Its nearest official H.264 recommendations are 14 Mbps at 30 fps and 17 Mbps at 60 fps; for AV1 or H.265, they are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. Treat those as reference points, not an official 50 fps setting. Test your chosen bitrate with your encoder and connection, then check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
What bitrate should you use for 1080p 50fps?
There is no exact 1080p50 row in YouTube’s live encoder table. The closest figures are for 1080p30 and 1080p60, and YouTube varies its recommendations by codec as well as resolution and frame rate. The table below reproduces the listed minimum and recommended values; it does not interpolate a 50 fps figure.
| Live video format | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s live encoder recommendations, verified against its official guidance on October 3, 2026; that page does not display a publication or update year. For 1080p50, use the adjacent rows to choose a sensible starting point for the codec you actually send, then validate it in a representative test. Do not describe an interpolated value as YouTube’s recommendation.
Why a video loop does not have a separate bitrate recommendation
YouTube’s live table is organized around ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate; it does not specify a different bitrate for looped footage or static visuals. A mostly still documentary image may be easier for an encoder to compress than fast motion, but the published table does not establish a special lower target for loops. Keep the output format and quality you intend to use, and test with representative movement and audio rather than relying on the content being a loop.

Set the encoder for a reliable YouTube live stream
Choose the codec and transport
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for live encoding, with RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols; it recommends RTMPS. Use a codec and protocol supported by your encoder and stream setup. Because the recommended bitrate differs by codec, confirm which codec is being sent before selecting a value from the table.
Use constant bitrate and a short keyframe interval
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s live guidance lists up to 60 fps, so 50 fps is within that listed maximum.
- SDR color: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth are listed in YouTube’s advanced settings.
Match the bitrate to the upload connection
A bitrate that is too high for the available upload capacity can make the stream unstable. YouTube does not give a fixed upload-headroom percentage in this guidance. Run a speed test on the connection you will use, test the stream at the intended settings, and watch the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. If the stream reports trouble, reduce the bitrate and test again rather than assuming a particular margin will work everywhere.

Test a 1080p50 loop before relying on it
- Set the actual output format. Configure the intended 1080p resolution, 50 fps, codec, CBR mode, and two-second keyframe interval. Start near the appropriate adjacent bitrate recommendations above; do not label a guessed 50 fps number as official.
- Check the connection. Test upload speed from the same location and connection planned for the stream. A speed-test result is a check, not proof that a long-running stream will remain healthy.
- Run a representative preflight. Include the loop’s real audio and movement. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to what the stream will contain.
- Inspect stream health. In YouTube Live Control Room, monitor stream health and review messages while the test runs. If you see instability, lower the video bitrate and repeat the test.
- Recheck after changes. A codec switch, different network, resolution or frame rate can change the conditions. Test again before relying on the stream for a long session.
Do not confuse live bitrate with upload encoding
YouTube’s separate prerecorded-video upload guidance includes recommendations for high-frame-rate uploads and confirms that 50 fps is a common upload frame rate. Those upload settings are not live-ingest targets, so they do not fill the missing 1080p50 row in the live bitrate table. Use the live encoder guidance for a live broadcast.
Troubleshooting common bitrate problems
The stream is unstable or stream health shows an issue
Possible causes include an upload connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate or settings that have not been tested under realistic conditions. Run a speed test, lower the bitrate, and repeat a preflight with representative audio and movement. Continue monitoring stream health and messages during the event.

The selected value came from the upload page
Upload encoding guidance covers prerecorded video, not live ingest. Return to the live table, choose the row for your codec and nearest listed frame rate, and test a suitable starting point for 50 fps.
The encoder rejects the configuration or output looks wrong
Confirm that the selected codec and protocol are supported by the encoder and the ingest setup, that bitrate mode is CBR, and that the keyframe interval does not exceed four seconds. Recheck the configured resolution and frame rate against the stream output, then run another test.
