To choose a setup, decide first what you need to control while live—scenes and audio, destinations, stream health, or audience signals—then match it to the right dashboard. No single analytics bundle is standard across streaming tools.
What “real-time analytics” means in a streaming setup
A typical workflow has two parts. Production software captures video and audio, combines sources, encodes the result, and sends it to one or more destinations. Analytics tools report what is happening with the broadcast or audience. The production app may include creator dashboards, but that does not mean it provides every audience metric natively.
- Production: scenes, sources, transitions, audio mixing, filters, encoding, and stream output.
- Live monitoring: stream health and metrics available while the broadcast is running.
- Reporting: processed figures such as watch time, retention, traffic sources, and audience breakdowns.
- Aggregation: a third-party service collecting supported data from connected platforms. Coverage depends on API access and connected accounts.
For documentary screenings, interviews, or live commentary, this distinction matters: a tool that reliably composes and sends the picture may not be the place to assess audience retention or compare channel performance.
Compare the roles before choosing software
| Option | Primary role | Useful for | Analytics considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Free, open-source production and recording software for Windows, macOS, and Linux. | Building flexible scenes from multiple sources, controlling transitions, mixing audio, applying filters, and extending workflows with plugins or scripts. | Use the destination platform or a separate service for audience analytics; OBS’s product page describes production and recording, not a full native audience-analytics suite. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Production software with creator features such as alerts, widgets, overlays, tips, and dashboard tools. | A guided workflow that combines broadcast production with creator-oriented features. | Feature availability varies by plan; Streamlabs documentation says multistreaming requires Ultra. Check current plan terms before subscribing. |
| Restream | Multistream connection and service with analytics for supported connected channels. | Viewing selected cross-channel data and chat-related information from supported destinations. | Analytics rely on platform API connections, exclude Custom RTMP channels, and can differ slightly from native platform totals. Restream’s documented analytics page says CSV and PDF export are unavailable. |
| YouTube Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics | Destination-side live monitoring and post-stream reporting for YouTube broadcasts. | Watching operational and audience signals during a YouTube stream, then reviewing processed video reports. | Live Control Room and YouTube Analytics measure and process data differently, so their values need not match. |
These tools serve different workflows, so there is no universal winner. For browser-based production or multiple guests, Restream’s software guide describes Studio; confirm current availability and feature terms before relying on a particular capability.

What you can monitor on YouTube while live
YouTube Live Control Room can show stream health and live metrics including concurrent viewers, peak concurrent viewers, duration, likes, chat rate, views, and average view duration. The exact metrics visible depend on the stream and the dashboard’s current presentation. See YouTube’s guide to live-stream metrics.
After the broadcast, YouTube Analytics provides processed reporting that can include watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. YouTube says some live-video reports, including peak concurrents and chat messages, may appear within minutes after a stream ends. That is not a promise that every report is immediately complete: Analytics is based on video ID and processed and despammed, while Live Control Room serves live operational monitoring.

What multistream analytics add—and what they do not
Restream’s Analytics can aggregate supported channel and stream information, including views, number of streams and average duration, chat messages, and channel breakdowns. It retrieves data through connected platform APIs, so it is not an exhaustive view of every destination or stream type. In particular, the documented analytics do not cover Custom RTMP channels.
Aggregated totals may differ slightly from destination dashboards because retrieval timing and aggregation differ. Restream’s help page also says CSV and PDF analytics export are not available. Treat the dashboard as a convenient cross-channel view, not as a perfectly synchronized replacement for each platform’s reporting. Details are in Restream’s Analytics documentation.

Choose by the question you need answered
- “Is the broadcast technically healthy?” Start with the destination’s live control room and its stream-health indicators.
- “How many people are watching or chatting right now?” Check live metrics at the destination; confirm whether the metric is live, delayed, or processed.
- “How did viewers behave after the stream?” Use the platform’s post-stream Analytics reports for watch time and retention.
- “How are several connected channels doing together?” Consider an aggregator such as Restream, while checking platform/API coverage, Custom RTMP exclusions, and metric differences.
- “How much control do I need over scenes, sources, and audio?” Compare production tools independently of their analytics features. OBS offers flexible scenes, mixing, filters, and extensibility; Streamlabs bundles creator features into its production workflow.
For a documentary or event workflow, it can be sensible to produce in one app and monitor performance in the destination dashboard. If you need multistreaming, evaluate the destinations and analytics coverage separately: a unified view is only useful for channels the service can actually connect to.
Basic equipment is optional and workload-dependent
The right equipment depends on what is being broadcast, the resolution, encoding method, computer workload, and desired audio quality. A microphone can improve spoken audio input, a webcam can add a presenter shot, and a capture card can bring in an external video source; none is required for every stream. OBS supports webcams and capture cards as possible sources and provides audio mixing and filters. Streamlabs’ setup guidance recommends a computer capable of running the content while encoding and discusses microphones and webcams as common additions.

Encoding choices also involve trade-offs. Streamlabs’ setup material discusses CPU-based x264 and GPU hardware encoding and notes that higher output resolutions can use more resources. Those are vendor guidance points, not a performance guarantee for a particular computer. Check your own system with the intended content and settings before a scheduled broadcast. For production and platform options, see the OBS Project and Restream’s guide to selecting streaming software.

Quick Recap
Common analytics pitfalls
- Comparing live and processed numbers as if they were identical: YouTube’s Live Control Room and Analytics use different measurement and processing, including despam processing in Analytics. Use the live dashboard for in-stream monitoring and the processed report for post-stream analysis.
- Assuming an aggregator covers every destination: verify connected platform support and API access. Restream excludes Custom RTMP channels from its Analytics.
- Expecting instant or exportable reports: some YouTube live reports may appear within minutes after a stream ends, but data is processed; Restream documents no CSV or PDF analytics export.
- Choosing production software by dashboard alone: scene composition, audio control, destination workflow, live health, and post-stream reporting are separate needs. List the signals and controls you actually need before picking a plan.
