There is no universal checker that can reliably identify every copyrighted song in any audio file or live broadcast. Use the platform’s matching or archive-review tools where available to find a possible match, identify the track and claimant, and then check whether you have permission for the specific use. A match is not a legal verdict, and no match is not proof that the music is cleared.
First distinguish song identification from copyright checks
These are different tasks. A song-identification service may suggest a title and artist for an unknown recording. A platform matching system compares audio or video with reference material supplied to it, and may then apply a claim or other action. Neither result, by itself, establishes whether you may use the recording in a livestream, upload, monetized video, archive, or clip.
- Song identification: helps you learn what a recording might be. Confirm the exact version and recording against reliable credits or rights information.
- Platform matching: detects correspondence with material in that platform’s reference system. Its coverage is limited to the reference material and system in question.
- Rights clearance: means confirming that the necessary rights or permissions cover your particular use. This is a separate inquiry from identifying a song or receiving a platform match.
No universal detection accuracy rate or tool that reliably checks every track in arbitrary files and all live-stream audio is established here.

If the video is on YouTube
Review the channel’s copyright or checks information after upload. If YouTube shows a Content ID claim, open it and inspect the matched work, claimant, affected segment, and stated action. The dashboard’s exact labels and navigation can change, so use the current information shown in your account.

YouTube Content ID compares uploads with audio and visual reference files submitted by copyright owners. It is a system for qualifying rights holders, not a public checker where anyone can submit any arbitrary audio file. Depending on the rights holder’s settings and applicable geography, a match may block a video, monetize it, or track viewership. YouTube explains how the system works in How Content ID works.
If it is a Twitch VOD or clip
Review any muted or flagged section in the creator dashboard and listen to the recording around the indicated time. Twitch’s copyright help material describes audio recognition that scans VODs and clips. That does not establish that every sound is identified during a live broadcast or that every match will be caught. Consult Twitch’s current DMCA & Copyright FAQs and dashboard guidance.

If there is no platform match
For an unknown song, a consumer song-identification app or service may help suggest a title and artist. Treat the result as a lead: verify the version and recording against reliable credits or rights information. The official platform sources described here do not establish the accuracy of any particular consumer identification app.
A missing match does not establish that a file is public domain, unprotected, or licensed. A platform may simply lack a matching reference for the audio. YouTube also recognizes the possibility of misidentified content, and says rights holders must have sufficient exclusive rights in the territories they claim. See its guidance on Content eligible for Content ID.

Check a live stream and its archive
While the stream is live
Do not assume that a platform’s VOD or clip scanning is a live preflight check. Twitch’s help material describes detection on VODs and clips; it does not establish universal detection of copyrighted audio before or during a broadcast. If you are uncertain about a track, the safer course is to stop using it until you confirm the necessary permission.
After the broadcast
Review the relevant VOD or clip and any platform notification, including the flagged or muted time range. A scan can help locate a potential match, but it is not a complete rights review: verify the claimant, track, recording, and relevant license terms yourself.

Music in games or background audio
Music audible in a game, documentary excerpt, intro, waiting screen, or background can raise the same rights questions as a deliberately selected song. Twitch’s November 11, 2020 guidance advised streamers not to play recorded music unless they own the necessary rights or have permission, and recommended checking a game’s official EULA when music comes from a game. That post is dated guidance; verify current platform rules and any library’s present license before relying on it.
Twitch reported that more than 99% of the notifications it analyzed from late May through mid-October 2020 concerned tracks played in the background of streams. That figure describes Twitch’s analysis and the circumstances in 2020; it is not a current rate or a measure of detection accuracy.

Before relying on a match, check the rights
A song usually involves more than one relevant right: the composition and the particular sound recording can have different owners or licensors. Confirm that permission covers the actual recording and composition used, as well as the relevant distribution and use.
- Who controls the rights? Identify the relevant recording and composition owners or authorized licensors; do not assume a platform claimant is necessarily the only rights holder involved.
- Which uses are permitted? Check whether the terms cover live streaming, uploaded video, monetization, VODs, archives, and clips. Permission for one format does not automatically cover the others.
- Where may you use it? Check territory. A license or claim outcome may differ by geography, and a rights grant for one territory may not cover a worldwide stream.
- What is the source of permission? Owning a download or subscribing to a consumer music service does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast a track. A label such as “copyright free” is not a substitute for reading the actual license.
- Does the license cover the platform and commercial use? Confirm the named platforms, monetization conditions, attribution requirements, and any restrictions that apply to your channel or project.
Twitch’s 2020 guidance pointed streamers toward rights-cleared libraries, including Soundtrack by Twitch, and advised checking the terms for the intended use. A library’s availability or name alone is not proof that its current license covers your platform, territory, monetization, or archives. Twitch also cautioned that a music subscription or purchase typically does not by itself authorize sharing music on Twitch, and that a performing-rights license may not cover global streaming.
What a match can—and cannot—tell you
| Result | What it can indicate | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Content ID claim | An upload matched reference material; the claim information may identify a work, claimant, segment, and action. | That every claim is correct, that the claimant controls every necessary right, or that your use is necessarily unauthorized. YouTube documents misidentification risk and provides a review and dispute process. |
| Twitch VOD or clip flag or mute | The archive system detected audio it recognizes in a recorded segment. | That all live audio is scanned in real time, that every track will be detected, or that the flag alone resolves the license question. |
| No match or flag | No match was reported by that platform’s system in the reviewed material. | That the music is public domain, unprotected, or cleared for your intended use. |
| Song-identification result | A service suggests a likely song and artist. | That the recording has been conclusively verified or that you have permission to use it. |
If you dispute a claim or find a flag
- Inspect the details. Note the claimant, identified work, affected segment, platform action, and any territory information shown.
- Compare the claim with your material. Check whether the matched segment is actually the claimed recording or composition, and whether the claimant and track information appear relevant.
- Gather permission evidence. Locate the applicable license or written authorization and confirm it covers the exact recording, platform, territory, live use, monetization, and archive or clip use at issue.
- Use the platform’s current review process. If you believe the match is mistaken or your use is authorized, follow the options and instructions shown in the platform account. Do not dispute simply because you recognize the song or have purchased a copy.
- Reduce ongoing risk while you check. If you cannot establish permission, remove, mute, replace, or disable the uncertain music in future streams or recordings as appropriate to the platform’s controls.
