To stream sermon recordings stored on a church NAS, connect a computer to the church network, add the files to an OBS Studio VLC Video playlist, and send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live stream. The computer must keep access to the NAS files and remain on for playback. Test the playlist, audio, video, network, and YouTube preview before the service.
What you need
- A computer on the church network that can access the NAS share.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed on that computer. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; match their architectures, such as 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS Project’s Media Sources guide explains the available media sources and playlist controls.
- The sermon video files, tested on the computer that will stream them. Supported formats and playback depend on the installed software and codecs.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and key for the stream you will use. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. See YouTube Help’s encoder setup guide.
- A network connection with enough reliable upload capacity for the chosen stream settings. Test it rather than assuming a connection will be adequate. YouTube’s streaming tips cover preparation and stream health.
Build the playlist and connect it to YouTube
-
Make the NAS share available to the streaming computer
Connect the computer to the church network and use your operating system’s normal method to mount or map the NAS share. Then add the media files from that accessible location. The precise mount and authentication steps depend on the NAS vendor, firmware, and operating system; OBS’s playlist instructions do not specify them. Do not expose the NAS share publicly just to make the files accessible. Keep the computer able to reach the share during playback.
-
Add a VLC Video source in OBS
In your OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and add the sermon files in the intended order. Use a VLC playlist when you need multiple files to play sequentially; OBS’s basic Media Source is intended for an individual media file. Set shuffle off for a fixed service order, and choose whether the list should loop. VLC must be installed for the source to appear. The OBS Media Sources guide describes these source options and controls.
-
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Set its title, other details, and privacy as needed. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated activation delay of up to 24 hours. For stream creation and scheduling, see YouTube Help; for stream settings and keys, see Manage live stream settings.

-
Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in OBS
Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s streaming settings. The key is a credential: it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. YouTube explains keys and stream URLs in its live stream settings guide.
-
Start early, check the preview, and go live
Start the encoder with enough time before the service to verify that the YouTube preview appears, the playlist advances in the intended order, and both sound and picture are present. Test the network and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Follow Studio’s prompts for ending the broadcast, then stop the encoder as appropriate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and checking stream health.

Choose the right playback source and network setup
One file or an ordered sequence
Use OBS’s Media Source for an individual media file. Use VLC Video when the service requires several files in sequence, playlist controls, or a looping list. For a fixed service order, keep shuffle off. The VLC option depends on VLC being installed and correctly matched to OBS’s architecture. OBS Project documents these distinctions.
NAS access and network reliability
The NAS connection and the internet upload path serve different purposes: the computer needs access to the files while playing them, and its network connection must reliably send the encoded stream to YouTube. Test the actual setup and stream health. A wired Ethernet connection may suit a church where Wi-Fi is unreliable and the router and computer can be connected conveniently; it is not a universal requirement. YouTube recommends testing network capacity rather than prescribing one connection type for every setup.

Test the content and broadcast rights
Before the service, play the actual files through the OBS scene and confirm the order, image, and audio on the streaming computer and in YouTube’s preview. A file working in another player does not prove that it will play correctly through the installed OBS, VLC, and codec setup.
Confirm that the church has permission to broadcast each recording and any music, slides, or other material included in it. The technical setup does not establish those rights. A playlist playing successfully is not confirmation that its contents are cleared for streaming.

Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC, then make sure its architecture matches OBS (for example, both 64-bit). Reopen OBS and check the source list.
- A file will not play or has no sound: Test that exact file through the VLC Video source on the streaming computer. Playback depends on the installed software and codecs; check the file and its audio in the actual scene before the service.
- The list plays in the wrong order or repeats unexpectedly: Review the playlist order, turn shuffle off for a fixed sequence, and check the loop setting.
- The NAS files are unavailable during streaming: Check that the computer remains connected to the church network and that the share is still mounted or mapped with valid access. Resolve the NAS connection locally rather than exposing the share publicly.
- YouTube does not show the encoder preview: Check that the stream is created or scheduled, the stream URL and key in OBS match the active YouTube stream, and the encoder is sending. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
- The preview appears unstable or stream health is poor: Test the network and upload capacity at the chosen stream settings, then review YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Consider a wired connection only where the church’s layout and network make it practical.
- Live streaming is not enabled yet: For a first-time live stream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance rather than waiting until the service.
