You can go live with a device that captures your content, an encoder that sends it to the platform, and a stable internet connection. A phone or console may combine the first two; a computer setup usually uses broadcasting software such as OBS. A dedicated camera, microphone, lighting, capture card, and control pad are optional—choose them only when your format or workflow needs them.
The essentials: source, encoder, and internet
- Source: The video or other content you want to broadcast. It might come from a phone camera, a console game, a computer game, or an external camera.
- Encoder: The tool that prepares and sends the video to the platform. This can be built into a phone or console, be software such as OBS on a computer, or be a hardware encoder.
- Stable internet connection: The connection must sustain the stream’s outgoing bitrate. A fast connection on paper is not enough if it fluctuates or drops packets.
Twitch’s official FAQ puts the minimum plainly: “All you need to start streaming is a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video to the internet, also known as a video encoder” (Twitch Help: Streaming FAQs). A microphone is useful for spoken interaction, but it is not a universal platform requirement.
Choose the setup that fits your content
Phone or tablet
A mobile app can use the device’s camera, microphone, and encoder together. This is a simple route for a single-camera stream when the chosen platform supports broadcasting from its app. External audio or a stand may help with a specific production need, but neither is a prerequisite to test the format.
Console streaming directly
Many console workflows can broadcast directly, without a separate computer or capture card. Follow the console and platform’s current setup flow and check that the account has live-streaming access.

Computer with broadcasting software
For a computer-based stream, use a computer capable of running both the content and broadcasting software, an encoder such as OBS, and a stable upload connection. The exact computer requirements depend on what you are running, the resolution and frame rate, the encoder, and whether a demanding game or other workload is running at the same time; there is no single specification that fits every stream.
A computer setup is especially useful when you need to combine sources, arrange scenes, or manage a game and camera together. A microphone is a sensible addition when the stream depends on clear spoken commentary. Elgato includes a microphone in its basic setup guidance, while platform guidance does not make one mandatory (Elgato streaming setup guide).

Hardware encoder
A hardware encoder is another way to send a broadcast, particularly when you want a dedicated device to handle encoding. Its suitability depends on the source connections and formats it supports. Check that it can send a format accepted by the destination platform before buying.
When optional equipment is worth adding
- Microphone: Add a dedicated microphone if viewers need to hear your voice clearly. A USB microphone for streaming is one straightforward category to consider; it is not required for a stream with no spoken audio.
- Webcam or camera: Add one when an on-camera view contributes to the program. A face camera is not necessary for gameplay, presentations, or other formats that do not use one.
- Lighting: Add lighting if you use a face camera and the room does not provide consistent, flattering light. It improves the image; it does not replace the camera or encoder.
- Capture card: Use one when a console’s video needs to enter a separate streaming computer so software can combine it with other sources. It is not essential for a console broadcasting directly. Elgato describes capture cards as an OBS video source in its setup guidance (Elgato: What is a capture card?).
- Physical controls: A control pad can make switching scenes or operating a live production easier. It is a convenience for a workflow with live controls, not a basic streaming requirement (Elgato: What is Stream Deck?).
Set a quality your connection and encoder can sustain
Measure your upload performance under realistic conditions, then choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with headroom for normal variation. These YouTube live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, are examples for specific resolutions and codecs—not a guarantee that any connection will deliver them reliably.

| Codec | 1080p30 video bitrate | 1080p60 video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps — YouTube recommendation, accessed 2026 | 17 Mbps — YouTube recommendation, accessed 2026 |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps — YouTube recommendation, accessed 2026 | 12 Mbps — YouTube recommendation, accessed 2026 |
Use the settings that both your encoder and destination support. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1; up to 60 fps; a recommended two-second keyframe interval; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Not every device supports every codec or combination, so verify the settings for your encoder and stream destination in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Preflight checklist before going live
- Confirm the broadcast path. Identify whether your phone, console, software encoder, or hardware encoder will send the stream, and whether any external source needs a capture card.
- Check the platform’s current requirements. Confirm live access, choose the correct destination, and use the platform’s current stream-key and encoder setup. Keep a stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Match settings to the weakest link. Set a supported resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval. If the connection or computer cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate or quality rather than forcing it.
- Test audio and movement. Make a private or otherwise suitable test using sound and motion like the planned broadcast. Check that speech is intelligible if you are speaking, sources appear correctly, and the stream is not stuttering.
- Watch stream health while live. Use the platform’s stream-health indicators and respond to warnings rather than assuming a successful connection means a stable broadcast.
Common problems and what to change
Dropped frames or an unstable stream
Dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or the system cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable; if dropped frames persist, reduce the bitrate and test again (OBS: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues).

Video stutters while the connection appears stable
The encoder or computer may be struggling with the selected workload. Reduce the output demands and retest with the same game, sources, and effects you intend to use. Hardware requirements vary, so a setting that works for a simple camera stream may fail during a demanding game broadcast.
Audio is missing or hard to hear
Check that the intended microphone or source is selected in the app or encoder, that it is not muted, and that its level is audible in a test. If viewers need commentary, test while speaking at the distance and volume you will use live.

The console image does not appear in the computer
For a computer-based console workflow, confirm the capture card is connected in the intended signal path and selected as a source in the streaming software. If you do not need computer scenes or mixing, a direct console broadcast may avoid this additional routing.
Copyright and platform rules still apply
Having the right equipment does not grant permission to broadcast music, film, sports, or other copyrighted material. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and check the destination platform’s current rules before going live. A stream that uses reused or third-party material may also raise platform policy or monetization questions; equipment cannot resolve those issues.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different workflow from a camera-based or interactive broadcast: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running, so a computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo’s monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details, then start your free day. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
