Windows Task Scheduler can start your encoder automatically when the computer boots or when you sign in. It does not, by itself, keep a YouTube stream online nonstop: the computer, power, network, encoder, and YouTube connection must all remain available, and you should test how your encoder behaves after interruptions.
What Task Scheduler can—and cannot—do
A scheduled task launches a program in response to a trigger. For a YouTube stream, that program is your encoder, configured to send video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. Microsoft documents startup and logon triggers, but those triggers do not establish a recovery system for encoder crashes, power loss, internet outages, or every YouTube interruption.
For a documentary channel, this setup can automate starting a pre-prepared playlist or video stream. It is not a camera-broadcast setup, and the exact unattended behavior depends on the encoder and its configuration. The steps below use OBS as a familiar example of an encoder, but there is no universal OBS command line or executable path that works for every installation.
Prepare YouTube Live and the encoder first
Enable live streaming
Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until the moment you plan to start: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Create or select the stream and protect its key
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube or custom-server connection settings. YouTube explains that the key tells YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed. Treat it as a secret: YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement: Manage live stream settings.
Do not put a real stream key in a public script, screenshot, or log. If your encoder requires a key in launch arguments, protect the file and access to the Windows account that can read it.

Configure and test a manual encoder launch
Set up the stream in your encoder and start it manually before creating a task. Verify that YouTube receives the feed and that the intended video, playlist, audio, and stream settings are correct. Installing an encoder does not configure the YouTube connection for you. YouTube’s encoder guide covers connecting an encoder and identifies software and hardware encoder options; its listed products are not made by YouTube.
Create the Task Scheduler job
Choose the trigger that matches the encoder
- At startup: Choose an ONSTART trigger if the encoder should launch when Windows starts. This is useful when the machine is meant to begin streaming after a reboot, but test whether the encoder can run in the actual session conditions you plan to use.
- At logon: Choose an ONLOGON trigger if the encoder needs an interactive user session, a visible desktop, or a user-loaded profile. Test using the same Windows account intended for the stream.
Microsoft documents both trigger types in its Task Triggers overview. Neither choice is universally right for every encoder.

Build and save the task
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu.
- Create a task and give it a recognizable name, such as “YouTube encoder.” Choose the trigger that matches your intended boot or sign-in behavior.
- Add a Start a program action. Set the program to the actual encoder executable installed on your PC. Add arguments only if you have tested them with that encoder and configuration; do not assume a generic OBS command will work.
- Save the task. Review its trigger and action to ensure they point to the intended account, executable, and tested configuration.
Microsoft’s schtasks documentation gives this startup example: schtasks /create /tn MyApp /tr c:appsmyapp.exe /sc onstart. It is a syntax example, not a ready-to-run OBS command. Replace the example program with your encoder’s real executable and use only arguments that you have verified for your installation: schtasks create.
Test the scheduled launch before relying on it
- In Task Scheduler, select the task and choose Run.
- Confirm that the encoder actually opens or runs as intended under the task’s configured account and session.
- Check the encoder connection and YouTube Studio to confirm that YouTube receives the feed.
- Test the real trigger, too: restart Windows for an ONSTART task, or sign out and back in for an ONLOGON task. Confirm the result rather than assuming that a successful manual run proves the trigger will work.
Keep the computer powered on and the network available for the stream to continue. A scheduled launch is not the same as monitoring or automatic recovery; the cited Microsoft and YouTube instructions do not promise recovery from every crash or disconnection.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a continuous stream that exceeds 12 hours being available as one complete automatic archive. If you need a complete copy, plan separate stream segments or make a separate recording, and verify that recording workflow independently in your encoder.

- The task runs, but the encoder does not appear: Check that the action points to the installed executable, then test the task under the intended account and trigger conditions. An encoder that needs a desktop session may suit an ONLOGON trigger better than ONSTART.
- The encoder starts but YouTube does not receive video: Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm that live streaming is enabled, and verify that YouTube Studio has the intended stream selected.
- The stream stops after a restart or internet interruption: Task Scheduler’s launch trigger does not prove that the encoder will reconnect or relaunch after that event. Test the interruption behavior and arrange separate monitoring or recovery if continuous service is essential.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in the encoder before streaming again.
- A long broadcast has no complete archive: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; plan segments or a separate recording when a complete copy matters.
