Views are not the same as unique viewers; peak viewers are not the average audience; and “engagement” is not one universal number. Record the platform, its metric labels, the stream and date range, and whether each figure came from a live dashboard or a processed report.
Which live stream metrics should you track?
Choose metrics that answer distinct questions rather than combining them into an undefined performance score.

How to interpret views and unique viewers
A view is a counted viewing event under a platform’s rules; it does not necessarily represent a distinct person. Unique viewers aim to count distinct people, but definitions and reporting windows vary. YouTube Live Control Room’s real-time “Views” counts the number of times a stream was viewed while live. Twitch Channel Analytics reports live views and unique viewers, and counts a viewer who watched multiple streams once in the unique-viewer calculation for the selected date range.
Use the platform’s own label and state the period. Do not treat views as people, or compare one service’s counts with another’s as if their counting rules were identical. For YouTube, distinguish live dashboard views from views in a post-stream report or API report; report context affects what a views figure represents.

How to measure watch time and viewing duration
Total watch time is the combined time the event was played across views. Average view duration is the estimated average time watched per view for a live stream, as defined by the platform report. These measures answer different questions: total watch time captures aggregate attention and tends to increase with both audience size and viewing duration, while average view duration helps distinguish many brief visits from fewer longer sessions.
Keep the units and report context with the figure. YouTube’s Analytics API defines estimatedMinutesWatched as minutes watched for the selected channel, content owner, video, or playlist, and averageViewDuration as average playback length in seconds. Its glossary cautions that views can mean different things in different report types. YouTube Help describes total watch time as the total time the event was played across all views: See your live stream’s metrics. API metric definitions are in YouTube Analytics and Reporting API metrics.

How to read average and peak concurrent viewers
Concurrent viewers are people watching at the same time. Peak concurrent viewers is the highest simultaneous audience reached during the event; average concurrent viewers describes the average simultaneous audience. Peak is a moment, not a substitute for the average or a description of the audience throughout the stream.
When reporting audience size, include both average and peak if available. Twitch Creator Camp defines average viewers as average concurrent viewership. Twitch Analytics also reports maximum viewers. How to report engagement without inventing a single score
“Engagement” has no universal cross-platform formula in the reviewed platform documentation. Report the actions the platform actually measures: for example, likes, chat rate, or reactions on YouTube, and unique chatters or chat messages on Twitch. YouTube Analytics also documents likes and comments. Subscriber changes may be useful context where the report provides them, but identify the exact measure and reporting period.
If you calculate a rate, name the numerator, denominator, platform, and period. For example, a likes-per-view rate must say which likes count, which view metric is used, and what time window each covers. Do not label a custom calculation as a standard platform engagement rate.

Why live dashboards and post-stream reports may differ
YouTube says post-stream Analytics is based on video ID and processed, including despam processing; it measures different information from Live Control Room. A live dashboard figure and a later processed report therefore may not match exactly. YouTube says post-stream metrics are available within minutes after a stream ends, while some views and breakdowns have special timing or format conditions. Its Help documentation describes separate vertical-stream metrics after 24 hours.
For a reliable performance log, capture the stream or video ID, platform, date and time zone, reporting window, source (live dashboard or post-stream report), and retrieval time. Twitch Channel Analytics uses the selected date range, and its unique viewers are deduplicated across that range. Do not compare that multi-stream total with a single-event figure.

A practical reporting template
Use a sentence that keeps definitions and time windows attached to each number:
During [platform] stream [title/ID] on [date and time zone], the stream recorded [views/live views] and [unique viewers, if available]. Average concurrent viewers were [number], with a peak of [number]. Total watch time was [duration], and average view duration was [duration]. Interaction included [chat messages/unique chatters/likes/reactions]. These values come from [live dashboard or post-stream report] for [reporting window]; platform definitions apply.
For a custom rate, add the formula and its observation period rather than presenting it as a platform-defined metric.
