Use OBS Media Source to loop one local product-demo video; use VLC Video when you want several clips in a playlist. The first is simpler and its Loop option is off by default. VLC Video can preserve a playlist order and loops the playlist by default, but it requires VLC to be installed. Either source handles playback inside an OBS scene; YouTube’s live-stream encoder setup is a separate step.
Which OBS source should you use?
| Decision | Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | One local video file | A playlist of files |
| Loop behavior | Enable Loop to replay the file; off by default | Loop Playlist restarts the list; on by default in OBS’s documentation |
| Ordering | One file | Playlist order is preserved by default; Shuffle Playlist is off by default |
| Dependency | No separate VLC installation specified | VLC must be installed. OBS’s documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Visibility behavior | Restart playback when source becomes active defaults on; close file when inactive defaults off | Defaults to stopping when not visible and restarting when visible |
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux | Windows, macOS, Linux, with VLC installed |
These source options and defaults are described in the OBS Media Sources documentation dated January 11, 2022; OBS does not identify a specific release in that page. Labels or behavior may differ in later versions, so check the properties shown in your installed OBS. OBS Media Sources
How do I loop one video in OBS?
- Choose a scene. In OBS, select an existing scene or create one for the demo.
- Add the clip. In the Sources panel, click the add button and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one, then choose the local video file in its properties.
- Turn on looping. In Media Source properties, enable Loop. This setting repeats the file after playback ends; it is off by default.
- Set activation behavior. Decide whether Restart playback when source becomes active suits your scene changes. It defaults on. Close file when inactive defaults off.
- Fit it into the scene. Position and size the source in the preview. Check that text, logos, or other sources do not cover important parts of the demonstration. OBS scenes combine sources, and source order affects what appears on top. OBS Sources Guide
How do I loop a playlist in OBS?
- Install VLC if needed. Add the VLC Video source in OBS. If VLC is missing, install it; OBS documents Windows, macOS, and Linux support and specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the videos. In VLC Video source properties, add the files to the playlist in the order you want them played.
- Choose order or shuffle. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. It defaults off.
- Loop the list. Enable Loop Playlist if it is not already enabled. OBS’s documentation says playlist looping is on by default.
- Check visibility behavior and layout. The VLC Video source defaults to stopping when it is not visible and restarting when visible. Place and size it in the scene, then verify the demo remains unobstructed.
OBS describes VLC Video as the source that lets you create a playlist, unlike Media Source. OBS Media Sources
Looping the source is not the same as going live
Media Source and VLC Video determine how OBS plays local media. OBS then composes the scene output, while its encoder sends that output to YouTube Live. Configure the YouTube stream and encoder separately; adding a looping source does not start a live stream or configure a stream key.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, set up the stream and obtain the stream information needed by your encoder.
- In OBS, configure the stream destination and key in its streaming settings, then select the intended encoder output settings.
- Start a test and confirm the video, audio, and stream health before relying on the live broadcast. YouTube says its Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into viewer formats. It recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health during it. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Bitrate and keyframe guidance
The figures below are YouTube recommendations for H.264, not universal minimum connection requirements. YouTube advises choosing settings your actual upload connection can sustain; test the connection and the stream with representative video and audio.
| Output target | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube-stated minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of 4 seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS encoder audio, it lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees that a given upload connection will be reliable. YouTube encoder guidance

Check live eligibility and rights before broadcasting
- Channel eligibility: YouTube’s current live-stream overview says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. Platform requirements can change; check YouTube’s current page before scheduling. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Content rules: YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and may restrict live streaming. Make sure you have permission for all video, music, voice, and other material in the demo to be broadcast. YouTube live-stream overview
- Test representative material: Play the actual demo and audio through OBS before going live; a successful source preview alone does not establish that the YouTube stream is healthy.
Troubleshooting OBS loops and playlists
The single clip stops at the end
Open Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. The option defaults off.
The VLC Video source is missing or fails to load
Install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS and check the Sources add menu. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as OBS specifies. The documentation does not give a current release-specific compatibility matrix, so check the installed versions if the source remains unavailable.

The playlist plays in the wrong order or changes order
Review the playlist order in VLC Video properties. Turn off Shuffle Playlist for a fixed sequence; that option defaults off.
The media restarts when you switch scenes
Check the source’s visibility settings. Media Source has Restart playback when source becomes active enabled by default. VLC Video defaults to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Adjust these options to match whether the demo should resume or start over when its source becomes active.

YouTube reports stream health or connection problems
Check the encoder configuration and use a bitrate your upload can sustain. Run a speed test, test with representative video and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is not a substitute for a reliable connection.
