YouTube Live can show a lower resolution because it is reporting what it detected from OBS at ingest, or because a viewer is watching a lower-quality playback rendition. Those are different things: YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple formats for viewers, so a lower option in the playback menu does not by itself mean OBS sent a lower-resolution source.
First determine where the lower resolution appears
Compare three checkpoints: OBS’s actual encoder output, the resolution and frame rate YouTube reports for the incoming stream, and the quality selected in the viewer’s playback menu.
- Lower in YouTube’s ingest information: investigate OBS output settings, the stream key’s manual-resolution setting, and stream-health messages.
- Lower only in playback: the viewer may be receiving a rendition YouTube created for that device or network. Test the quality menu on another capable device or network before changing OBS.
YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. OBS likewise explains that YouTube transcodes streams, including the source feed. A playback rendition is therefore not interchangeable with the ingest resolution. YouTube’s encoder guidance and the OBS explanation of transcoding describe these separate stages.
Check what OBS is encoding
Do not use the scene canvas or source dimensions as proof of the resolution being sent. Compare OBS’s configured output/encoder resolution with the resolution YouTube reports at ingest. The relevant value is the encoded stream output, not simply the size of a source placed in the scene.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS menu labels can vary by version, so use the output/encoder resolution shown in your installed version rather than assuming a universal menu path. If the encoder output is below your target, correct that setting and run a test stream before the event.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream key
YouTube automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. If you use a custom stream key, however, its manual-resolution setting can override automatic detection. Review the selected key and its settings in YouTube Studio; YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream keys and stream URLs.

Compare YouTube’s detected ingest resolution and frame rate with OBS’s encoder output. Also read the stream-health status and any messages in Live Control Room. If YouTube reports an unexpected value, verify the key configuration and test again rather than inferring the cause from the viewer’s playback menu.
Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its published recommendations include:

| Ingest format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 ingest recommendations, not guaranteed playback qualities. For a different codec or format, use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder settings table rather than carrying over an H.264 bitrate figure.
Verify keyframes and test before going live
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for video, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. Check the guidance for the codec and stream format you have selected.

Before an important event, test with representative motion and audio. Watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health information and messages while the test is running, then compare the ingest details with playback on a capable device. This helps separate an encoder or key configuration issue from a viewer-side rendition choice.

| What you see | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube’s ingest report shows a lower resolution than intended | OBS encoder output resolution; selected stream key and any manual-resolution setting | Correct the output or key configuration, then run another test stream and inspect ingest details. |
| Ingest details match, but the playback menu offers or selects a lower quality | The viewer’s selected quality, device, and network | Check the quality menu and test on another capable device or network; a lower rendition alone does not prove the source was sent low. |
| Resolution or stream health is unstable | Live Control Room stream-health messages; bitrate relative to codec, resolution, and frame rate | Use the appropriate YouTube bitrate recommendation and test with representative content before the event. |
