For a graphical Linux setup, start with OBS Studio’s Media Source and turn on Loop for a single video. For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source with Loop Playlist enabled and VLC installed. For a headless machine, mpv can loop playback indefinitely, but it does not by itself send a live stream to YouTube: you also need an encoder and streaming connection, commonly built with FFmpeg. There is no evidence-backed universal “lightest” winner or comparative 24/7 endurance result, so choose by workflow and test your own setup.

OBS’s source controls and Linux support are documented by the OBS Project. The mpv manual documents infinite looping; mpv’s project page describes it as a media player. VideoLAN describes VLC as a cross-platform media player and framework. These features support practical fit recommendations, not a controlled resource comparison.
Choose by file count and workflow
One video and a GUI: OBS Media Source
Add a Media Source in OBS, select the local video, and enable its Loop control. OBS handles playback and also provides the streaming controls needed for a graphical workflow. This is the clearest starting point if you want to see the source and stream status while operating the machine.
Several videos: OBS with VLC Video source
Use OBS’s VLC Video source for a local playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC that matches your OBS architecture; the OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC. This adds a dependency, but suits an ordered collection better than repeatedly loading one file.

Headless Linux: separate playback from streaming
mpv’s manual documents infinite looping, which makes it a candidate for command-line playback. A YouTube broadcast still needs an encoder/transport stage: FFmpeg is the relevant tool category for constructing that headless pipeline. Confirm that your actual source, codecs, output settings, and restart/monitoring plan work together. No tested FFmpeg command or controlled CPU/RAM comparison is established here, so a specific command should not be treated as a verified 24/7 recipe.
Local playback only
If you only need to repeat a file on the Linux machine and will not transmit it, VLC or mpv may be enough. For the title’s YouTube destination, playback is only one part of the workflow.
Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. With an encoder, provide YouTube’s server URL and stream key; a scheduled broadcast can be previewed in Live Control Room before it goes public. Keep the stream key private. - Check channel eligibility. Confirm verification and that no live-streaming restriction applies.
- Create or schedule the live event in YouTube Studio. Use Live Control Room to prepare the stream and obtain the encoder connection details.
- Configure the encoder. Enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then set the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current guidance and the encoder’s capabilities.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder and check the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its current general encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps. Follow the current codec-specific table rather than assuming settings transfer unchanged between codecs. YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings.

The following are YouTube’s current encoder-setting figures, accessed 2026: minimum and recommended bitrate for the specified codec, resolution, and frame rate. They are ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them.

Choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support with headroom, then test under realistic network conditions. If your connection cannot hold the selected bitrate, reduce the output settings rather than relying on a momentary speed-test result. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. YouTube’s encoder settings page contains the current table; check it again when configuring a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

Plan for long-stream archives and monitoring
A 24/7 broadcast has an important archive caveat: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are platform limits, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. If retaining a complete recording or rewind history matters, record a local archive and consider shorter sessions; confirm current YouTube behavior before relying on it. - Test with representative video and audio before committing to a long broadcast.
- Check the public preview and stream health, not just whether the local process is running.
- Monitor audio and video while live; a connected encoder can still have a bad feed.
- If recording locally, verify that the archive file is growing and that the storage location has room.
- For a headless setup, define how you will detect a stalled or exited process and restart it; do not assume playback software alone provides unattended recovery.

Common problems and what to check
OBS does not show the VLC Video source
Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture. The OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Reopen OBS after installation and check the source list again.

The video repeats locally but YouTube is offline
A looping player is not the full broadcast path. Confirm that an encoder is sending to the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and check Live Control Room for preview and stream-health status.
The stream drops frames or reports poor health
Compare the encoder’s codec-specific bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for your resolution and frame rate. Test sustained upload capacity, leave network headroom, and lower output settings if the connection cannot sustain the chosen rate.
A 24-hour stream has no complete archive or rewind
YouTube warns that broadcasts longer than 12 hours may not be captured and that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable beyond that duration. Use a local recording if retention is important, and plan sessions around the platform’s current limits.

Playback and encoding do not establish a restart or monitoring policy. Configure and test process supervision and alerts for your own Linux environment, then verify recovery rather than assuming the stream will resume automatically.
