How to Use AR and 3D Graphics in Live Gaming Streams

Add flat graphics to an OBS scene, send that composition through OBS Virtual Camera, or use LIV for supported VR mixed-reality capture. Here is how to choose and test each method.

To add graphics to a gaming stream, compose them with your gameplay and camera in a scene in OBS. That creates a conventional video overlay. For game-aware mixed reality—such as putting a real player into VR gameplay—you need a compatible game and capture workflow such as LIV, plus camera setup and calibration. If another app needs to receive your OBS composition like a webcam, OBS Virtual Camera can provide it.

What counts as AR or 3D graphics in a stream?

A graphic layered over a stream is not automatically augmented reality. A logo, lower third, animated alert, or flat frame is composited into the outgoing video; it can be positioned on screen without knowing anything about the game or the real room. AR-like or mixed-reality content is tied more closely to a scene: its perspective, position, depth, or occlusion may depend on game integration, tracking, or camera alignment.

In the ordinary desktop model, streaming software combines captured gameplay, camera video, and graphic sources into a two-dimensional output. More specialized VR mixed-reality capture can combine real camera footage of a player with virtual game elements. These approaches have different setup requirements and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Add graphics to a standard desktop stream with OBS

  1. Create the composition. In OBS, add or select a scene and include the game capture and any camera or graphic elements you want viewers to see. A conventional image, browser-based graphic, or animation can be included as a source in that composition. Position and size elements so they do not obscure important gameplay information.
  2. Check what viewers will see. Review the composed scene, including transitions and any animated elements, before going live. Keep private information and editing-only material out of the viewer-facing composition.
  3. Test the finished output. Check the stream in the actual destination or a private test before a public broadcast. Confirm that gameplay, camera, and graphics are visible and readable at the size viewers will use.

This is the practical choice for most desktop overlays: the graphic is part of the video composition, not a tracked object in the game world.

Use OBS Virtual Camera to send the scene to another app

OBS Virtual Camera exposes an OBS output as a webcam-style feed for applications that accept a camera input. OBS documents using it when an application needs webcam video, including cases where direct screen capture is unavailable. It is distinct from streaming directly to a platform.

  1. In OBS, prepare the scene or source you want the receiving application to see.
  2. In the OBS Controls dock, start Start Virtual Camera.
  3. Open the receiving application and select OBS Virtual Camera as its camera input.
  4. If needed, use the virtual camera settings to choose the output: Program, Preview, a Scene, or a Source. Choose Program when the app should receive the normal OBS output. Avoid Preview if you use Studio Mode and need edits to remain private: Preview output exposes changes made there.
  5. Verify the feed inside the receiving app before going live. Camera options and behavior can differ by application, so test the actual destination rather than assuming it accepts the feed as expected.

OBS’s guide explains the virtual camera’s purpose and output modes: OBS Virtual Camera Guide.

Put a real player into VR gameplay with LIV

LIV’s creator workflow is for supported games and can composite real camera footage with virtual game elements. Compatibility and requirements depend on the game and capture mode. LIV describes its SDK as a developer integration for adding support; creators generally do not install the SDK just to capture a game that is already supported. Check LIV’s current documentation for the selected game and mode before planning a setup: What is LIV?

  1. Check compatibility first. Confirm that the game and the intended LIV capture mode are supported. Do not assume that one mode’s runtime or platform requirements apply to every LIV workflow.
  2. Start mixed-reality capture and select the camera. Add or select the camera device you intend to use, then choose a resolution that matches that camera. LIV’s setup guidance also calls out ARGB when using NVIDIA Broadcast in the described setup.
  3. Capture LIV Output in OBS. Add the LIV Output window to the OBS composition so the mixed-reality image becomes part of the broadcast.
  4. Check alignment and compositing. Test the output rather than relying only on the initial preview. Look at calibration and alignment, whether foreground elements behave as expected, and controller latency.
  5. Plan for the camera background. LIV says its documented real-camera workflow does not provide live background segmentation. For that use, its guidance recommends a green screen and calibration. A green screen is not necessary for ordinary OBS overlays or every mixed-reality setup.

See LIV’s mixed-reality setup documentation for its camera and calibration guidance. Compatibility details may change, so verify the current instructions for your game and mode.

Choose the method that matches the effect

Approach What it combines What to verify
OBS scene graphics Gameplay, camera, and flat graphic elements in the outgoing video Layout, readability, and correct scene output
OBS Virtual Camera An OBS scene, preview, scene, or source sent as webcam-style video Receiving-app compatibility and the selected output mode
LIV mixed-reality capture Real player/camera footage with virtual game elements Supported game and capture mode, camera choice, resolution, calibration, and compositing behavior

A conventional overlay can be simple to set up because it is placed in a video scene. Mixed reality is more specialized: game compatibility, camera placement, tracking, alignment, and occlusion behavior can all matter. Visual quality, latency, and reliability depend on the individual system; there is no basis here for ranking these options on those measures.

A research prototype described by Hartmann and Vogel at CHI 2022 reconstructed an interactive 3D game view for spectators, distinguishing it from conventional 2D livestream video. That is a separate concept: ordinary OBS overlays do not turn a stream into a spectator-controlled 3D game view. Read the CHI 2022 paper.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • The receiving app cannot see OBS Virtual Camera: Confirm the virtual camera is started in OBS, then reopen or refresh the camera selection in the receiving app. Test another application that accepts webcam video to isolate whether the issue is destination-specific.
  • The receiving app shows edits you did not intend to share: Check the virtual camera output mode. If Studio Mode is in use, select Program rather than Preview when private scene edits must stay hidden.
  • A graphic is missing or covers the wrong area: Check the selected OBS scene and the graphic’s placement within that scene. Review the actual composed output, not just an isolated source.
  • The LIV result looks misaligned or the player is composited incorrectly: Recheck camera selection, camera-matched resolution, calibration, and foreground behavior. Test controller latency in the LIV Output composition.
  • The real camera background remains visible: LIV’s documented real-camera workflow does not offer live segmentation. Use the green-screen-and-calibration approach LIV recommends if that workflow fits your setup.
  • The LIV capture path will not start: Reconfirm support for the specific game and mode, and follow that mode’s current platform and runtime requirements. Requirements documented for one mode should not be generalized to all LIV capture.
