Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a prerecorded video lags or freezes when it airs through StreamYard, start by re-encoding the source file with HandBrake. StreamYard’s guidance points to the video’s format and bitrate as the main things to check: use an MP4 with H.264 video and keep the bitrate at or below 10 Mbps. A wired connection can help with an unreliable upload, but it will not correct an encoding problem in a file that is already uploaded.
First identify when the problem happens
Separate an upload problem from a playback problem. If the upload is slow, fails, or appears interrupted, check the connection between your computer and StreamYard. If the video uploads successfully but lags or freezes when the scheduled broadcast airs, focus first on the source file’s format, bitrate, and encoding.
StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream FAQ phrases the issue as “Why is my pre-recorded stream lagging?” and recommends re-encoding with HandBrake. Its optimization guidance says reducing a video above the supported bitrate ceiling may prevent lagging and freezing.
Check the video against StreamYard’s published guidance
- Container: MP4.
- Video encoding: H.264.
- Bitrate: no more than 10 Mbps for prerecorded uploads, according to StreamYard’s Help Center guidance accessed in 2026. If the source exceeds that ceiling, reduce it when re-encoding.
- Web optimization: enable Web Optimized (also called fast-start) in HandBrake, as StreamYard’s optimization instructions recommend.
- Audio/video alignment: enable Align A/V Start in HandBrake, following the same instructions.
These are StreamYard product recommendations and limits, not a guarantee that every file within them will play without issues. If a compliant file still lags, re-encode it and test the resulting file before scheduling another broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Re-encode the source file in HandBrake
- Open the original video in HandBrake. Work from the source file rather than repeatedly converting an already-compressed copy, if the original is available.
- Choose MP4 as the format. StreamYard’s upload guidance identifies MP4 with H.264 video.
- Set the video encoder to H.264. Use a bitrate at or below 10 Mbps. If the original is above 10 Mbps, reduce it; StreamYard specifically advises lowering a bitrate above its maximum.
- Open the audio/video settings and enable Align A/V Start.
- Enable Web Optimized. This creates a fast-start MP4 suitable for web playback, as recommended in StreamYard’s optimization guidance.
- Encode and inspect the output. Confirm the new file is MP4 and check that its bitrate is within the stated ceiling. Play it locally and, if possible, upload and schedule a test before relying on it for an important broadcast.
- Replace the uploaded source in StreamYard with the re-encoded file. Check the scheduled broadcast’s playback rather than assuming that changing the local copy also updates a video already uploaded to StreamYard.
StreamYard’s instructions are available in its video optimization guide and its prerecorded-stream help article.
If the upload itself is the problem
For a slow or unreliable upload, check whether the local connection drops or fluctuates. StreamYard recommends Ethernet when possible for consistency; its requirements guidance says Wi-Fi works in most cases but may cause issues. This advice concerns the upload connection. It does not establish that Ethernet fixes lag or freezing during playback of a video already uploaded.

StreamYard’s live-broadcast speed guidance recommends at least 5 Mbps upload, with 7 Mbps or higher preferred. Those figures concern live streaming, not the bitrate of a prerecorded video file; do not use them as a substitute for checking the file’s encoding and 10 Mbps upload bitrate ceiling. See StreamYard’s internet speed requirements and prerecorded-stream guidance.
Check the upload size and duration for your plan
StreamYard’s prerecorded-stream help page lists the following limits. Plan details can change, so check the current help page and your account before preparing a long or large file.

| StreamYard plan | Listed upload limit | Listed prerecorded video duration limit |
|---|---|---|
| Core | 10 GB | 2 hours |
| Advanced | 10 GB | 4 hours |
| Teams | 25 GB | 8 hours |
| Business | 25 GB | 8 hours |
These are plan limits stated by StreamYard Help Center, accessed in 2026; the help pages do not provide publication dates for these figures. A file that exceeds the current limit may fail to upload or be unusable for the intended broadcast, which is a different issue from buffering during playback.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The video freezes or lags during the broadcast
- Re-encode the source in HandBrake using MP4, H.264, Align A/V Start, and Web Optimized.
- Check that the bitrate is no higher than 10 Mbps; reduce it if necessary.
- Upload the new output and verify that the broadcast uses that replacement file.
The file uploads slowly or the upload fails
- Check connection stability; use Ethernet if practical.
- Confirm the file is within your plan’s current upload-size and duration limits.
- If the connection is steady but the video later lags on air, return to file encoding rather than treating upload speed as the likely fix.
The re-encoded video still has a problem
- Confirm the export is actually MP4 with H.264 video and not merely renamed with an .mp4 extension.
- Check the exported bitrate, rather than assuming HandBrake’s settings produced the intended result.
- Try encoding from the original source again, then upload the new export as a fresh prerecorded video.
- Consult StreamYard’s current help pages or support if the file meets the documented requirements but continues to lag.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock rather than host a single StreamYard broadcast, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. Streams are sent to YouTube only.
