A YouTube watch page shows “Stream offline” when it is not receiving a playable live feed or when the scheduled event has not been taken live. Check both sides: confirm the cloud playlist job is running and sending output, then verify the correct event, stream URL and key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If YouTube shows a preview, the next question is whether the event still needs you to click “Go live.”
Why is my YouTube live stream offline?
A scheduled event and an active broadcast are separate states. The event can have a watch page before an encoder starts sending video, and a feed can reach YouTube without the creator having taken the event live. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to wait for the preview in Live Control Room and then click “Go live” (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
With a cloud-hosted playlist, there are therefore two places to check: the cloud service’s job and outbound feed, and the YouTube event receiving that feed. Without the host name, error text, protocol, or job logs, “offline” alone does not establish which side failed.
Diagnose it by what Live Control Room shows
No preview in Live Control Room
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Check the cloud host’s dashboard: make sure the playlist job is active and its output/feed is running. If available, inspect its output status or logs around the time the player went offline.
- Verify that the job targets the intended YouTube event and uses the matching ingest server URL and current stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as being “like your YouTube stream’s password and address”; its help page explains how to manage settings and reset a key if needed (Manage live stream settings).
- If the key was reset or may have been exposed, update it in the cloud encoder as well as in YouTube’s setup. A mismatched or old key can prevent the feed from reaching the intended stream.
- Wait for YouTube’s preview. If the cloud job reports output but YouTube still has no preview, check the ingest URL, selected protocol, and any service-side error details with the host.
Preview appears, but the public watch page says offline
- Confirm that the preview belongs to the exact scheduled event whose watch page you opened; a feed sent to another event will not make this page live.
- Check whether the workflow requires a manual “Go live” action. YouTube’s documented encoder sequence is to wait for preview and then click “Go live” (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Verify the event’s privacy and access settings, then open the event’s watch page to test that viewers can reach it. YouTube recommends checking event accessibility before a broadcast (Live streaming tips).
The stream starts, then drops
Check the cloud job’s uptime and output logs at the time of the interruption, and check whether YouTube still receives a feed. A job that stopped, lost its source file, or lost its connection needs attention at the host; a feed that continues leaving the host but no longer appears in YouTube points toward the ingest connection or event setup. Which diagnosis applies depends on the host’s own status information, which varies by service.

Only if the host sends HLS
Do not apply HLS requirements to an RTMP or RTMPS feed. For HLS ingest, compare the sender’s configuration with YouTube’s documented requirements: HTTPS, MPEG-TS segments, segment duration of 1–4 seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Check YouTube’s current supported codecs and ingest details in its live streaming tips.
Check channel eligibility if this is a new setup
Eligibility is a setup check, not proof of the cause of an offline screen. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours (Get started with live streaming). If the channel has never streamed, confirm activation before diagnosing the playlist itself.

Prevent an offline screen before the event
YouTube recommends configuring the encoder stream at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes ahead. Use the advance time to confirm the full path from playlist to public watch page rather than assuming that an active job means viewers can see the event (Live streaming tips).
- Open the intended event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Confirm the cloud playlist job is running and its outbound feed is active.
- Check the job’s YouTube server URL and current stream key.
- Wait for preview and confirm that it shows the expected video and audio.
- Click “Go live” if the workflow requires it, then check the event’s watch page.
- If the feed uses HLS, validate its settings against YouTube’s HLS requirements.

What to send support for a specific diagnosis
If the checks do not identify the failure, give the cloud host or YouTube support the details that locate it: the host name, whether Live Control Room has a preview, the ingest protocol, the time the offline screen appears, and any relevant cloud job status or error. Do not send a stream key; it grants access to the stream and should be treated like a password.
