There is no universal winner. For a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, compare the full monthly cost for a server in the region you need—including transfer, public IPv4, and any taxes—and check that its bandwidth allowance covers your stream. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, a continuous stream sends about 4.54 decimal TB of video payload in 30 days, before overhead. Lightsail bundles compute and transfer into monthly plans; Hetzner Cloud pricing varies by resource class and location, with public IPv4 charged separately in its documentation. Either way, a VPS is infrastructure you manage, not a guarantee that the encoder and broadcast will stay healthy.
Start with the stream workload, not the provider name
A server-based YouTube playlist can mean either looping an already encoded file and relaying it to YouTube, or decoding and transcoding media on the server. Those are different workloads. A relay still needs enough outbound transfer and a stable path to YouTube; transcoding adds substantial CPU requirements. Decide which workflow you need before comparing plans.
- Relay an encoded file: estimate outbound traffic from the stream bitrate and runtime, plus overhead. The file may be stored locally or fetched from elsewhere, which changes storage and inbound traffic.
- Transcode or re-encode: size the CPU for the actual encoding settings and test the selected instance under load. Do not assume a small VPS can encode reliably because it has a particular vCPU count.
- Run a playlist process: plan how the process starts after a reboot, recovers after failure, and reconnects to YouTube. These are implementation responsibilities, not an automatic provider guarantee.
The right choice also depends on server-region availability, audience geography, budget, and how much firewall, operating-system, and process administration you want to handle.
Lightsail and Hetzner: what the published terms establish
| Decision point | Amazon Lightsail | Hetzner Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Billing model | Monthly bundles combine compute, storage, and transfer. AWS’s cited Linux/Unix public IPv4 entry bundle is $5/month and includes 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. AWS Lightsail pricing | Cloud Server prices vary by resource class and location. Hetzner’s overview says public IP addresses are excluded from Cloud Server prices. Hetzner Cloud Server overview |
| Transfer | Both inbound and outbound traffic count against the allowance; AWS may charge for excess outbound traffic. The transfer allowance is half the ordinary amount in Mumbai, Sydney, Jakarta, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and São Paulo. Confirm the plan for the region you select. AWS Lightsail instance FAQ | Hetzner lists traffic allowances by product and location. Its traffic documentation result lists 20 TB for EU CX Cloud Servers; verify that the amount and applicable terms match the exact plan and location you select. Hetzner traffic documentation |
| Public IPv4 | The cited entry bundle is specifically for Linux/Unix with public IPv4. Check current regional plan details when pricing your deployment. AWS Lightsail pricing | The Cloud Server overview lists Primary IPv4 at €0.50/month excluding VAT. The document was last changed 2022-06-28, so confirm current applicability and price before budgeting. Hetzner Cloud Server overview |
| Regions | Availability and transfer allowances vary by AWS region. AWS Lightsail instance FAQ | Hetzner identifies Cloud Server locations in Europe, the USA, and Singapore. Check current availability for the plan you want. Hetzner Cloud |
| Compute and operations | Lightsail bundles common infrastructure and integrates with AWS services. For consistently high CPU needs such as video encoding, AWS recommends considering EC2 instead. AWS Lightsail instance FAQ AWS Lightsail instance FAQ | Hetzner offers shared and dedicated resource classes, plus configurable server, network, firewall, volume, and IP resources. Benchmark your actual workload rather than inferring performance from vCPU count. Hetzner Cloud Server overview |
The cited prices and transfer figures are not a like-for-like performance comparison: the Lightsail entry bundle is a specific small plan, while Hetzner cost depends on the selected server and location. Build a comparison for equivalent resources and include public IPv4, transfer, tax, and any excess charges. Neither provider’s plan price establishes that a complete YouTube broadcast will remain uninterrupted.

Thirty days contain 2,592,000 seconds. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30; at that bitrate for 30 days, the calculation is 4.536 decimal TB, rounded to 4.54 TB. This is an estimate of stream payload, not a provider-published figure. Allow extra for protocol overhead and other traffic.
For lower or higher bitrates, the estimate scales linearly. Compare expected outbound payload with the actual plan allowance for the selected region. AWS counts inbound and outbound against its allowance, while its cited FAQ describes possible charges for excess outbound traffic. For Hetzner, confirm the allowance and excess-traffic terms for the particular product and location; the 20 TB figure in the documentation result is specifically associated with EU CX Cloud Servers, not every Cloud plan.

Choose based on the trade-off that matters to you
Choose Lightsail when a bundled monthly plan fits
Lightsail’s appeal is a bundled monthly server plan and AWS integration. It can be easier to budget when the selected plan’s transfer allowance comfortably covers the stream. The allowance can be smaller in the named regions, so a plan that appears adequate elsewhere may not be adequate in Mumbai, Sydney, Jakarta, Malaysia, Hong Kong, or São Paulo. If your playlist must be transcoded continuously, AWS’s guidance points toward EC2 for highly configurable instances with consistently high CPU performance rather than treating a small Lightsail bundle as an encoding recommendation.
Choose Hetzner when its location and plan economics fit
Hetzner’s Cloud Server price depends on location and whether resources are shared or dedicated. Account separately for public IPv4, and verify the transfer allowance for the exact server and region. Its documented 20 TB figure applies to EU CX Cloud Servers as reported on the traffic page; it should not be generalized to other server classes or locations.

Do not decide on headline transfer alone
Proximity to your audience and to YouTube ingest may matter, but the available provider documentation does not establish a measured route-quality winner for this workload. Nor does a transfer allowance prove that CPU scheduling, the route, your playlist process, or YouTube ingest will be healthy. Test the specific server, media path, and reconnect behavior you intend to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure and validate the YouTube feed
- Decide whether you relay or transcode. Identify where the media file lives, which process loops it, whether it is re-encoded, and what bitrate will be sent. This determines outbound transfer, local storage, inbound fetching, and CPU needs.
- Use YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. Its encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and sets a maximum interval of four seconds. See YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Protect the stream key. The key authorizes an encoder feed to YouTube. Treat it like a password: keep it out of public scripts, logs, and screenshots. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Test before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A static file loop should still be checked for both audio and video behavior. YouTube’s encoder guidance
- Design recovery explicitly. Configure the playlist or encoder process to restart after failure and confirm how it reconnects to YouTube. Test a process restart and a dropped connection; an automatically restarted process is not, by itself, proof that the broadcast recovered successfully.
- Check rights and channel policy. Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream every video and audio track. YouTube’s live-stream copyright and channel rules apply to uploaded material as well as camera feeds; a technically healthy feed does not establish that its content is permitted. Review YouTube copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies, including reused-content guidance where monetization matters.
Common planning and reliability failures
- The transfer estimate seems far below the plan allowance. Check that it uses the stream’s sustained bitrate and full runtime, not just the size of one video file. Add overhead and other traffic; confirm regional terms and any overage charges.
- A server has enough storage but cannot sustain the encoding workload. Storage capacity does not indicate CPU headroom. If the process transcodes, test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate on the selected instance.
- The stream drops and stays offline. A server restart policy may revive the process without restoring a healthy YouTube feed. Test reconnect behavior and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The plan is priced correctly but the total bill is not. Include public IPv4, applicable taxes, transfer overage, and any separately selected volumes or resources. Lightsail’s region-specific allowance can also change the transfer calculation.
- The feed is online but risks a rights or monetization issue. Confirm permission for all content before streaming. Repeatedly airing material you do not control can create copyright problems; reused-content considerations may also affect monetization independently of whether a stream technically works.
