To scale a relaxation video for YouTube without stretching it, fit the source inside a 16:9 output frame while preserving its display aspect ratio. For variable-aspect-ratio footage, start with scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2. Add padding if the output must always be exactly 1920Ă—1080; use a direct 1920Ă—1080 scale only when the source is already 16:9. Scaling alone does not keep a stream running 24/7: it only sets the video dimensions.
Choose how the source should fit the frame
A 16:9 canvas is a common landscape target for YouTube, but the source image does not have to be 16:9. Decide whether preserving the whole image or filling every pixel of the canvas matters more:
- Fit and preserve the whole image: scale the source down or up to fit within the 1920Ă—1080 box, then pad any unused area. This avoids cropping, though the padding will be visible around a source with a different shape.
- Crop to fill: enlarge the source until it covers the frame, then crop the overflow. Use this only when losing parts of the image is acceptable.
- Stretch: avoid changing a non-16:9 image directly to 1920Ă—1080 just to fill the frame; circles, faces, and scenery can look distorted.
FFmpeg distinguishes display aspect ratio (DAR) from sample aspect ratio (SAR). Its FAQ explains that scaling adjusts SAR to keep DAR constant. The FFmpeg Project’s FFmpeg FAQ describes this behavior and intentional aspect-metadata correction.
Inspect the source before choosing dimensions
Use ffprobe to check the input’s dimensions, display aspect ratio, frame rate, and pixel format before rendering. This matters especially for older or anamorphic sources, where non-square pixels or incorrect aspect metadata can make the picture appear stretched even when the dimensions seem reasonable.

If the picture is distorted, determine whether the cause is the image itself or its aspect metadata before changing it. FFmpeg’s setsar and setdar filters can intentionally correct metadata, but they should not be used to disguise a crop or an incorrect scaling choice. Check the behavior against your locally installed FFmpeg version: its filter documentation is generated from the newest revision and may differ from an older build.
Scale to fit, then pad to a fixed 16:9 canvas
For a source of varying aspect ratio, this filter chain fits the image inside 1920Ă—1080 and centers it on a fixed-size canvas:

-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
The decrease mode makes the scaled image fit within the requested box while retaining its proportions. The pad stage fills the remaining space around it so the resulting canvas is exactly 1920Ă—1080. The force_divisible_by=2 option keeps scaled dimensions divisible by two, useful for common video-encoding formats.

This is a configuration pattern, not a tested command for a particular input, encoder, GPU, or FFmpeg build. Preview the rendered video and verify the final dimensions and aspect ratio before sending it to YouTube. Padding color and placement can be customized for the visual style of the stream; choose a background that does not distract from the relaxation footage.
When the source is already 16:9
If you have verified that the source is 16:9 and its aspect metadata is correct, scale=1920:1080 may be sufficient. Do not upscale a smaller source on the assumption that it creates extra detail: changing the output dimensions cannot restore detail absent from the original. Choose an ingest resolution appropriate to the source and the available upload connection.

When crop-to-fill is the right choice
Crop-to-fill can produce an edge-to-edge frame from a source with a different aspect ratio, but it removes part of the picture. Compose or preview the crop to confirm it does not cut off an important feature. FFmpeg’s force_original_aspect_ratio=increase mode can enlarge to cover a box; cropping may then be needed to reach a fixed canvas. Consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg version before relying on a particular filter combination.
Choose YouTube ingest settings with scaling
Output resolution is only one part of a live encoding setup. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends different bitrates depending on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at the stated 30 fps settings, its recommendations include:

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
These are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not universal guarantees of image quality or mandatory settings. AV1 and H.265/HEVC have different recommendations. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to use; the table can change.
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streaming, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Its recommended advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit depth for SDR.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream data to and through Google’s servers.
Match your encoder settings to the actual source and your stable upload capacity. A speed test can help assess the connection, but test with representative audio and motion as well: a calm static scene may not reveal behavior during a more demanding section.

- Render a sample: inspect the scaled and padded result for distortion, unwanted bars, or cropping, and confirm the output resolution and aspect ratio.
- Run a preflight stream: send a representative segment with the intended audio, motion, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room: YouTube detects encoder settings by default and transcodes the live stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Review stream health and any messages rather than assuming the encoder output guarantees a healthy stream.
- Confirm the full playback chain: check video framing, audio, and continuity at the destination before relying on the stream.
A correct scaling filter does not provide a complete unattended reliability plan. It cannot guarantee a stable internet connection, restart a failed FFmpeg process, restore a YouTube connection, or establish that you have the rights to stream the material.
Common scaling and streaming problems
- The image looks stretched: confirm the source’s DAR and SAR with
ffprobe. Check whether the source metadata is wrong before changing dimensions or intentionally correcting SAR/DAR. - There are bars or empty space:
force_original_aspect_ratio=decreasepreserves the full picture but does not fill the canvas by itself. Add apadstage for a fixed frame, or choose crop-to-fill only if the lost edges are acceptable. - The crop cuts off part of the scene: inspect the enlarged image before cropping. If the whole visual must remain visible, use fit-plus-padding instead.
- The output is 1080p but looks soft: upscaling changes dimensions, not source detail. Use a resolution that suits the original footage.
- The live stream buffers or loses health: recheck stable upload capacity and the codec, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder load. Scaling does not correct network or process failures; review YouTube’s Live Control Room messages and test again.
- The scaling option behaves differently than expected: verify the installed FFmpeg version and consult its local filter documentation. The online FFmpeg filter reference may describe a newer revision.
Use only material you have the right to stream
Long duration does not change copyright obligations. Before broadcasting music, ambient recordings, stock footage, or other people’s videos, confirm that your license permits continuous public livestreaming on YouTube, including any required attribution and restrictions. A video available online is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules can also affect whether a channel or stream remains available; scaling and encoding do not resolve rights issues.
