Matthew Perry’s live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, repeatedly injected him with ketamine, including at least three injections on the day Perry died. Iwamasa later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death and serious bodily injury. On May 27, 2026, he was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison and fined $10,000, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
What Iwamasa did
Iwamasa was Perry’s live-in personal assistant, not a medical professional. The Justice Department says he repeatedly administered ketamine to Perry and had no medical expertise or training. At least three injections were given on October 28, 2023, the day Perry died; prosecutors said those injections caused his death.
In its May 2026 sentencing announcement, the Justice Department quoted prosecutors’ position that, “rather than help Mr. Perry maintain sobriety, [Iwamasa] became his enabler and drug supplier,” ultimately causing Perry’s death. Iwamasa was paid $150,000 per year as Perry’s assistant, the same release said.
Who supplied the ketamine
The supply chain changed over time. The physician Salvador Plasencia supplied ketamine earlier and taught Iwamasa how to inject it, but the Justice Department explicitly says Plasencia did not provide the ketamine that caused Perry’s death. The fatal ketamine came from Jasveen Sangha and reached Iwamasa through Erik Fleming.

How the case developed
- September–October 2023: The Justice Department says Iwamasa conspired with others to distribute ketamine to Perry. Plasencia supplied 20 vials, along with tablets and syringes, between September 30 and October 12, and taught Iwamasa to inject Perry.
- October 2023: Sangha and Fleming sold 51 vials to Iwamasa over 11 days, according to the Justice Department.
- October 28, 2023: Iwamasa administered at least three injections from the supply obtained through Fleming from Sangha. Prosecutors said the injections caused Perry’s death.
- August 2024: Federal authorities announced charges against five defendants. That announcement described allegations at the indictment stage and stressed that an indictment is not proof of guilt and defendants are presumed innocent.
- December 2025–May 2026: Plasencia, Sangha and Iwamasa were sentenced in turn. In May 2026, the Justice Department said Iwamasa was the fifth and final defendant sentenced.
What happened to Perry’s assistant legally
Iwamasa pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death and serious bodily injury. His sentence was 41 months in federal prison, plus a $10,000 fine. The Justice Department’s May 27, 2026 release identifies him as the final defendant sentenced in the federal case.
