A Broken pipe error means FFmpeg could not write to its YouTube Live output connection; it does not identify why the connection failed. Check the FFmpeg messages immediately before the error and the event’s stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before changing encoder flags. The cause may be a local input or encoding fault, an unstable outbound connection, a bad RTMP/RTMPS destination or key, or a YouTube ingest issue.
What “Broken pipe” means in an FFmpeg YouTube stream
FFmpeg reports a broken pipe when writing to the output fails because the connection is no longer available. The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis: it does not tell you whether your network dropped, YouTube closed the connection, the destination was misconfigured, or an earlier media or encoder problem led to the stop.
Start with the earliest relevant error and its timestamp. A final message such as Error closing or Error writing trailer may appear after the connection has already failed; it is not necessarily the initial cause. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide distinguishes local encoder problems from outbound connectivity issues.
Work through the failure in this order
1. Preserve the command and the first failure
Before changing settings, save the full FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, the complete log around the first failure, your FFmpeg version and build, your operating system, and the input type. Note whether capture or playback continues locally and whether a local recording, if you are making one, is healthy. Keep the key private: do not post it in a public log or support request.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check YouTube Live Control Room
Open the correct event in YouTube Studio’s encoder setup and Live Control Room. Check whether YouTube is receiving data, then read the stream-health and configuration messages. The LiveStreams resource exposes stream status and health information; related health messages can flag audio or video configuration, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and stream consistency.
If YouTube reports no incoming data while your local output looks healthy, investigate the destination and network next. If its health panel identifies a media configuration problem, compare the actual output against the warning and YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

3. Verify the stream URL, key, and protocol
Confirm that FFmpeg is publishing to the current server URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube recommends generating a new stream key and updating the encoder. A key is sensitive credentials, so redact it when sharing the command.
For RTMPS, verify the full endpoint and path, the RTMPS scheme, port 443, and TLS configuration. In particular, TLS SNI must identify the server hostname. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance describes incorrect scheme, port, and TLS setup as possible causes of SSL or timeout symptoms. Do not substitute an endpoint based on guesswork; use the destination provided for your YouTube event.

4. Decide whether the failure is local or on the outbound path
Inspect the encoder preview and, if available, a local archive. If the local picture or sound is already wrong, look for earlier FFmpeg input, codec, muxing, or resource errors and check CPU load. If local output is healthy but YouTube is not receiving it, test outbound upload speed and stability, and check whether other people or applications are using the same connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice is to inspect encoder errors and CPU when local output is bad, and test the outbound internet connection when the encoder view is healthy.
Compare the actual outgoing bitrate with the connection’s usable upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; if primary and backup streams are sent simultaneously, count both before adding that headroom. Its streaming tips also warn that network disruption can break a stream. If you are on Wi-Fi, a test over a known-good wired connection can help isolate wireless instability, but a cable is not a universal fix.

5. Check media settings against current health guidance
Review the health panel and YouTube’s current recommendations for supported protocol and codecs, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and keyframe interval. A setting mismatch may produce a health warning even if it is not the cause of every broken-pipe stop. YouTube advises testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health; consult its live encoder settings page for current recommendations rather than relying on a remembered value.

Not as a universal fix for a failed RTMP publishing connection. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation lists options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_streamed, and network-error retry controls under HTTP protocol options. That does not make them generic reconnection switches for RTMP output.

The RTMP section separately documents tcp_keepalive, a basic TCP keepalive toggle that can help detect a dead peer on a long-lived idle connection. Keepalive does not guarantee that FFmpeg will reconnect or resume a stream after an RTMP write fails. Check which protocol your output uses and the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build before adding flags.
If your workflow needs process recovery, use a tested supervisor or an output architecture appropriate to your FFmpeg build, and verify it on an unlisted or test event first. A restarted process may need to re-establish the YouTube event; restarting does not guarantee uninterrupted continuity. Avoid deploying an untested one-line “auto-reconnect” command on an important broadcast.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Local preview or recording is already faulty | Input, capture, encoder, or local resource problem | Read errors before the broken pipe, inspect CPU load and media settings, and confirm the source is producing valid audio and video. |
| Local output looks healthy, but YouTube receives no data | Outbound network, endpoint, key, or ingest connection | Check the event’s destination and key, YouTube’s ingest status, upload stability, and whether other traffic shares the connection. |
| Failure follows an RTMPS or TLS error | Endpoint, scheme, port, or TLS hostname/SNI | Use the event’s current RTMPS destination; confirm port 443 and hostname-based SNI. |
| YouTube receives data but reports a health/configuration warning | Codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, or stream consistency | Match the specific warning against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and test before the event. |
| Failure is intermittent and coincides with connection changes | Unstable network path or insufficient upload headroom | Check competing traffic and compare a stable wired path with Wi-Fi; budget 20% above total bitrate, including both feeds if primary and backup are sent. |
