To keep a YouTube yoga stream playing after you close a laptop lid, change the computer’s lid-close action so it does not put the laptop to sleep. On Windows, set this separately for battery and plugged-in use in Control Panel. On a Mac, the reliable closed-lid setup Apple documents is for a Mac connected to power and an external display, keyboard, and mouse; a sleep-prevention option alone is not a guaranteed override for every Mac.
Windows: change what closing the lid does
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, Microsoft’s Control Panel instructions let you choose the lid-close action independently for battery and plugged-in use. Choose an action that does not put the laptop to sleep if you want the stream to continue.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- Choose a non-sleep action for On battery and, separately, for Plugged in. You can use different actions for each state.
- Select Save changes, then test the stream in the power state you plan to use.
Microsoft notes that available options depend on the PC and its manufacturer. If the lid-action control is missing or the laptop still sleeps, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model. Microsoft’s guide to shutting down, sleeping, or hibernating a PC covers the setting.
Windows 11 idle timeouts are separate
Windows 11 also has display and idle-sleep controls at Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. These control how long the screen or PC waits when idle; they are not the same as the action triggered by closing the lid. If the laptop sleeps when you close it, check the Control Panel lid setting as well. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide.

Mac: know which closed-lid setup Apple documents
Apple’s closed-display instructions address a Mac laptop connected to an external display. For that setup, connect the Mac to power and use an external keyboard and mouse. This is Apple’s specified arrangement for using the Mac with its lid closed; it is not a universal guarantee for every Mac model or for a laptop playing audio without an external display. Follow Apple’s external-display guidance and check compatibility for your Mac and accessories.
Sleep-prevention setting
Apple’s Mac battery guide documents the option Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off. It may be relevant when the Mac is on power, but Apple also notes that settings and connected devices can affect sleep and wake behavior. Do not assume this option by itself overrides lid-close behavior on every Mac. If the stream stops, consult Apple’s guidance for unexpected Mac sleep or wake and the documentation for your model and macOS version.

Check the stream after changing the setting
- Start the YouTube yoga stream and confirm that it is playing before closing the lid.
- Test while plugged in, then test on battery only if you need the stream to continue in that state. The lid actions can differ between the two.
- After closing the lid, check from another device whether the live stream continues. A laptop that stays awake can still lose playback for reasons unrelated to lid sleep, such as a network interruption or the source stream ending.
- If the behavior does not match the setting, reopen the lid and check the selected power state, the manufacturer’s power controls, and the laptop’s model-specific guidance.
