Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst check which OBS counter is rising. If it is Dropped Frames (Network), lower your video bitrate and troubleshoot the connection to YouTube. If it is Rendering Lag or Encoding Lag, reduce the work OBS and your captured app are doing. These are different problems, and changing the wrong settings may not help.
Identify which OBS statistic is increasing
OBS uses “dropped frames” for a connection to the remote streaming server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Rendering lag and encoding lag instead indicate that the computer is struggling to prepare or encode frames. OBS is the encoder and sender; YouTube is the ingest server.
- Dropped Frames (Network): investigate bitrate, upload stability, the route to YouTube, and network software or hardware.
- Rendering Lag: OBS cannot render frames on time, often because the GPU is busy with the captured application or a complex scene.
- Encoding Lag: the selected encoder or system cannot encode frames quickly enough at the chosen output settings.
Open OBS’s Stats panel to monitor these counters and its connection indicator while reproducing the problem. Viewer reports of buffering alone do not prove OBS is dropping frames; buffering can occur on the viewer’s connection or device even when OBS reports a stable stream.
If the network dropped-frame counter is rising
Lower bitrate to match sustained upload
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends these bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the selected bitrate. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed when troubleshooting, but treat that as a starting heuristic, not a promise: use sustained real-world upload capacity, allow headroom for variation and audio, and reduce the bitrate if the connection still drops frames. You do not have to use YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate if your uplink cannot carry it reliably.
Check the ingest route and local network
- Try another YouTube ingest server in OBS’s stream settings, then test again. If you use a custom server selection, return to the default if needed.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test wired Ethernet between the streaming computer and router where practical. A cable can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but will not fix ISP congestion or a poor route to YouTube. If you need one for this test, a Cat 6 cable is a reasonable option; it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check network interference: temporarily test without a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization/“optimization” utilities. OBS lists examples such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software; they are examples, not a complete list.
- Check drivers and connectivity: update or reinstall an old network driver if appropriate, and verify modem/router stability. Do not assume a new router is needed without evidence.
Windows network options in OBS
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests testing Network Optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows. Leave Bind to IP at Default. If problems persist, try IPv4 Only; if it does not help, restore IPv4/IPv6 rather than leaving a change that made no difference.

Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment is another possible fallback if the root connection issue cannot be resolved. It lowers bitrate during congestion, which can reduce picture quality. It mitigates interruptions; it does not repair the network cause.
If rendering lag or encoding lag is rising
- Reduce Output Resolution in OBS’s output settings and test. Lowering from 4K can substantially reduce the amount of work, though it changes the delivered resolution.
- Lower the frame rate from 60 fps; OBS says trying 30 fps is reasonable when 60 fps is not working. This reduces work but also changes motion smoothness.
- Simplify scenes by disabling unnecessary sources, filters, or animated elements, then check whether the lag counter improves.
- Free GPU capacity: reduce load in the game or application being captured so OBS has resources to render and encode. A captured application that consumes the GPU can cause OBS performance problems even if the network is stable.
Reducing Base (Canvas) Resolution is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning. OBS does not generally recommend it unless GPU resources are severely constrained. NVENC options depend on OBS version and GPU generation, so there is no safe universal preset to prescribe without knowing the machine and workload. Avoid forcing advanced encoder options as a generic fix.

Use compatible YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Codec choice affects the recommended 4K60 bitrate: YouTube lists 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265. HDR has separate constraints: YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR. For SDR, its guidance lists Rec. 709. Use only an encoder and codec supported by your installed OBS version, hardware, and YouTube workflow.

For a 4K stream, YouTube’s cited guidance says the “improve for low latency” option is unavailable and 4K/2160p streams use normal latency. Do not look for a local OBS setting to force that YouTube mode for 4K.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before relying on the stream
- Make one relevant change at a time so you can tell whether it helped.
- Run a test stream with representative audio and motion, not just a static screen.
- Watch OBS’s network, rendering, and encoding statistics and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
- If the issue continues, keep the OBS log and note the Stats panel, output and encoder settings, computer hardware, OBS version, and measured sustained upload. Without those details, an exact machine-specific cause cannot be identified.
YouTube advises testing before starting a live stream. Lowering bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or quality may also help viewers with slower connections or devices; that is a separate issue from OBS’s network dropped-frame counter.
