Yes. OBS Studio is a capable free tool for recording YouTube videos to your computer, either on its own or while streaming. It lets you choose recording quality, encoder, resolution, and audio tracks; the right setup depends on your computer, the footage you are capturing, and the editor you use afterward. The OBS Project describes recording as a core use for OBS in its Standard Recording Output Guide.
What OBS is good at—and what to consider
OBS records video and audio from configured sources such as a screen, camera, or microphone into a local file. You can set up scenes and sources for a tutorial, presentation, gameplay capture, or other video, then record without sending a live broadcast. Its controls are useful when you want to adjust recording quality or keep separate audio tracks for editing.
The trade-off is configuration: you need to choose sources, audio inputs, output settings, and a save location. Higher-quality settings can create larger files and may demand more from the computer, especially with software encoding or older hardware. OBS settings are not a guarantee of a particular visual result; the source material, encoder, hardware, and workflow all matter. Make a short test recording with representative content before an important session.
Choose a recording quality and output mode
Simple mode for a straightforward setup
In OBS, open Settings > Output and use Simple output mode if you do not need detailed recording controls. The recording-quality choices include Same as stream, High Quality, Indistinguishable Quality, and Lossless Quality. If you are only recording, “Same as stream” may not be the choice you want; select a recording preset suited to your storage and quality needs instead. OBS notes that Lossless uses the CPU encoder and produces tremendously large files. Its guide estimates around 7 GB per minute for that preset, so avoid it unless you specifically need lossless output and have ample storage.

Advanced mode for independent recording controls
Choose Advanced in Settings > Output when you need recording settings independent of the stream settings, a specific encoder, or multiple audio tracks. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide provides starting values for available encoders, including NVENC, x264, AMD, and QuickSync. These are baselines rather than universal presets: the available encoders depend on your hardware, and the suitable quality setting depends on the footage and computer. For constant-quality settings, lower values in the OBS guide correspond to higher quality and larger files. A separate recording encoder can also consume additional system resources.
Do not treat YouTube’s upload bitrate recommendations as targets for OBS’s local recording bitrate. They describe encoding a completed upload, not how OBS must record it. Start with an OBS preset or encoder-specific guidance, then check the resulting file for motion detail, audio, file size, and smooth playback in your editor.

Set resolution, frame rate, and audio for the footage
Choose a canvas and output resolution that match the material you intend to record and edit. For a conventional computer-viewing video, 16:9 is a standard aspect ratio, but YouTube’s player adapts to other aspect ratios. Avoid changing frame rate without a reason: YouTube recommends uploading at the same frame rate used for recording. That upload recommendation is separate from OBS’s local recording controls.
OBS can capture microphone and auxiliary-device audio. Select the intended input under Settings > Audio or configure it as a source in the relevant scene, then check levels and listen to a test file. A separate microphone is optional, not a requirement for using OBS; it is useful only if you need voice capture and your existing equipment does not meet that need. For editing, Advanced output mode can assign audio to multiple tracks so narration, desktop audio, and other sources can be handled separately.

Pick a file format that fits your editing workflow
MKV when recovery matters
OBS recommends MKV for many local recordings because an unexpected interruption is less likely to leave the entire recording unusable. MKV may be less widely supported by some editors, so check that your target editor accepts the container and the codecs in your recording.
Remux for software that expects another container
If your editor or upload workflow prefers MP4, OBS includes a remuxing tool. After recording, use File > Remux Recordings, select the MKV file, choose the destination, and start remuxing. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video, so it is not a way to change resolution or improve image quality. Hybrid and fragmented formats
OBS also documents hybrid and fragmented MP4/MOV options. They are designed to combine some resilience from fragmented writing with broader compatibility, but editor support can vary. Check the exact container-and-codec combination in your post-production software before relying on it for a long or important recording.

YouTube’s current recommended upload encoding settings specify MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and the same frame rate used during recording. Its listed audio codec options include AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, with a 48 kHz sample rate. These are upload recommendations; they do not mean that your OBS recording must use a particular bitrate or container at capture time.

Those figures are YouTube’s recommendations for uploaded SDR video, not requirements for OBS recording. YouTube’s separate resolution and aspect ratio guidance explains how the player handles different aspect ratios. Do not substitute live-stream ingestion settings for upload encoding guidance.
A reliable pre-recording check
- Set up your scene: add and arrange the screen, camera, or other sources you actually need.
- Confirm audio: choose the intended microphone or auxiliary input and verify levels with a short recording.
- Choose output settings: under Settings > Output, pick Simple or Advanced mode and a suitable quality preset or encoder configuration.
- Select a format: use MKV when interruption resilience is important, or another OBS-supported format after checking editor compatibility.
- Record a representative test: include the same kind of motion, sources, and audio you expect in the real recording. Check playback, sync, image quality, file size, and system performance.
- Verify storage and destination: confirm the recording path has enough free space, particularly if using high-quality or lossless settings.
- Review the final file: before uploading, check that it plays correctly and that its container and codecs work with your editor or upload workflow.
Common recording problems and fixes
- The recording is much larger than expected: a high-quality or lossless preset can create very large files. Choose a less storage-intensive quality setting and make another representative test.
- The computer struggles during recording: high-quality settings or a separate recording encoder may add load. Test a lower-demand encoder or quality setting and close unnecessary workloads; check that the encoder you select is available on your system.
- An editor will not open the MKV file: use OBS’s File > Remux Recordings function to create an MP4 copy, or select a supported format before recording after checking your editor’s compatibility.
- The video or audio is missing: verify that the intended source is present in the active scene and that the correct audio input is selected. Make a short test and play it back before continuing.
- The upload does not match the recorded motion: verify that the uploaded file uses the same frame rate as the recording, as YouTube recommends. Check the finished export rather than relying only on the live OBS preview.
