If YouTube says your live stream or its archive is “blocked in some countries or regions,” open the claim in YouTube Studio and check the matched content, claimant, affected territories, and available actions. The notice usually means a Content ID claimant has applied a territorial block; by itself, it does not mean your video was removed or that your channel received a copyright strike.
First, identify what happened to the video
The right response depends on whether the broadcast is still live, the archive is available only in some places, or YouTube has removed the video after a formal copyright removal request. These are different situations with different risks.
- Ongoing live stream: YouTube scans live broadcasts for matches to third-party content. If a match is detected, the stream may be interrupted or terminated unless you address the warning and remove the matched content. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
- Archived stream with a Content ID claim: The archive may remain available in some territories and be blocked in others under the claimant’s policy. YouTube says an archived live stream can receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends if you choose to archive it. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
- Video removed after a copyright removal request: This is a formal takedown, not simply a territorial Content ID block. A valid request removes the video and applies a copyright strike. A counter notification is relevant only if you believe this removal was mistaken or based on misidentification. YouTube Help: Copyright removal requests.
Check the claim in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select the affected live stream archive or video.
- Open the copyright restriction or claim details, then select Copyright Details to inspect the content YouTube identified.
- Check the claimant, the affected territories, and the actions YouTube offers for this specific claim. A Content ID policy can block, monetize, or track a video; a block can be worldwide or limited by territory, while monetize and track policies leave the video live. - If the stream is still live, stop or remove the matched third-party material and follow the on-screen warning. If you have permission, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, and confirm the allowlist covers the relevant channel and content. - If the archive is claimed, use an available option to remove or replace the claimed material where that resolves the issue; otherwise, assess whether you have a valid basis to dispute before taking that step. YouTube Help: Fix copyright issues.
Choose a response that matches your rights

Understand disputes, appeals, and takedowns
Initial dispute
A dispute asks the claimant to review a Content ID claim. The claimant has 30 days to respond. Dispute only when you have a valid basis; giving credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize does not establish one. YouTube Help: Dispute a Content ID claim.
Appeal
If the claimant rejects your initial dispute, Studio may offer an appeal. For eligible blocked videos, YouTube may instead offer Escalate to Appeal, which skips the initial dispute stage. The claimant has seven days to respond to an appeal. If an appeal is rejected, the claimant may submit a copyright removal request, which can lead to removal and a strike if valid. Copyright removal request and counter notification
A removal request is a legal takedown process, distinct from a Content ID claim. YouTube may give seven days to act on a scheduled removal request before the content is removed and a strike is applied. A counter notification is a legal request to reinstate content removed after a removal request—not a way to contest a territorial Content ID block. After YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content down. YouTube shares the counter notification with the claimant, so consider the personal information involved and do not submit inaccurate information. When the usual claim options are missing
Some videos may be blocked under contractual obligations rather than through a standard Content ID claim. YouTube says such restrictions may not offer Content ID appeal or counter-notification processes. Use the options actually shown for the video in Studio; do not assume that another claim’s workflow applies. YouTube Help: Restrictions on videos.

Keep future documentary streams safer
Before broadcasting a documentary, check that you have rights for every element in the program—not just the main footage. This can include music, archive clips, photographs, narration, and material supplied by guests or contributors. Confirm that permissions cover live use, the intended territories, and any archived replay. If a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether your channel needs to be allowlisted before the stream.
