Keep one YouTube livestream running and switch the picture and audio layout in OBS Studio: prepare a Worship scene and a Sermon scene, then transition between them when the service cues call for it. The scene change happens in OBS; it does not require ending and restarting the YouTube broadcast.
How the switch works
YouTube receives one continuous feed from an encoder such as OBS Studio. OBS scenes determine what that feed contains at a given moment. A worship scene might show a title slide or the worship team, while a sermon scene shows the preacher’s camera. Transitioning between those scenes changes the program output while the same YouTube stream remains connected.
Choose a layout that fits your service and equipment. For live worship, use a camera or production feed showing the stage or congregation. For a pre-recorded music bed, add a rights-cleared media source and a suitable still image or slide. Keep sermon video and its audio feed ready in the sermon scene.
Set up YouTube Live and OBS
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password; reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if it is available, or enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, use YouTube’s Go live control after the preview appears. Follow the current on-screen workflow, since Live Control Room labels can change.
- Create named scenes. In OBS, add and clearly name at least
WorshipandSermon. A scene is a collection of sources. OBS supports media, audio, image, text and video-capture sources, including capture cards; see the OBS Sources Guide. - Add and verify each scene’s sources. In Worship, add the live worship camera/layout or the slide/image and media source for a pre-recorded music bed. In Sermon, add the preacher’s camera or capture feed and the sermon audio. Label and organize audio sources so the operator can tell which signal is active. If using a capture card, check that it matches the camera or switcher output, computer ports, operating system, resolution and frame rate.
- Choose a transition and rehearse it. Use a simple cut or fade and set a duration appropriate to your service. Add scene-switch hotkeys only if the operator can use them reliably. OBS Studio Mode lets the operator preview a scene before putting it live with Transition. The OBS Studio Overview Guide describes using Transition or a configured quick transition/hotkey to swap the preview and live scenes. Practice the service’s actual cue order before broadcast.
Run the service without interrupting the broadcast
- Start the encoder and confirm that the expected video and audio appear in YouTube’s preview.
- Keep the YouTube stream connected as the service proceeds. When worship begins, put the Worship scene on air; when the sermon begins, transition to Sermon. Select the scene by name or use a rehearsed hotkey.
- Before taking a pre-recorded music source live, confirm that it is playing and audible in the program output. For live worship, confirm that the stage camera/layout and its audio are active.
- Monitor the stream during the service. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video, checking that viewers can reach the event from channel and watch pages, and monitoring audio and video quality. Choose bitrate settings appropriate to the connection and resolution using YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
- At the end, follow the encoder and Live Control Room instructions to end the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; if you rely on an archive or local recording, verify it after the service.
Plan music rights before going live
Check that the church’s rights cover the specific songs and recordings, the territories where they will be used, and both the live stream and any intended archive. Whether a particular church license covers a particular use depends on its terms; do not assume that permission to perform a song also covers a recording or online use.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A warning may ask the streamer to stop using the content; if it remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content may require the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and contact the relevant rights owner about allowlisting before the service.
Choose equipment for the signal path you actually have
A software-only OBS setup may be enough if compatible video and audio already reach the streaming computer. A capture card is one possible way to bring a camera or switcher output into OBS, but it is not required for every church. Match it to the devices and formats in use before buying.

A camera, separate audio interface or hardware encoder may help with a particular production need. YouTube describes encoder workflows using equipment such as cameras and preamps, and suggests professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; the choice should reflect the church’s existing setup, operator experience, budget and upload connection. YouTube also notes that getting started does not necessarily require expensive equipment. No particular brand or model is required by this workflow.
Troubleshoot common scene-switch problems
- The scene changes in OBS but YouTube still shows the previous shot: Check that the intended scene was put on air, not just selected in Studio Mode’s preview. Confirm the encoder is connected and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- The music slide appears, but the music is silent: Check that the media source is playing and that its audio reaches OBS’s program output. Confirm the correct audio source is enabled and audible before taking the scene live.
- The sermon picture works but speech is missing or too quiet: Check the camera/capture feed and the audio mixer path separately. Confirm the intended sermon feed is active and that OBS is receiving it.
- YouTube warns about music or interrupts the stream: Stop using the identified content if required, then resolve the rights issue. If the content is licensed, ask the rights owner whether the channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist before using it again.
- The stream drops or the picture becomes unstable: Check the encoder connection and whether the configured bitrate is suitable for the available upload connection and chosen resolution. Retest with service-like audio and video before the next broadcast, using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- A camera does not appear in OBS: Check that the capture device and camera output are compatible with the computer and OBS source configuration. Verify the camera or switcher output format against the capture card’s supported resolution and frame rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded church videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than switch a live service between live camera scenes, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
