How to Set FFmpeg Bitrate for a 24/7 YouTube Stream on Indian Fiber Broadband

YouTube Live’s H.264 bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate. Match FFmpeg to the right recommendation, measure real upload capacity, and leave headroom.

Set FFmpeg’s bitrate for the YouTube Live ingest format you actually plan to send, then keep the total outgoing stream comfortably below your measured, stable upload capacity. For H.264 SDR, YouTube’s current English live-settings table recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; its listed minimums are 3 Mbps and 5 Mbps respectively. A fiber connection or advertised download speed alone cannot tell you which profile will hold on your connection.

Choose a YouTube Live profile before setting FFmpeg

YouTube’s live encoder table is codec-, resolution- and frame-rate-specific. The following H.264 figures are from YouTube Help’s current English live-settings page; they are platform guidance, not measurements of Indian broadband. Check the page before configuring a stream because platform guidance can change.

H.264 ingest format Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
360p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
480p30 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Minimum is not the same as recommended: for example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for 1080p30 H.264 and 14 Mbps as its recommendation. These figures are for the incoming live stream, not YouTube’s separate prerecorded-upload guidance. YouTube also publishes distinct recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply the H.264 row to another codec.

Higher resolution and frame rate generally need more bitrate to preserve comparable detail. If your uplink does not have reliable room for the recommended profile, a lower resolution or frame rate with headroom is a safer choice than running near the line’s limit.

Measure upload capacity and leave room

  1. Test from the actual streaming computer and network. Use an upload speed test at different times, including periods when the household connection is busy. A single result is a snapshot, not evidence of uninterrupted 24/7 capacity.
  2. Use upload, not download, as your constraint. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth. Its network tips recommend leaving room between total outgoing bitrate and available upload bandwidth, giving 20% headroom as guidance.
  3. Count the whole uplink load. Video and audio, protocol overhead, and other devices all use capacity. Do not set the encoder equal to a measured peak or assume the whole upload is available to FFmpeg.
  4. Test the real stream. Send representative footage and audio, then monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If the connection fluctuates, reduce bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate and test again.

There is no single bitrate that can be called safe for Indian fiber broadband as a whole. The answer depends on your city and ISP plan, actual upload measurements and variation, and competing network use. The available platform guidance does not establish an India-wide ISP uptime guarantee or a universal fair-use or data cap for a continuous stream; check your provider’s terms and your own connection.

Translate the profile into FFmpeg options

For software H.264 encoding with libx264, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate limits the peak rate, and -bufsize configures the rate-control buffer. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), RTMP or RTMPS ingest, and AAC or MP3 audio. The following is an illustrative command for a 30 fps H.264 stream with a two-second GOP:

  • 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

This is an example, not a tested command or a guarantee that every FFmpeg build, input file, encoder, or stream key will accept it unchanged. At 30 fps, -g 60 represents 60 frames, or two seconds. The example’s -b:v 5M is not the recommended H.264 setting for 1080p30; substitute the YouTube recommendation for your chosen format, then make sure it fits your measured upload headroom. Matching -b:v and -maxrate is commonly used for CBR-like x264 behavior; YouTube’s guidance does not mandate this particular buffer size.

Consult the FFmpeg documentation for generic bitrate options and the x264 parameters documentation for encoder-specific controls. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build includes libx264, keep the stream key private, and check the ingest status in YouTube Live Control Room. The command loops a local input file; it does not make a 24/7 process immune to a computer, power, network, or source-file failure.

Keep a 24/7 stream operational

A suitable bitrate is only one part of continuity. For an always-on setup, separately consider local power, router and ONT uptime, computer thermal behavior, source-file continuity, and how the process will be monitored and restarted after a failure. YouTube recommends testing before going live with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health during the event. A correct encoder setting cannot guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded YouTube channel stream to continue without keeping a home computer online, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps streaming with your computer off, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and sends your upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
