If OBS says a showroom clip or other media file cannot be found, open that OBS Media Source’s properties and check its Local File selection. Relink it if the file was moved or renamed, or restore it if it was deleted. Then check that the source is visible, not covered by another source, and playing as intended in the scene you plan to put on air.
Find the missing media source
- Select the OBS scene where the showroom video, audio, or other clip should appear.
- In the Sources list, locate the expected Media Source. Confirm it is present and that its visibility (eye) control is enabled.
- Right-click the Media Source and open Properties. Inspect its Local File selection and compare the displayed file with the asset’s current name and location.
OBS Media Sources play local media files. OBS lists common video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
Choose the fix that matches what happened to the file
The file was moved or renamed
In the Media Source properties, use the Local File control to select the file at its current location, with its current name, then apply the change. The source refers to a local file selection, so changing the file’s location or name can leave the existing selection pointing to the old path.
The file was deleted
Restore the intended asset to the computer, then select it in the source’s Local File property. If you cannot restore that file, choose a replacement asset deliberately; selecting a different clip changes what viewers will see and is not equivalent to recovering the original.

The setup was copied or moved to another computer
OBS portable mode can carry its configuration, but it does not automatically make media files in a scene collection portable. If you relocate the setup, update the scene collection’s media paths on the new machine or arrange for the files to be available at a path common to the devices. See OBS’s portable mode documentation.
The file is selected, but you still cannot see it
Check the source’s eye control and its position in the Sources list. A source higher in the list appears above sources below it and can obscure them. Move the media source above anything covering it, or hide the covering source, as appropriate. OBS explains source visibility and ordering in its Sources guide.

Check playback and the complete scene before going live
In the Media Source properties, confirm that playback options match the showroom plan. For example, check whether the asset should loop or restart when its scene becomes active. Preview the intended scene and confirm the media is visible and behaves correctly, including any planned pre-stream, break, or after-stream scene transitions.
OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before streaming. Studio Mode lets you stage changes in the edit/preview area and transition them to the live scene when ready. Follow the OBS Quickstart Guide for its scene and testing workflow.

What a file-not-found error does—and does not—tell you
The error points first to the configured local file selection: OBS cannot use the expected asset at that selection. By itself, it does not show that the file’s codec is unsupported or that the YouTube connection is broken. Check the file path and scene composition before changing unrelated streaming settings.
OBS also has a VLC Video source for playlist use and extended media support; it requires VLC to be installed. That is an alternative for a playlist workflow, not a necessary repair for one missing local file. The Media Sources guide describes both source types.
