Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can run a continuous Assamese music broadcast from an India-based Linux VPS by looping an authorized audio-and-visual feed through an encoder such as FFmpeg and sending it to a YouTube Live event over RTMPS. The VPS can keep the encoder running without a home computer, but it cannot guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: you still need a permitted, stable outbound connection, a correctly configured YouTube event, and rights covering both the recordings and the underlying songs.
What you need before starting
Plan the broadcast as three separate pieces: the media and music permissions, YouTube’s live event and ingest settings, and the VPS encoder and network. An always-on server solves only the part that keeps an encoder process running.
- A prepared feed: an audio playlist plus a visual element you are authorized to use. A static image or other visual may suit a music stream, but it must also be cleared for the intended use.
- A YouTube channel with live access: confirm live access and any restrictions in the channel’s own YouTube Live controls. Eligibility is account-specific; do not assume a channel can go live until its controls confirm it.
- A Linux VPS: choose a provider and plan whose terms permit continuous streaming and whose sustained outbound capacity can support your selected bitrate with room for variation. No particular provider, VPS size, or uptime level is established here.
- An encoder: FFmpeg is one software option. The settings below are a starting point, not a tested command or guarantee for a particular VPS.
- Music and visual rights: secure permission for the exact material, territories, duration, and use before broadcasting.
Clear Assamese music rights before you schedule the stream
Buying or possessing an audio file does not by itself give you permission to broadcast it publicly. Music rights can involve separate layers: rights in the particular sound recording and rights in the underlying musical and literary works. IPRS describes recording owners such as PPL, Novex, and RMPL as examples, and licensing for musical and literary works within IPRS’s repertoire. A licence from one rights holder or society should not be assumed to clear every layer or every song.
IPRS puts the purchase distinction this way: “Just as purchasing a printed copy of a theatrical play that is in copyright does not entitle the purchaser to perform the play in public, so also the purchaser of a copy of a piece of music or of a commercial recording, does not entitle him to perform in public the work embodied in the copy or recording.” See IPRS licensing guidance and verify the repertoire and permissions directly with the relevant rights holders.

Build a rights record for the playlist
- List every track, version, and recording you plan to include. Assamese-language or regional repertoire is not automatically cleared by its language or origin.
- Identify the sound recording owner and the owners or administrators of the underlying musical and literary works for each track.
- Ask for explicit permission covering continuous YouTube livestreaming, relevant territories, duration, and monetization or archiving if applicable. Clarify whether any separate collecting-society licences or author royalties apply.
- Ask licensed owners to add your channel to their YouTube Content ID allowlist where needed, and confirm that the allowlisting has taken effect before going live.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, a placeholder replacing the feed, interruption, or termination; strikes can also end a live stream. Even if you hold a licence, YouTube says the owner may need to allowlist your channel. A live archive can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its stream key
- Open the channel’s YouTube Live controls, verify that live access is available, and create or select the event you intend to use.
- In the event’s stream settings, retrieve the current ingest address and stream key shown for that event. Do not copy a URL or key from an old guide; use the values displayed in your own Live Control Room.
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. RTMPS sends RTMP through an SSL connection. Google’s implementation guidance specifies the RTMPS protocol, a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and application path, port 443, and SNI using the server hostname during TLS setup. Consult Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated September 14, 2026 UTC, if configuring a client that needs those connection details.
- Store the stream key in a protected configuration or secret store with access limited to the service account running the encoder. Do not put it in a public script, repository, support ticket, or shared screenshot. Rotate it in YouTube if it is exposed.
Choose encoder settings your VPS can sustain
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. For a straightforward static-visual music feed, 720p30 H.264 with AAC is a conservative example. The VPS’s sustained upload must carry the outgoing bitrate continuously, with margin for network variation.

| Output example | YouTube H.264 bitrate figures | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Budget for a stable connection above your chosen output rate, not just a speed-test peak. |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | Requires more sustained outbound capacity than the 720p30 example. |
These are YouTube Help recommendations, not VPS plan specifications. The service automatically transcodes a live feed for different output formats. You can choose a lower output setting if it better fits the connection, but check YouTube’s current encoder table before settling on a profile. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
The National Informatics Centre lists 2–4 Mbps per stream for its own webcast service workflow. That figure applies to the NIC webcast context, not as a YouTube bitrate recommendation or an India VPS capacity rule; it should not be used to size this YouTube stream. The NIC page also refers to encoder and outbound RTMP port 1935 access for its hired-agency workflow.

Install and run the encoder on Linux
First confirm the VPS operating system, available CPU or hardware encoding, storage, and provider policy. Install FFmpeg using the package source supported for that system, then make a short test with representative music and visuals. No tested FFmpeg command, safe VPS size, or provider-specific configuration is established here, so verify syntax and resource use against your installed FFmpeg version and current YouTube event settings rather than copying an unverified command.
- Prepare the playlist. Place only cleared media on the VPS and confirm that every referenced file is readable by the service account. Use a looping playlist or equivalent input arrangement, and ensure transitions do not create unintended silence or gaps.
- Configure output. Set the chosen resolution and frame rate, H.264 video if using the example profile, AAC audio, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Select a bitrate the VPS can sustain and set the output to the event’s current RTMPS endpoint and stream key.
- Keep secrets out of process logs. Avoid putting the stream key in a command line that is recorded in shared logs or visible to other users. Restrict configuration file permissions and the account that can read them.
- Run under a service supervisor. Configure the process to start on boot and restart after an encoder crash. A supervisor or retry strategy can recover a failed process, but it cannot fix a broken network route, a YouTube interruption, or a copyright block.
- Test before public launch. Start privately or use an appropriate test event. Inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages, and listen and watch for gaps using audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. YouTube advises testing, checking upload capacity, and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Plan human monitoring. Arrange who will respond to encoder, network, stream-health, or rights alerts. An unattended loop is not the same as a monitored, guaranteed broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong or stale ingest address or key; incompatible RTMPS/TLS setup; outbound port blocked. | Copy the current event settings again, verify RTMPS endpoint and application path, and check the VPS firewall and provider network rules. For an RTMPS implementation, check port 443 and SNI hostname handling. |
| Stream health reports unstable connection or viewers see buffering | Selected bitrate exceeds sustained upload, or the route has variable capacity or packet loss. | Measure sustained outbound capacity and reduce output bitrate or resolution. Test again under representative conditions; a brief speed-test peak is not enough evidence of continuous capacity. |
| Encoder exits and the stream stops | Process crash, exhausted resources, missing media file, or invalid playlist entry. | Inspect restricted service logs, verify file paths and permissions, check CPU and memory use, and configure a supervisor retry. Confirm the encoder reconnects successfully rather than assuming a restart restored the live event. |
| Live feed is replaced, interrupted, or terminated | Third-party content match, rights dispute, or live-stream strike. | Check YouTube’s notices, pause the affected material, and resolve rights with the relevant owner. If licensed, confirm the channel is on the owner’s Content ID allowlist; do not assume a licence alone prevents interruption. |
| Audio or picture is missing, out of sync, or silent | Bad source file, playlist transition, unsupported output settings, or encoder input mapping issue. | Test each source and transitions locally, verify audio and video are present in the encoded output, and replay a representative test event before publishing. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a VPS in India automatically make a stream compliant with Indian music rights?
No. The applicable rights depend on the recordings, underlying works, rights holders, and intended use. Confirm permissions for the specific catalogue and territories before streaming.
Can I use RTMP port 1935 because the NIC webcast page mentions it?
The NIC page’s port 1935 prerequisite is for its webcast workflow. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies port 443 for its RTMPS connection; use the current event settings and protocol you configure.
