The backdrop alone does not create the effect: the color removal and compositing happen in software.
This guide covers the encoder workflow, YouTube connection, settings, testing, and fixes for common problems. If you only need to broadcast from a computer webcam without overlays or other sources, YouTube’s webcam route is simpler; encoder streaming is the route for combining a camera with gameplay, graphics, or external video hardware.
What you need
- A green screen backdrop positioned behind the presenter and visible in the camera frame. YouTube lists a green screen as optional equipment for gamers, not a universal requirement. YouTube says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
- A camera source, such as a webcam. YouTube also supports streaming directly from a computer webcam, but this tutorial uses encoder software to compose multiple sources.
- OBS Studio, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with its Chroma Key filter. OBS describes the filter as one that “Removes any instances of a given color from the Source. This can be controlled so as not to remove too much.” See the OBS Chroma Key Filter documentation.
- A replacement image, video, or scene to show through the keyed-out area.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your broadcast.
Choose the right YouTube streaming route
| Route | Best suited to |
|---|---|
| Webcam | A simple broadcast from a computer and webcam. |
| Encoder | A composed scene with a camera, gameplay, overlays, or external audio and video hardware. |
The green-screen workflow here requires the encoder route because OBS is where you key out the camera background and layer the replacement. YouTube explains the webcam and encoder options in its encoder streaming guide.
Prepare the camera and green screen
- Place the backdrop so green fills the portion of the camera frame behind the presenter. There is no universally required fabric, backdrop size, camera distance, or lighting layout established by the official guidance cited here.
- Check the camera preview. If the green appears visibly inconsistent across the frame, adjust the setup or lighting if available; uneven color can make it harder to tune a filter that removes a selected color.
- Frame the presenter with enough space that they remain inside the camera view while moving as they will during the broadcast.
Apply OBS Chroma Key to the camera
- In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast. In the Sources area, add the camera as a source if it is not already present, then confirm the camera preview appears.
- Open the camera source’s filters and add the Chroma Key effect filter.
- Set Key Color Type to green as the starting color, then watch the preview as the background becomes transparent.
- Adjust Similarity until the green is removed without erasing parts of the presenter. OBS’s documented default is 400; a higher value removes more pixels and can also remove pixels that should remain.
- Adjust Smoothness to soften harsh edges. Its documented default is 80.
- Use Key Color Spill Reduction to reduce traces of green around the subject’s edges, such as hair. Its documented default is 100.
- Use Opacity, Contrast, or Brightness only if the preview needs further adjustment. These controls are available in the filter; their best values depend on the camera image and are not universal.
The defaults above are OBS-documented defaults, not recommended settings for every camera or backdrop. Tune against the live preview and keep the presenter’s outline intact. OBS documents the controls in its Chroma Key Filter reference.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Layer the replacement background
- Add the background image, video, or scene as a source in the same OBS scene.
- In the Sources list, place the background below the keyed camera source. The transparent parts of the camera source then reveal the background underneath.
- Check the composition in the preview, including the edges of the presenter and any movement. Resize or reposition sources as needed so the presenter and background are framed as intended.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select an encoder stream and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube into the corresponding server and key fields in OBS’s streaming settings.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes it as the credential and address that tells the encoder where to send the feed.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview, then select Go live in YouTube when you are ready to broadcast.
The exact layout of Studio and OBS can change, but the key sequence is to enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder, start the encoder feed, verify the Live Control Room preview, and only then begin the public broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set encoder output and test before going public
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate together, and use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. The figures below are YouTube’s current recommended H.264 rates in its encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026; they are recommendations, not minimums or guarantees of quality.

| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
For context, YouTube’s listed H.264 minimum is 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; do not confuse those minimums with its recommended rates. Values differ by codec, so use the row for your chosen codec rather than carrying H.264 figures over to AV1 or H.265. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table, and run a speed test before choosing an output.
- Start an unlisted or otherwise non-public test stream before the real event.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast, as YouTube recommends. Watch whether the keyed edges hold up as the presenter moves and whether the background remains correctly visible.
- Check audio, video, and the OBS preview, then monitor YouTube’s stream health indicators and any messages in Live Control Room.
- If the feed or connection is unstable, reduce output demands or improve the available upload connection, then test again. A higher resolution or frame rate is not useful if the encoder cannot deliver it reliably.
YouTube’s testing and monitoring advice is in YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.

Fix common green-screen problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Green remains visible behind the presenter. | The selected key color does not match the captured green closely enough, or the captured green varies. | Check the camera view and adjust Similarity gradually while watching the preview. Improve consistency in the captured backdrop if possible. |
| Parts of the presenter disappear. | Similarity is removing too much of the keyed color range. | Lower Similarity until the subject returns, then refine the edge with Smoothness rather than raising Similarity aggressively. |
| Edges look harsh or have a green fringe. | The edge needs softening or contains color spill from the backdrop. | Try Smoothness for softer edges and Key Color Spill Reduction for residual green. Make small changes against the live preview. |
| The keyed area is transparent but no replacement appears. | The background source may be missing, hidden, or above the camera in the source order. | Add or show a background source and place it beneath the keyed camera source. |
| YouTube has no preview from OBS. | The encoder may not be sending to the selected stream, or the URL/key may not match. | Check that OBS is streaming, verify the server URL and stream key against the selected YouTube stream, and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Keep the key private. |
| The preview is unstable or YouTube reports stream-health problems. | The chosen output may exceed what the connection can sustain reliably. | Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, verify upload capacity, and test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate before the public broadcast. |
