by real events, but it is not a true-story account of Amerigo and the other characters. Netflix describes the characters and plot as fictional against the historical backdrop of the postwar Happiness Trains.

“Happiness Trains,” or Treni della Felicità, were journeys that took children in need from southern Italy to host families in more prosperous northern communities. Netflix Tudum says the initiative operated from 1945 to 1952, was created by labor activist Teresa Noce and carried out by the Italian Communist Party with the Union of Italian Women. Tudum reports that around 70,000 children were relocated; that figure is its estimate, not an independently verified total established here. Netflix Tudum’s background on the film and the Happiness Trains provides that account.
Is the film based on a book?
Yes. Cristina Comencini’s film adapts The Children’s Train, the historical novel by Viola Ardone. The book and film tell the story in different media; the available information does not establish that one is more faithful or better than the other. The English-language edition listed by Apple Books is translated by Clarissa Botsford: The Children’s Train by Viola Ardone.
