Choose the right FFmpeg concat method

Inspect the clips before joining
Check each file’s streams and properties before choosing filters. ffprobe can show the codecs, dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, audio sample rates, channel layouts, and stream presence. Differences beyond codec—such as resolution, frame timing, or audio layout—may also need attention.

Create a playlist for compatible files
For the concat demuxer, create a plain-text file such as inputs.txt. Put one file entry on each line, in the desired playback order. Relative paths are easiest when the playlist and media files are in the same directory.

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i inputs.txt -c copy joined.mp4-safe 0 permits paths that the demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe. Use it only with a playlist you trust. The demuxer requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. It uses each file’s recorded duration to adjust timestamps for the next one; inaccurate durations can lead to artifacts. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation · FFmpeg stream-copy documentation
Join different codecs with the concat filter
When clips use different codecs, use the concat filter and encode the joined result. This basic example assumes each input has exactly one video stream and one audio stream:

This command is illustrative, not a tested recipe for arbitrary files. The concat filter expects corresponding segments to be suitable for concatenation. If dimensions differ, for example, you may need to scale clips consistently and set sample aspect ratio with setsar. Differences in frame timing, pixel format, audio sample rate, or channel layout may call for filters such as fps or aresample, or other deliberate normalization. Choose target values based on the source material and desired output rather than applying filters blindly. If a clip has no audio
The example graph references an audio stream from every input. If one clip lacks audio, those stream references will fail. Build a graph that supplies silent audio for that segment, or concatenate video and audio separately; the exact graph depends on which inputs contain audio and on the desired output layout.

Prepare the output for YouTube
YouTube’s recommended upload settings list MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and AAC-LC among its recommendations. YouTube also recommends uploading at the same frame rate as the recording. Check the current guidance and match the output to your sources instead of forcing a frame rate or aspect ratio without a reason. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings
For SDR video, YouTube’s published recommendations include 8 Mbps for 1080p at a standard frame rate and 12 Mbps for 1080p at a high frame rate. These are recommended bitrates, not mandatory minimums. The settings page also covers color space and audio recommendations; consult it for your target resolution and content.

Troubleshoot common concat problems
- “Unsafe file name” or a path is rejected: use simple relative paths in the playlist, or add
-safe 0for a playlist you trust. Avoid using that option with untrusted manifest contents. - Stream-copy fails or the join has glitches: confirm that inputs have matching streams, codecs, time bases, and compatible parameters. If codecs differ, switch to the concat filter and re-encode. Incorrect recorded durations can also disrupt timestamps between demuxer-concatenated files.
- Filter graph reports a missing stream: check the stream indexes with
ffprobe. The example requires one video and one audio stream in every input; adapt the graph when a stream is absent. - Filter graph rejects segments or the output looks wrong: compare dimensions, pixel formats, frame timing, sample rates, and channel layouts. Normalize only the properties that differ and re-check the result.
- The YouTube upload is rejected or plays unexpectedly: inspect the exported container, codecs, scan type, frame rate, and audio against YouTube’s current recommended settings. A recommendation is not a guarantee that every file will suit every upload.
Check rights and channel suitability
Encoding and joining files does not grant permission to upload them. Before publishing, make sure you have the necessary rights to the footage, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s copyright and channel monetization policies. A technically valid upload is not necessarily eligible for monetization; reused material can raise separate policy concerns.
