Use Open Job Description (OpenJD) to define and run a batch workflow, and FFmpeg to process the media inside one of its steps. A practical starting point is a parameterized encode job: declare the input and durable output paths, invoke FFmpeg in an action, validate the template with the OpenJD CLI, then run it locally. If your workflow renders frames first, add a dependent step that encodes those frames into a video.
What OpenJD and FFmpeg each do
OpenJD is a portable description for batch-processing jobs; it defines job structure, parameters, steps, and executable actions. FFmpeg is the media-processing command-line application that an action can call to inspect, convert, or encode media. OpenJD does not encode video, and a job template does not install FFmpeg: the runtime environment must have the executable available. See the OpenJD specifications project and the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Build a one-step FFmpeg encode job
Start with a tested FFmpeg command, then pass its executable and arguments as the step action. The following abbreviated template illustrates the shape: it declares a file input and a directory output, then substitutes those parameters into an FFmpeg invocation.

This is a conceptual excerpt, not a complete template guaranteed to validate in every OpenJD implementation. Check the required fields and supported specification version for the implementation you use. The AWS walkthrough gives a fuller template pattern, including an image-sequence input, an output directory, and an FFmpeg action.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Choose the output path deliberately
Make the output directory an explicit parameter or otherwise write to a location the job environment preserves. In the AWS CLI walkthrough, the generated script runs from temporary space that is cleaned up after execution. A relative path such as ./output.mp4 can therefore put the result in that temporary location, where cleanup removes it. Parameterizing a durable output destination avoids relying on the script’s working directory.
Adapt encoding options to the source and delivery target
The AWS example uses a 24 fps image sequence and includes H.264 encoding, a pixel format, color metadata, and MP4 fast-start behavior. Those are choices in that walkthrough, not universal settings. Select codec, frame rate, pixel format, color properties, and container based on the actual source and playback requirements; verify the resulting file and its metadata for your workflow.

Preserve FFmpeg argument order and stream selection
FFmpeg accepts input and output files in one command, and options generally apply to the next file named. Keep the order from a command you have tested when moving it into the OpenJD argument list: input-specific options belong before the relevant input, while output options belong before the output they configure. See the FFmpeg documentation for command behavior.
FFmpeg may select streams automatically according to the output format. For sources with multiple audio tracks, subtitles, or other unusual stream layouts, inspect the input and consider explicit -map arguments so the output contains the streams you intend. Do not assume an automatically selected track is the right one for every file.

Validate, inspect, and run with the OpenJD CLI
The OpenJD CLI documents commands for validating a template, inspecting its parameters and tasks, and running a job locally. Exact command availability and options depend on the CLI release installed; consult its README and current CLI documentation.
- Check the template: run
openjd checkwith the template to identify validation errors before execution. - Inspect the job: run
openjd summaryto review the declared parameters, steps, and tasks. Confirm that the input, output, and task selections match your intended run. - Run a local step: use
openjd runto execute the selected step locally, passing the job parameters and task parameters required by the template. The CLI documentation describes selecting tasks and including dependency steps where needed. - Verify the artifact: check the output location, open or probe the encoded file, and confirm that the expected streams and playback properties are present.
Local execution is useful for checking a template and command, but it does not establish that a separate scheduler has identical software, storage, permissions, or environment configuration. Ensure the deployment provides FFmpeg and makes the job’s input and output paths accessible.

Extend the job to render frames, then encode video
A multi-step job makes the handoff from rendering to encoding explicit. The official Blender–FFmpeg sample template defines a RenderScene step and a CreateVideoFromRender step that depends on it. The latter invokes FFmpeg over the generated frame sequence.
- Render: configure the first step to produce frames at a known path and naming pattern.
- Declare the dependency: make the encode step depend on the render step so it does not run before its frames are ready.
- Encode: point FFmpeg at the rendered sequence, set the intended frame rate and output options, and write the result to a preserved output location.
- Test the handoff: verify that the scheduler or local runner exposes the rendered files to the dependent step in the expected location. Storage and environment behavior can vary by deployment.
The sample’s requirements comment says it was tested with Blender 4.0.2 and FFmpeg 6.1.1. Those are sample-specific tested versions, not a guarantee of compatibility with current releases or every scheduler.

- The job cannot find FFmpeg: the executable is missing from the runtime environment or not on its command search path. Install or expose FFmpeg in the environment that runs the step, then verify the executable there.
- The output disappears after the run: the output was written under a temporary working directory. Pass a durable destination as a parameter and confirm the runtime preserves or collects that location.
- The template fails validation: the example excerpt omits fields that a complete template may require, or the declared version/features do not match the CLI. Validate with the installed CLI and consult the matching OpenJD implementation documentation.
- The output has the wrong audio, subtitles, or other stream: automatic stream selection did not match the intended result. Inspect the source and use explicit
-mapselections when needed. - The encode step starts without usable frames: the dependency or artifact handoff is incomplete. Declare the render-step dependency and check how the local runner or scheduler shares the generated files.
- A local run works but deployment fails: compare executable availability, paths, permissions, parameter values, and storage behavior between the local environment and scheduler deployment.
