For the simplest PS5 broadcast, start with the PS5’s built-in Broadcast feature. For Xbox overlays or multistreaming without a PC, consider Streamlabs Console, noting that its documented multistream setup requires Twitch. For more control over scenes and production, use OBS Studio on a computer fed by a capture device or a supported console app/Remote Play route. The right option depends on your console, the destinations you want, and whether you’re willing to use a computer or extra hardware.
Which streaming setup fits your console?

These are different kinds of solutions: PS5 Broadcast is a console feature, Streamlabs Console is a web-based Xbox service, and OBS Studio is PC software that needs the console’s video and audio supplied to the computer.
PS5: use the built-in Broadcast feature for the quickest route
Sony’s PS5 workflow lets you link a streaming service, start a broadcast from the console, and adjust supported broadcast options. It is the natural first choice when you want to go live without building a computer-based scene setup.
- Link a destination. In the PS5 broadcast workflow, link a supported service such as YouTube or Twitch. Some services may require two-factor authentication.
- Start the broadcast. Press the controller’s Create button, choose Broadcast, select the linked service, and enter the broadcast information requested on screen.
- Review Broadcast Options before going live. Set resolution and frame rate where available; the choices vary by service. Check microphone and party-audio settings, camera presentation, viewer-comment or activity overlays, and chat-to-speech where supported.
- Go live and check what viewers can see and hear. PS5 shares game screen and audio, not every console screen. Some game scenes may not appear. If party members’ voices are included, tell them before broadcasting.

Xbox: when Streamlabs Console makes sense
Streamlabs describes Console as a browser-based broadcast studio currently available only to Xbox users. Its FAQ says a PC or capture card is not required. You configure scenes from a phone, tablet, or computer browser, then select Streamlabs as the Xbox destination. The service offers overlays, alerts, widgets, scenes, and webcam options; supported widgets listed in the FAQ include Chat Box, Event List, and Stream Labels.
Know the microphone and destination limits
- The FAQ describes support for a headset microphone connected to the controller; it says separate external microphones are not supported.
- The documented multistream workflow routes from Xbox through Twitch. YouTube, TikTok, and Kick are presented as additional destinations alongside Twitch, not as standalone destinations in that workflow.
- YouTube live streaming may require account verification, which can take up to 24 hours, according to Streamlabs’ setup guide.
Streamlabs’ FAQ, dated September 5, 2025, listed a seven-day trial and subscription terms of $11 USD monthly or $79.99 USD annually. These are the vendor’s published terms on that dated page, not a guarantee of current price or availability. Its multistream guide is dated October 17, 2025 and reports a 2026 update; check the current vendor pages before relying on supported destinations or terms.

OBS Studio: bring console video into a computer
OBS Studio can produce a PC-based stream from console footage, but OBS is not itself the connection from a console to a computer. You need to provide the game video and audio through a capture device or, for supported consoles, capture a Remote Play or console-app window. OBS’s console-capture FAQ describes both approaches.

Route A: capture device
- Check that the capture device supports your console, computer operating system, and intended resolution and frame rate before buying.
- Connect the console’s video output to the capture device and connect the device to the PC as directed by its manufacturer.
- In OBS, add the capture device as a video-capture source, then confirm the picture and audio are present before configuring the rest of the scene.
- For macOS or Linux, OBS recommends a capture device with USB Video Class (UVC) support for best operating-system compatibility.
OBS names Elgato and AVerMedia as examples of game-capture-device makers. One optional example is the Elgato Game Capture 4K S: in a July 22, 2025 launch announcement, Corsair/Elgato claimed 4K60 real-time capture, zero-latency passthrough, preview delay as low as 30 ms, capture up to 1440p120 and 1080p240, HDR10 passthrough up to 4K60, HDR10 capture up to 1080p60, and UVC compatibility with OBS and other applications. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The same announcement gave a $159.99 launch price in 2025; that is not current retail pricing. Check exact compatibility and current availability before purchasing. Corsair/Elgato’s 4K S announcement.
Route B: capture a console app or Remote Play window
- Set up the relevant console app or Remote Play connection on the PC and connect the console to it.
- In OBS, capture the app window as a source and verify both picture and audio.
- Use a strong network connection between the console and PC. OBS notes that this path depends on a faster connection to maintain optimal quality; performance can vary with network conditions.
OBS documents these routes in its game capture FAQ, dated October 7, 2022. It also notes that Nintendo Switch-family consoles can use a capture device while docked; the Switch Lite cannot be docked and is not compatible with that capture-device route.

Overlays, destinations, and setup trade-offs

There is no universal need for a capture card. It is a hardware option for getting console footage into OBS; the documented Remote Play or Xbox app route can avoid one, with network quality as a key constraint. Likewise, the built-in PS5 feature may be enough if selected overlays and console-level controls meet your needs.

- Destination: Confirm the service is linked or selected and that the account is eligible to stream. For YouTube through the documented Streamlabs workflow, check verification early because it may take up to 24 hours.
- Audio: Test game audio, microphone, and party audio separately. Get consent from party members whose voices will be broadcast.
- Scene visibility: Review the actual broadcast view. PS5 shares gameplay rather than all console screens, and some game scenes may be unavailable.
- Compatibility: For OBS, verify the specific console, capture device, computer OS, resolution, and frame rate combination. For Switch capture, the console must be docked; Switch Lite is excluded from that path.
- Network: For app or Remote Play capture, test the console-to-PC connection before a scheduled stream.
- Rights and platform rules: Use game audio, music, video, and other material only when you have the necessary rights, and follow the destination’s current live-stream rules. A technical ability to broadcast does not establish permission to use copyrighted material.
Costs and what is—and is not—being compared
PS5 Broadcast is part of the console’s broadcast workflow; the sources cited here do not establish a separate software price for it. Streamlabs publishes subscription terms on its FAQ, which may change. OBS’s capture route can add computer and hardware costs, but no current retail-price comparison is established here. The Elgato figure above was its 2025 launch price, not a current quote.
