Arthur Fleck rejects the Joker persona in court, is convicted and returns to Arkham, where another inmate stabs him to death. The killer then carves a grin into his own face. The scene suggests that someone else may take up the Joker image—but it does not confirm that inmate’s identity or future.
What happens at the end of Joker: Folie à Deux?
Arthur tells the court who he is
Awaiting trial at Arkham, Arthur has spent the film caught between his identity as Arthur Fleck and the public character of the Joker. In court, he disavows that role and speaks as Arthur. His choice is a rejection of the persona that has come to define him for other people.
Lee leaves, and Arthur returns to Arkham
After a courtroom explosion, Lee rejects Arthur’s overture. The story then returns him to Arkham, where a young, unnamed inmate approaches with a joke. Arthur listens. The inmate stabs him repeatedly and carves a grin into his own face—a visual detail TIME describes as a Glasgow smile.
Why does Arthur reject the Joker identity?
Director Todd Phillips reads Arthur’s response to the inmate as a small act of kindness and a sign of self-acceptance. Phillips said, “I think Arthur has found peace with the idea, with the struggle that it’s okay to be yourself.” He also explains that Arthur recognizes the young man’s nervousness about telling a joke: “He’s like, ‘Well, yeah, okay, of course’ because he knows that feeling of wanting to make somebody laugh.” Phillips calls the exchange beautiful because Arthur still has hope. Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Arthur, described its feeling simply: “There’s a warmth in that scene, which is nice.” [Interview with Phillips and Phoenix]

That reading makes the ending’s contrast pointed: Arthur responds to the inmate as a person, while the inmate turns the Joker image into another performance, through violence and self-mutilation. The film leaves Arthur’s final act small and human rather than triumphant.
Is the inmate the next Joker?
The ending strongly implies that the inmate may become a Joker figure: he kills Arthur, carves a grin into his own face and laughs. TIME reads the scene as setting up a possible Batman arch-nemesis. But the film does not name him or confirm that he becomes the Joker of the wider Batman mythology. What is shown is Arthur’s death and the inmate’s self-inflicted grin; the successor idea is an inference from those images. TIME’s ending account

Phillips has also framed the first film as an origin story in a deliberately limited sense. “The first film is called Joker. It’s not called The Joker,” he said, adding that the script called it “An origin story,” not “the origin story.” His point was that Arthur might not be the Joker himself, but could inspire one. That distinction fits the sequel’s final image without turning its implication into confirmation. Phillips’s explanation

Phillips told Le Monde that “folie à deux” refers to a shared delusion, while the French wording also lends the title a romantic dimension. He described the film as a love story that also addresses corruption in the justice system and in entertainment. Arthur’s struggle over whether to be himself or perform the Joker sits within that larger question: what happens when suffering and identity become material for public consumption? Phillips put the concern this way: “If everything becomes entertainment, then what happens to entertainment itself?” Le Monde interview

The musical form reinforces that tension. Phillips said the songs are standards Arthur’s mother listened to when he was a child, and that he wanted performers to sing live on set. The official film site credits Lady Gaga as music consultant. In this light, the courtroom persona and the final inmate’s grin suggest how a private life can be remade as spectacle—even as Arthur’s last exchange offers a brief alternative: listening to another person without turning the moment into a show.
