To add custom alerts to a YouTube live stream, set up alerts with a provider such as Streamlabs or StreamElements, then add its widget or overlay to your streaming software. In OBS Studio, third-party alerts usually appear through a Browser Source. Customize the alert, add it to the scene you plan to use, and test it before you go live.
How YouTube live alerts work
An alert is an on-screen notification shown when a viewer action triggers it. You configure the alert in a provider’s dashboard, then connect that configuration to your broadcast scene using an integrated widget or a widget URL. In OBS, a third-party alert overlay is added as a Browser Source. OBS Project’s guide to adding alerts describes this Browser Source approach.
Choose YouTube as the platform in the alert provider: available event types depend on the selected platform and account configuration. Streamlabs’ YouTube-specific setup covers subscriber, member, and Super Chat alerts. Streamlabs’ YouTube alerts guide
Set up custom alerts with Streamlabs and OBS
- Select YouTube. Sign in to Streamlabs and select YouTube as the platform or account context. Open Alert Box and confirm the YouTube-related event types available to your account.
- Customize the event alerts. Edit the alert appearance and behavior for the event types you want. Depending on the event and provider settings, customization may include message templates and text-to-speech. Do not assume every option applies to every event; check the controls shown for that alert. See Streamlabs’ general alert settings.
- Add the alert to your broadcast software. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the Alert Box widget from Sources. In OBS Studio without the Streamlabs plugin, copy the widget URL and add a Browser Source: in OBS, click + under Sources, choose Browser, give it a recognizable name, and enter the widget URL in the URL field. Follow the provider’s instructions for the widget dimensions and other fields.
- Place it in the right scene. Select the scene used for your YouTube broadcast and confirm the alert source is enabled, visible, and layered where you want it in the composition.
- Test before going live. Use the provider’s test function. Confirm the alert appears in the intended scene and that its text and visuals are legible in your final layout.
Set up alerts with StreamElements
- Open the StreamElements Elements or Overlay editor and create or edit an overlay.
- Add an existing alert element or configure a custom alert box. The editor supports user-controlled visual assets and dynamic text.
- Copy the widget URL provided for the overlay and follow StreamElements’ instructions to add it to OBS as a Browser Source.
- Test the alert and check its visibility in the broadcast scene before going live.

Which alert provider should you choose?
Both approaches put a provider-configured alert overlay into your streaming software. Streamlabs documents a direct YouTube Alert Box flow and widget integration options; StreamElements documents an overlay-editor workflow. Neither is universally better. Choose based on the event types and customization controls available to you, the software you already use, and which provider’s editor is more comfortable for you.
- Event types: Check that the YouTube actions you want to announce are available in your account configuration.
- Integration: Consider whether you prefer an integrated widget or adding a provider’s URL as a Browser Source.
- Customization: Review the controls for message text, sound, animation, and visual assets that matter to your stream.
- Existing setup: If you already use one provider, its overlay may be simpler to manage alongside your other stream elements.
If an alert does not appear
- Check the widget or overlay: Verify you added the correct provider’s widget URL or integrated widget.
- Check the active scene: Confirm the source is in the scene currently being broadcast and is enabled and visible.
- Run the provider test again: If the test does not display, recheck the provider’s widget and OBS Browser Source setup before going live.
These checks address the documented setup path; they do not establish a universal cause for event delays, permission errors, or every YouTube API issue.
