To stream a pre-recorded 1080×1920 video vertically on YouTube Live, send a portrait 9:16 feed that preserves the full composition, then inspect YouTube’s vertical preview before starting the event. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate guided by YouTube’s 1080p recommendations for your codec and frame rate; YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate row for portrait 1080×1920 input.
Choose how YouTube gets the vertical picture
YouTube supports a vertical Live experience for mobile, and viewers can discover vertical streams in the Shorts feed. Merely sending a 1080×1920 image does not guarantee placement in that experience: use the appropriate Live Control Room or encoder workflow and check the vertical preview. Some live and fan-funding features depend on channel eligibility. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Use a horizontal feed and let Live Control Room create the vertical view
Live Control Room’s default dual-stream behavior can derive a vertical view from a horizontal stream. Its layout choices include center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. This may work when the horizontal image can be reframed, but a center crop can cut off material deliberately composed for portrait—such as faces, captions, or documentary graphics near the edges. Inspect the vertical preview and choose a layout that keeps essential content visible.
Send a separately composed portrait feed
If your recording is already composed as 1080×1920, sending a purpose-built vertical feed avoids relying on a crop of a horizontal master. For simultaneous horizontal and vertical versions, YouTube documents an Encoder/RTMP(S) dual-stream workflow: select the second stream key for the vertical feed and map each output to its corresponding key. Confirm the format-to-key mapping in the encoder. See YouTube’s dual-stream instructions.

Recommended encoder settings for 1080×1920
Keep the source’s 9:16 framing in the output. YouTube says Live Control Room detects resolution and frame rate automatically; its published bitrate table is organized by resolution, frame rate, and codec, not portrait orientation. Treat the following 1080p rates as YouTube’s guidance for the relevant codec and frame rate—not as a portrait-specific mandate or a guarantee of quality. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Setting | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Orientation and frame | Portrait 9:16; preserve the full 1080×1920 composition. |
| Bitrate mode | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps; match the recording’s frame rate where practical. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are included in YouTube’s guidance. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; YouTube’s stereo guidance lists 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. |
| Transport | RTMP(S); YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP. |
1080p bitrate reference
| Frame rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 30 fps | 10 Mbps recommended by YouTube | 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube |
| 60 fps | 12 Mbps recommended by YouTube | 17 Mbps recommended by YouTube |
These are YouTube’s recommended 1080p rates by codec and frame rate, not separate requirements for a 1080×1920 portrait stream. Choose a rate your upload connection can sustain steadily; a nominally higher rate is not useful if the connection cannot hold it. For the complete codec and resolution guidance, use YouTube’s encoder settings page.

Create and start the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the stream. In Live Control Room, create an encoder stream or schedule one. Scheduling can provide time to promote the event and let viewers set reminders. Follow the current flow in YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Choose the vertical delivery method. For a horizontal source that YouTube will adapt, review the vertical layout canvas and select center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked. For separate horizontal and portrait outputs from an encoder, select the documented dual-stream option and assign the vertical output to its second stream key.
- Set the encoder output. Set portrait output to 1080×1920, use the source frame rate where practical, and apply the CBR, keyframe, codec, audio, and bitrate guidance above. Confirm that each dual-stream output is associated with its matching key.
- Copy the connection details. From Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to your event.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check the vertical preview for framing, captions, graphics, and audio before starting the event. Test in advance and monitor stream health during the broadcast; YouTube recommends testing and previewing the encoder setup. See YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
- Start the event in Studio. Once the preview and stream health look right, start the live event in Live Control Room. When finished, end the stream in Studio and stop sending from the encoder according to the workflow.
YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours. For current event and archive behavior, consult YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
Check the recording and channel before broadcast
Prepare the portrait video
- Keep the important image, titles, subtitles, and documentary context within the 9:16 frame; do not assume a landscape crop will preserve them.
- Check the full recording, not just its opening, for blank sections, unexpected aspect-ratio changes, audio gaps, and credits or graphics that may be hard to read on a phone.
- Listen to the encoder preview for audio presence and synchronization before starting the public event.
Review rights and YouTube rules
Being pre-recorded does not exempt a Live broadcast from copyright rules. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, archival footage, and other material before streaming. If you plan to monetize, review YouTube’s channel monetization policies as well: permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. YouTube’s cited encoder setup guidance does not establish every channel eligibility condition, so check current Studio notices and YouTube Help for your account.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait preview cuts off faces, captions, or graphics | The vertical view is being derived from a landscape feed, or the selected crop is unsuitable. | Inspect the vertical canvas; try fit to phone width or stacked, or send a separately composed portrait output using the vertical stream key. |
| YouTube receives the wrong orientation or format | The output may be mapped to the wrong stream key, or the encoder may be sending an unexpected canvas. | Confirm the vertical output is 1080×1920 and assigned to the second key in the dual-stream workflow; check each feed against its matching key. |
| Stream health reports unstable delivery | The selected bitrate may exceed what the upload connection can sustain consistently. | Use a stable CBR setting aligned with YouTube’s codec/frame-rate guidance and test the connection before the event. |
| Preview does not appear or the event does not receive video | The encoder may not be sending, or its stream URL/key may not match the event. | Recheck the URL and key copied from the correct Live Control Room event, start the encoder, and wait for the incoming preview. |
| Video arrives but audio is absent or unsuitable | The encoder’s audio output may be disabled or configured incompatibly. | Check that audio is enabled and encoded as AAC or MP3; verify audible, synchronized sound in preview. |
