Neither phone nor computer is universally better for YouTube Live. Use the mobile app for quick, on-location streams if your channel meets YouTube’s mobile eligibility rules; choose the webcam option for a straightforward stream from a computer; and use an encoder when you need screen sharing, gameplay, overlays, external equipment or a more involved production. Vertical versus horizontal format is a separate choice from which device you use.
Should I livestream from my phone or my computer?
Start with what you need viewers to see and where you will be. YouTube describes mobile streaming as suited to vlogging and quick updates, and webcam streaming as a quick way to go live from a computer. These direct routes are simpler than an encoder workflow, but they offer less production flexibility.
- Choose mobile for a stream from the scene or a quick update, provided your channel and device meet the mobile requirements.
- Choose webcam for a simple, fixed computer setup when you have a webcam.
- Choose an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, connected audio or video equipment, or production using multiple cameras or microphones.
YouTube says beginners do not need expensive equipment to start and recommends practicing with a test stream. There is no basis in YouTube’s guidance for saying one route inherently delivers better quality, reliability, reach or latency; those depend on the equipment, connection and production setup.

These are differences in workflow, not guarantees about results. For an encoder production, YouTube recommends preparing and checking the stream before an event and monitoring audio and video quality.

What do I need to live stream on YouTube from mobile?
YouTube’s mobile help page lists these requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and a supported device running Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. YouTube’s requirements can change, so check its current mobile live-streaming guidance before relying on the subscriber threshold or device versions.
- Check channel status: Verify your channel and confirm it has no live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days.
- Enable live streaming: If this is your first time, allow for YouTube’s stated wait of up to 24 hours for access to become available.
- Check mobile eligibility: Confirm your channel has at least 50 subscribers and your phone or tablet meets the listed operating-system requirement.
- Use the YouTube app: Start the mobile live workflow there, then test your setup before an important broadcast.
The 50-subscriber rule is specific to direct mobile live streaming; YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance separately lists channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the latest YouTube live-streaming requirements if your access differs from these instructions.

Is it better to go live on YouTube from a phone or a webcam?
If you want to show what is happening around you, a phone is the more natural fit. If you are presenting from a desk and want a simple computer-based route, use the webcam option; it requires a computer with a webcam. A USB webcam for YouTube live streaming is optional only if you do not already have a suitable webcam—YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin.
Use an encoder instead of either direct route when the stream needs more than a camera view, such as capturing your screen, broadcasting gameplay, adding overlays, or connecting microphones and cameras. Can I stream vertically and horizontally at the same time?
Yes. YouTube’s live-streaming guide describes creating horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together in Live Control Room by default. The vertical version is center-cropped unless you choose another layout, and the vertical layout can be adjusted in the editing canvas. YouTube says the vertical version may be discoverable in the Shorts feed; this is a format and discovery consideration, not a benefit exclusive to phone streaming.
YouTube’s feature comparison distinguishes the vertical live feed from horizontal streams. Its guide lists memberships and gifted memberships in both columns. It lists clickable links in chat or the channel description, live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls, 4K bitrate broadcast on the YouTube app, Premieres and Live Redirect for horizontal streams, but not for vertical live-feed streams. Using an encoder for dual streaming
If you use a third-party encoder for both formats, YouTube directs creators to choose RTMP(S), select the second stream key for the vertical stream, match the content and format to the corresponding keys, and start the stream from Studio. YouTube says you cannot add the vertical format after a stream has started, so set up both formats before going live.

A phone, webcam and encoder are approaches to a live production; keeping an uploaded video or playlist looping 24/7 is a different job. For the do-it-yourself route, an encoder and a computer must remain configured and running, with a stable connection and the correct YouTube stream key. Make sure you have the rights to stream every part of the recording: going live does not remove copyright obligations, and YouTube’s policies still apply to content you upload or broadcast.

Troubleshooting: why can’t I start my YouTube live stream?
- Mobile live is unavailable: Check the subscriber threshold, channel verification, recent live restrictions, live-stream enablement and device operating-system requirement on YouTube’s current mobile help page.
- First-time live access is still pending: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Wait for access to activate, then check Studio again.
- The webcam route is not available: Confirm you are using a computer with a webcam. If you need connected cameras or other external equipment, use an encoder workflow and configure the peripherals there.
- The vertical version is missing: Configure dual formats before starting. YouTube says a vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.
- Audio or video is not ready for an event: Test the stream beforehand and monitor audio and video quality during the production, as YouTube recommends.
