For a fixed prerecorded feed, FFmpeg is usually the simpler Linux choice: its -stream_loop -1 option loops an input indefinitely, and you can run it under a process supervisor. Choose OBS when you need to build and operate a visual scene with multiple sources, overlays, previews, or hands-on controls. Neither program by itself guarantees a 24/7 stream; the media, encoder host, network, process recovery, and YouTube broadcast state all matter.
If you would rather not maintain a Linux host, StreamNeo is a cloud option for prerecorded YouTube streams: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its stream runs from the cloud while your computer is off. See StreamNeo.
Which should you choose?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Loop one or more prerecorded files with a repeatable, scriptable pipeline | FFmpeg | Its documented -stream_loop -1 input option repeats a file indefinitely. You can supervise the process as a service and define encoding in a command. |
| Compose scenes from several media, image, text, or audio sources; adjust them visually | OBS | OBS provides a visual production interface, previews, and scene controls. It also documents reconnect support for supported outputs. |
| Keep a prerecorded feed running without leaving a computer at home | StreamNeo | It runs from the cloud, plays uploaded videos to YouTube, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot; the first day is free. |
This is a workflow-based recommendation, not a comparative uptime test. OBS and FFmpeg are encoders; neither removes the need to monitor the host, network, media, and YouTube event.
What YouTube needs from either encoder
YouTube’s encoder settings documentation lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, with H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video encoding options. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Supported audio options include AAC and MP3.

Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together
Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than choosing a bitrate in isolation. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The page provides separate recommendations for other combinations and recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default.
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Linux machine or connection can sustain the output. If you set resolution or frame rate manually, make sure the source, encoder output, and available upload bandwidth can support it consistently.
Prepare the YouTube stream key
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming output settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a command transcript, screenshot, or repository. YouTube’s scheduled workflow calls for sending the encoder feed and then clicking Go Live after the preview appears; scheduling alone does not mean the broadcast is live.

Run a prerecorded feed with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a good fit when the production is mostly a file or repeatable playlist and you are comfortable managing a command-line process. The key option is -stream_loop -1; it is an input option, so place it before the relevant -i. The FFmpeg manual defines -1 as infinite looping.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Basic single-file command pattern
A typical command structure is shown below. Replace the placeholders with your actual file, YouTube RTMPS ingest URL, and stream key, and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and codecs:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "recording.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative 1080p30 H.264/AAC pattern, not a universal production command. The 10 Mbps video bitrate follows YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation; the example uses a 2-second GOP at 30 fps. Check your file’s frame rate, dimensions, audio, FFmpeg build, and YouTube’s current settings before using it. For another resolution, frame rate, or codec, adjust the output and bitrate to match YouTube’s table. If the input already has suitable codecs and parameters, stream-copy may be possible, but only when its format and timestamps work with the ingest path.

Loop boundaries and playlists
Test the point where the file ends and restarts. A hard cut, black frame, silence, timestamp discontinuity, or incompatible audio transition can be visible or audible even though the loop itself works. FFmpeg’s infinite input loop is for repeating an input; for a changing playlist, create and test an explicit playlist or concat workflow rather than assuming multiple files will transition cleanly.
Keep the process supervised
Run FFmpeg under a service manager or another process supervisor so it can be restarted after a process exit, and arrange independent monitoring for the host, network, and output. A restarted encoder may still need operator attention in YouTube Studio: a process restart is not proof that the same broadcast event is active or that viewers can watch it. Protect the stream key in service configuration and logs.

Run a prerecorded feed with OBS
Choose OBS when you need a visual production rather than a simple file loop—for example, a documentary feed with a branded slate, overlays, or several sources. Add media as sources, arrange them in scenes, preview the output, and configure the streaming service with YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Set the output encoder, resolution, frame rate, rate control, bitrate, audio codec, and keyframe interval to meet YouTube’s current ingest guidance.

Configure reconnect and test real load
OBS documents reconnect support for supported outputs. Its output reference describes a retry interval that doubles on each attempt to avoid overloading services, with a maximum retry count and starting interval available in its output settings/API. Reconnect can restore a dropped connection; it does not guarantee the host survives a failure or that YouTube continues the same watchable event.
On Linux, OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland among its platform requirements. OBS also cautions that CPU demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and that meeting compatibility requirements does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. Test the actual scene and encode for sustained operation on the machine you plan to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan the broadcast as well as the encoder
YouTube distinguishes the encoder connection from the viewer-facing event. In its API, a liveStream resource represents encoder transmission settings; a liveBroadcast represents an individual watchable event. That distinction matters if you want an always-on feed and separate event videos, such as an interview that begins and ends while the feed continues. More advanced workflows can use the API to manage those resources.

For scheduled streams, YouTube’s documented workflow lets viewers receive reminders, but the operator still previews the incoming encoder feed and clicks Go Live. To end a stream, stop sending content. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise an automatic archive for a continuous stream longer than 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, plan recording and archive handling separately rather than relying on a long-running live event to produce one complete VOD.
Check YouTube’s current live-stream rules and your rights to every video, soundtrack, image, and other included material before broadcasting. Permission to upload a documentary does not necessarily include permission to rebroadcast it continuously or to use its music. YouTube may interrupt or restrict content that violates its policies or rights; looping a file does not change those obligations.
Common problems and what to check
- FFmpeg exits instead of looping: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant-i, inspect the process output for decode or muxing errors, and verify the source file can be read repeatedly. - YouTube reports an unstable or missing stream: Check sustained upload capacity, encoder output settings, ingest URL, stream key, and whether the selected codec and bitrate match YouTube’s guidance. Test RTMPS if your workflow permits it.
- The stream disconnects and does not return: Confirm the encoder’s reconnect behavior and retry limits, then check whether the encoder process or host failed. Reconnection cannot repair a crashed host or guarantee the broadcast event remains active.
- The video or audio stutters: Check whether the host can sustain the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; inspect source media and upload stability. Reduce workload or use an appropriate hardware encoder only after verifying that the output remains compatible with YouTube’s settings.
- The loop has a gap or glitch: Inspect the file’s final and opening frames, audio transitions, and timestamps. Re-encode or edit the source if needed, then test the transition during a private or otherwise controlled stream.
- The live stream is missing or ends unexpectedly in Studio: Check the scheduled event state, preview, and whether Go Live was clicked when required. A running encoder and a live viewer-facing broadcast are related but distinct states.
- A long session has no complete replay: Do not assume YouTube will automatically archive a stream lasting 12 hours or more. Record locally or make a separate archive plan if a full replay is required.
What does a self-hosted setup cost?
With OBS or FFmpeg, the software choice is only part of the cost. A dedicated Linux host must stay powered, connected, and capable of encoding the chosen media. CPU and GPU needs depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and—for OBS—the scene. A Linux mini PC or small-form-factor computer may be a suitable category to investigate, but no particular model or hardware tier is established here. Compare the current OBS requirements with the actual workload and test before depending on the machine for continuous operation.
You can also compare that ongoing hardware and electricity burden with a managed cloud workflow. YouTube’s verified encoder list includes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming; YouTube notes listed products are not made by YouTube. Availability and features should be checked with the provider.
